Asymmetric polymerase chain reaction improves streptavidin–biotin based purification of polymerase chain reaction products prior to matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometric analysis

Asymmetric polymerase chain reaction (PCR) simplifies the application of biotin–streptavidin based purification formats for PCR products in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometric analysis. The use of an excess of non-biotinylated primer improves the turnover of biotinylated primer. Thereby performance deficiencies caused by non-extended biotinylated primer are eliminated. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Selective RGD‐Mediated Adhesion of Osteoblasts at Surfaces of Implants

Osteoblasts: yes, platelets: no! Bone implants have to be integrated with the surrounding tissue to allow a smooth and stable connection. A new procedure is shown which is based on covalent linking of a highly selective RGD peptide to a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) material (see picture). Osteoblasts very effectively bind to the treated surface and are stimulated to proliferate.     

Selective Alkene Oxidation with H2O2 and a Heterogenized Mn Catalyst: Epoxidation and a New Entry to Vicinal cis-Diols

Covalent anchoring of 1,4-dimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane on silica gel is the first step in the preparation of a heterogenized Mn catalyst. When H₂O₂ is used as the oxidant, this material can catalyze the vicinal cis-dihydroxylation of disubstituted olefins, as shown schematically here. Both enantiomers of the product are obtained.     

Memory of Chirality in Electron Transfer Mediated Benzylic Umpolung Reactions of Arene–Cr(CO)3 Complexes

As density functional calculations suggest , Cr(CO)₃-complexed benzylic radicals (such as 2 ) exhibit a significant degree of configurational stablility. This was exploited in an efficient method for the electron transfer mediated transformations of readily available 1-arylalkanol–Cr(CO)₃ derivatives 1 to afford alkylated products 3 in good yields and with a high degree of stereochemical retention.     

A nitrate-selective microelectrode based on a lipophilic derivative of iodocobalt(III)salen

The synthesis of iodo{2,2′-[1,2-octadecanediylbis(nitrilomethylidyne)]diphenolato}cobalt is described. Liquid membrane microelectrodes based on this carrier exhibit Nernstian behaviour with a selectivity sequence according to the Hofmeister series: I^– > NO₃ ^– > NO₂ ^– > Cl^– > HCO₃ ^– > AcO^–. The selectivity coefficient of nitrate over nitrite and chloride amounts to –1.6 and –2.7, respectively. The detection limit for nitrate in water amounts to 10^–5.2 mol/L. A nitrate profile measured in a nitrifying biofilm is presented as a practical application. Received: 11 November 1998 / Revised: 22 January 1999 / Accepted: 27 January 1999
