Antioxidant activity of phenolic compounds from extracts of Eucalyptus globulus and Melaleuca styphelioides and their protective role on D-glucose-induced hyperglycemic stress and oxalate stress in NRK-49Fcells

Phytochemicals serve as potential therapeutic agents for the prevention and treatment of diseases. In this study, we elucidate the renoprotective activity of compounds isolated from Eucalyptus globulus and Melaleuca styphelioides extracts in glucose- and oxalate-challenged NRK-49F cell model. The antioxidant potential of isolated compounds was evaluated based on their effect on antioxidant enzyme activities and lipid peroxidation levels. The results demonstrated that exposure of NRK-49F cells to glucose and oxalate stress augmented cell damage and attenuated antioxidant enzyme activities. The phytochemicals 2,2,8-trimethyl-6-formyl-chrom-3-ene-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, Cornusiin B and tellimagrandin I treatment restored antioxidant enzyme activity, significantly lowered lipid peroxidation levels and effectively protected cells from glucose and oxalate stress equivalent to the known antioxidant, N-acetyl cysteine. Pterocarinin A significantly reversed cellular damage owing to glucose stress. In conclusion, the compounds isolated from E. globulus and M. styphelioides showed potential cytoprotective and anti-oxidative property against glucose- and oxalate-induced oxidative stress in NRK-49F cells.     

Potentiometric sensor for the nanoscale monitoring of Ni2+ ion in environmental samples by the fabrication of coated pyrolytic graphite electrode based on a novel C–C-coupled compound

Novel ligand 5,5?-((3-nitrophenyl)methylene)bis(2,6-diaminopyrimidin-4(3H)-one) (L) was synthesised and characterised. Preliminary studies on L have showed that it has more affinity towards the Ni²⁺ ion. Thus, the L was used as the electroactive material in the fabrication of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC)-based membrane sensors such as coated graphite electrode (CGE) and coated pyrolytic graphite electrode (CPGE). Several polymeric membranes were fabricated by incorporating L as ionophore, NaTPB as anion excluders and BA, 1-CN, DBP, DOP and o-NPOE as solvent mediators and their effect on potentiometric response studied. Comparative electroanalytical studies performed on the CGE and CPGE depict that the CPGE with optimised membrane composition of L:PVC:o-NPOE:NaTPB in the ratio of 7:33:58:2 (w/w, mg) exhibited the best response in terms of wide working concentration range from 2.0 × 10^?8 to 1.0 × 10^?1 mol L^?1, (3.64 µg L^?1 –18.2 g L^?1) lower detection limit of 8.1 × 10^–9 mol L^?1 (1.47 µg L^?1) with Nernstian compliance of 29.4 ± 0.2 mV decade^?1 of activity of Ni²⁺ ion in the pH range of 3.5–9.0. The sensor can work satisfactorily in water–acetonitrile and water–methanol mixtures. It can tolerate 30% acetonitrile and 20% methanol content in the mixtures. The sensor showed fast response time of 8 s and could be used successfully for a period of 4 months. The sensor reflects its utility in the quantification of Ni²⁺ ion in real samples and has been successfully employed as an indicator electrode in the potentiometric titration of Ni²⁺ ion with EDTA.     

Elimination of Estrogenic Activity of Thermal Paper Using Laccase from Trichoderma sp NFCCI-2745

In thermal printing, bisphenol A (BPA) functions chemically as a developer and reacts with white or colorless dyes in the presence of heat, converting them to a dark color. BPA can transfer readily to skin in small amounts from these papers. Its damage to environment and organisms has caused an extensive concern. In the present study, thermal paper used at the local automated teller machine counters of India were analyzed for the presence of BPA, and the capability of the paper to produce estrogenicity were assessed using a yeast two-hybrid assay experimental system. The study also focused on eliminating the endocrine-disrupting properties with partially purified laccase from newly isolated ascomycete fungi. The results indicate that these papers can produce estrogen hormone-like effect on experimental systems. It should be noted that on a daily basis, tons of such receipts are being dumped in the environment. Estrogenic properties of thermal paper were effectively removed from the reaction mixture within 3 h of incubation with the partially purified enzyme. We propose the utilization of waste thermal paper as a cheap substrate for laccase production for a safer and cleaner environment.     

Initial boundary value problem for a nonconservative system in elastodynamics

This article is concerned with the initial boundary value problem for a nonconservative system of hyperbolic equation appearing in elastodynamics in the space time domain x > 0, t > 0. The number of boundary conditions, to be prescribed at the boundary x = 0, depends on the number of characteristics entering the domain. Because our system is nonlinear, the characteristic speeds depends on the unknown and the direction of the characteristics curves are known apriori. As it is well known, the boundary condition has to be understood in a generalised way. One of the standard way is using vanishing viscosity method. We use this method to construct solution for a particular class of initial and boundary data, namely the initial and boundary datas that lie on the level sets of one of the Riemann invariants.

A general approach to medium-sized ring ethers via hydrolytic and oxidative kinetic resolutions: stereoselective syntheses of (−)-cis-lauthisan and (+)-isolaurepan

A short and enantioselective approach to medium ring ethers and its application to the syntheses of (−)-cis-lauthisan and (+)-isolaurepan are described. The synthetic strategy features Jacobson's Hydrolytic Kinetic Resolution (HKR), oxidative resolution of secondary alcohol, and highly diastereoselective Et₃SiH/TMSOTf-promoted reductive cyclization of a hydroxy ketone to give exclusively the different medium-sized cis-disubstituted cyclic ethers.     

Optimality and duality in nondifferentiable multiobjective mathematical programming involving higher order (F,α,ρ,d)-type I functions

In this paper, a nondifferentiable multiobjective programming problem is considered where every component of objective and constraint functions contain a term involving the support function of a compact convex set. A new class of higher order (F,α,ρ,d)-type I function is introduced. Necessary optimality conditions and the duality theorems for Wolfe and unified higher order dual problems are established. Several known results can be deduced as special cases.     

Unreliable newsboy problem with a forecast update

In this paper, we derive an optimal ordering policy for an unreliable newsboy who can place two sequential orders before the start of a single selling season by using a demand forecast update. Supply yield is modeled using a uniform distribution considering both the minimum order guarantee and the maximum yield. Our results indicate that a firm should focus on increasing the minimum order guarantee from a first stage supplier to reduce its total supply chain cost.
