Acid-Catalyzed E-Ring Expansion and Isomerization of 3-Acetylbetulin: Synthesis of Cytotoxic Anhydrobetulin Saponins

22(17 → 28)abeo-Lupene derivatives 5a and 6a were obtained after the acid-catalyzed E-ring expansion of 3-acetylbetulin (1a). Glycosylation of these dehydrated triterpenoids using Schmidt's trichloroacetimidate sugar donors in the presence of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf) provided the new anhydrobetulin saponins 7b–7e in which the terminal olefin C-20(29) isomerizes to form a C-19 tetrasubstituted alkene. The preliminary cytotoxic evaluation revealed that saponins 7b–7d exhibited a moderate cytotoxic activity against A549, DLD-1, and WS1 human cell lines with IC₅₀ ranging from 22 to 49 μM.     

Alkali metal and ammonium cation–arene interactions with tetraphenylborate anion

Sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium, ammonium and tetramethylammonium tetraphenylborates were studied by both positive and negative ion electrospray mass spectrometry. An affinity order of Cs⁺ > Rb⁺ > K⁺ ～ Na⁺ was obtained. The results obtained were compared with both calculations and solid-state structures, where available. The previously reported high affinity of caesium for tetraphenylborate concluded from NMR experiments was confirmed for the gas phase. The affinity does not appear to result from steric effects and a cation–pi interaction seems likely. In the positive ion mode, a unique acetonitrile complex of NaBPh₄ was observed.     

MgSO4·11H2O and MgCrO4·11H2O based on time‐of‐flight neutron single‐crystal Laue data

Hexaaquamagnesium(II) sulfate pentahydrate, [Mg(H₂O)₆]SO₄·5H₂O, and hexaaquamagnesium(II) chromate(II) pentahydrate, [Mg(H₂O)₆][CrO₄]·5H₂O, are isomorphous, being composed of hexaaquamagnesium(II) octahedra, [Mg(H₂O)₆]²⁺, and sulfate (chromate) tetrahedral oxyanions, SO₄²⁻ (CrO₄²⁻), linked by hydrogen bonds. There are two symmetry‐inequivalent centrosymmetric octahedra: M1 at (0, 0, 0) donates hydrogen bonds directly to the tetrahedral oxyanion, T1, at (0.405, 0.320, 0.201), whereas the M2 octahedron at (0, 0, ) is linked to the oxyanion via five interstitial water molecules. Substitution of Cr^VI for S^VI leads to a substantial expansion of T1, since the Cr—O bond is approximately 12% longer than the S—O bond. This expansion is propagated through the hydrogen‐bonded framework to produce a 3.3% increase in unit‐cell volume; the greatest part of this chemically induced strain is manifested along the b* direction. The hydrogen bonds in the chromate compound mitigate ∼20% of the expected strain due to the larger oxyanion, becoming shorter (i.e. stronger) and more linear than in the sulfate analogue. The bifurcated hydrogen bond donated by one of the interstitial water molecules is significantly more symmetrical in the chromate analogue.     

An Improved Procedure for the Synthesis of Prostaglandin Analogues

Hydrozirconation-iodination of a terminal acetylene followed by lithium-iodide exchange and finally dilithio cyanocuprate mediated conjugate addition to an appropriate cyclopentenone is reported as an efficient method for the synthesis of prostaglandin analogues.     

A Short and Efficient Stereoselective Synthesis of the Potent 5-Lipoxygenase Inhibitor CMI-977

A short and efficient synthesis of the potent 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor CMI-977 is described using as the key step a stereoselective anomeric oxygen to carbon rearrangement of an alkynyl stannane tetrahydrofuranyl ether derivative mediated by boron trifluoride etherate.     

A small-angle X-ray scattering study of nanoparticle assembly in an aligned nematic liquid crystal

The assembly of colloidal particles in a nematic liquid crystal has been investigated using small-angle X-ray scattering. The structure and orientation of nanoparticle assemblies in bulk samples of aligned nematic liquid crystal have been determined. The method offers some advantages over optical microscopy, which is usually restricted to investigations of thin cells and micron-sized particles. The scattering from chains of particles has been calculated, and comparison with experimental results has shown that suspensions of 48 and 105 nm diameter silica nanoparticles formed highly ordered structures perpendicular to the liquid crystal director, consistent with quadrupolar defect-induced assembly.     

Base‐Stabilized Boryl and Cationic Haloborylene Complexes of Iron

The synthesis of base‐stabilized boryl and borylene complexes is reported. An N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC)‐stabilized iron–dihydroboryl complex was prepared by two different routes including methane liberation and salt elimination. A range of base‐stabilized iron–dichloroboryl complexes was prepared by addition of Lewis bases to boryl complexes. Base‐stabilized, cationic monochloroborylene complexes were synthesized from these boryl complexes by halide abstraction by using weakly coordinating anions.     

Recoil-proton polarization in high-energy deuteron photodisintegration with circularly polarized photons

We measured the angular dependence of the three recoil-proton polarization components in two-body photodisintegration of the deuteron at a photon energy of 2 GeV. These new data provide a benchmark for calculations based on quantum chromodynamics. Two of the five existing models have made predictions of polarization observables. Both explain the longitudinal polarization transfer satisfactorily. Transverse polarizations are not well described, but suggest isovector dominance.
