UVB-activated psoralen reduces luminal narrowing after balloon dilation because of inhibition of constrictive remodeling

In this study we have explored the potential of PUVB (8-MOP + UVB) therapy for the reduction of luminal narrowing after arterial injury. In 15 rabbits, balloon dilation of iliac arteries was performed. In 20 arteries, dilation was combined with the delivery of pulsed ultraviolet light B (UVB) irradiation with 10 arteries being previously subjected to sensitizer infusion. Changes in vessel diameter, proliferation and extracellular matrix protein content at 6 weeks were evaluated by means of angiography and histomorphometry-immunohistochemistry. We found that PUVB, applied at the time of dilation, induced reduction in late loss (LL) at 6 weeks (percutaneous transluminal angioplasty vs UVB vs PUVB: 0.64 +/- 0.15 mm vs 0.61 +/- 0.05 mm vs 0.29 +/- 0.05 mm; p = 0.018). The same holds true for constrictive remodeling (0.53 +/- 0.15 mm vs 0.45 +/- 0.06 mm vs 0.15 +/- 0.05 mm; p = 0.016). In the irradiation groups, LL was independent of acute gain (AG), as opposed to the control. Collagen content increased significantly after PUVB in media and adventitia, without increased cellular proliferation in all vessel layers. Thus, PUVB at the time of dilation reduced luminal narrowing at follow-up without effecting proliferation. This effect was independent of AG and was associated with increased collagen content in media and adventitia.

Observation of a Sharp Transition in Contact Angle in the Wetting of Graphite by Solid Pb-Ni Alloys

The wetting of Pb-Ni crystals on graphite has been observed at 558 K in a Scanning Auger Microprobe. Samples were prepared so as to produce 10 m crystals of Pb with Ni contents increasing from 0 to 0.3 wt% along one axis of the graphite substrate. In the low Ni region, the contact angle was found to decrease slowly from 119° to 98° with increasing Ni content. In the region of high Ni content, a constant contact angle of 83° was measured. In between, crystals with contact angles of 98° and 83° were observed to coexist, near the limit of solubility of Ni in Pb, indicating the presence of a first order transition in contact angle. The continuous decrease in contact angle, in the low Ni region, is due to Ni adsorption at the Pb-graphite interface, which leads to a decrease in interfacial energy. The constant contact angle in the high Ni region is associated with the precipitation of a Ni-rich phase. Various hypotheses are advanced to account for the first order transition in contact angle as a function of Ni concentration.

We are interested here in the characterization on a symbolic space, of invariant Gibbs measures as equilibrium measures. The first result in this topic was obtained by Lanford and Ruelle (see for example [6]).This problem involves different objects that can all be defined by using the only amenability of the translation group and the only continuity of the local specification. We therefore tried to state our theorems in this general frame. Among the elements of our proof, there is the use of the information gain introduced by H. Föllmer [1] and some arguments similar to those of C.J. Preston in [5]. But the amenability techniques that we widely develop in [2], [4] and [7] are decisive tools for getting the result.The corresponding problem for subshifts is not considered in the present paper so symbolic spaces are product spaces.
