Oxidation of cysteine, glutathione and ascorbate by photoexcited proteins from normal and cataractous lenses was investigated using electron paramagnetic resonance in combination with spin trapping. We report that illumination of these proteins in pH 7 buffer with light > 300 nm in the presence of thiols (RSH) and a spin trap 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO), afforded DMPO/S-cysteine and DMPO/SG adducts, suggesting the formation of the corresponding thiyl radicals. In a nonbuffered aqueous solution, illumination of the proteins and glutathione also produced superoxide detected as a DMPO/O2H adduct. Irradiation of these proteins in the presence of ascorbate generated ascorbate radical. We conclude that chromophores present in the natural normal and cataractous lenses are capable of initiating photooxidative processes involving endogenous thiols and ascorbic acid. This observation may be pertinent to UV-induced development of cataract.  相似文献

The effects of six-channel compression and expansion amplification on the intelligibility of nonsense syllables embedded in speech spectrum noise were examined for four hearing-impaired subjects. For one condition (linear) the stimulus was given six-channel amplification with frequency shaping to suit the subject's hearing loss. The other condition (nonlinear) was the same except that low level inputs, to any given channel, received expansion amplification and high level inputs received compression. For each condition, each subject received the nonsense syllables at three different input levels, representing low, average, and high intensity speech. The results of this study, like those of most other studies of multichannel compression, are mainly negative. Nonlinear processing (mainly expansion) of low intensity speech resulted in a significant degradation of speech intelligibility for two subjects and in no improvement for the others. One subject showed a significant improvement in intelligibility for the nonlinearly processed average intensity speech and another subject showed significant improvement for the high intensity input (mainly compression). Clearly, nonlinear processing is beneficial for some subjects, under some listening conditions, but further research is needed to identify the relevent characteristics of such subjects. An acoustic analysis of selected items revealed that the failure of expansion to improve intelligibility was primarily due to the very low intensity consonants /e/ and /k/, in final position, being presented at an even lower intensity in the expansion condition than in the linear condition. Expansion may be worth further investigation with different parameters. Several other problems caused by the multichannel processing were also revealed. These included alteration of spectral shapes and band interaction effects. Ways of overcoming these problems, and of capitalizing on the likely advantages of multichannel amplification, are currently being investigated.  相似文献

Measurements of the galvanomagnetic properties of highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite have been made in the field range 0.001–1.5 T at 298, 77.4 and 4.2 K, with selected measurements to higher fields and ~1.2K. Specimens of graphite were chosen with properties approximating those of purified natural crystals (single crystals) of graphite. Attention is drawn to differences in the properties of these materials. The data are analyzed with particular emphasis on the density of free carriers and its dependence on temperature, since earlier work had shown that experimental results were appreciably different from theoretical predictions.  相似文献

The occlusion effect is commonly described as an unnatural and mostly annoying quality of the voice of a person wearing hearing aids or hearing protectors. As a result, it is often reported by hearing aid users as a deterrent to wearing hearing aids. This paper presents an investigation into active occlusion cancellation. Measured transducer responses combined with models of an active feedback scheme are first examined in order to predict the effectiveness of occlusion reduction. The simulations predict 18 dB of occlusion reduction in completely blocked ear canals. Simulations incorporating a 1 mm vent (providing passive occlusion reduction) predict a combined active and passive occlusion reduction of 20 dB. A prototype occlusion canceling system was constructed. Averaged across 12 listeners with normal hearing, it provided 15 dB of occlusion reduction. Ten of the subjects reported a more natural own voice quality and an appreciable increase in comfort with the cancellation active, and 11 out of the 12 preferred the active system over the passive system.  相似文献

We derive production yields for massive pseudo-scalar and scalar axion-like-particles (ALPs), through non-linear Compton scattering of an electron in the background of low- and high-intensity electromagnetic fields. In particular, we focus on electromagnetic fields from Gaussian plane wave laser pulses. A detailed study of the angular distributions and effects of the scalar and pseudo-scalar masses is presented. It is shown that ultra-relativistic seed electrons can be used to produce scalars and pseudo-scalars with masses up to the order of the electron mass. We briefly discuss future applications of this work towards lab-based searches for light beyond-the-Standard-Model particles.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to determine whether presurgical metabolite levels measured by 3D MR Spectroscopic Imaging (MRSI) can accurately detect viable cancer within human brain tumor masses. A total of 31 patients (33 exams, 39 pathology correlations) with brain tumors were studied prior to surgical biopsy and/or resection. The 3D MRSI was obtained with a spatial resolution of 0.2 to 1 cc throughout the majority of the mass and adjacent brain tissue using PRESS-CSI localization. Levels of choline, creatine and NAA were estimated from the locations of the resected tissue and normalized to normal appearing brain tissue. The data were correlated with subsequent histologic analysis of the biopsy tissue samples. Although there were large variations in the metabolite ratios, all regions of confirmed cancer demonstrated significant choline levels and a mean choline/NAA ratio of 5.84 + 2.58 with the lowest value being 1.3. This lowest value is greater than 4 standard deviations above the mean (0.52 +/- 0.13) found in 8 normal volunteers. The choline signal intensities in confirmed cancers were significantly elevated compared to normal appearing brain tissue with a mean ratio of 1.71 +/- 0.69. Spectra with no significant metabolite levels were observed in the non-enhancing necrotic core of the tumor masses. The results of this study indicate that 3D MRSI of brain tumors can detect abnormal metabolite levels in regions of viable cancer and grades and can differentiate cancer from necrosis and/or normal brain tissue.  相似文献

Dillon and Dobbertin proved that if L := GF(2 m ), gcd(k, m) = 1, d := 4 k ? 2 k + 1 and Δ k (x) := (x + 1) d + x d + 1, then B k := L k (L) is a difference set in the cyclic multiplicative group L  ×  of L. Used in the proof were the auxiliary functions $c_k^{\gamma}(x) := b_k(\gamma x^{2^k+1})$ , where γ is in L  ×  and b k is the characteristic function of B k on L. When m is odd $c_k^{\gamma}$ is itself the characteristic function of a cyclic difference set which is equivalent to B k . In this paper we point out that when m is even and γ is not a cube in L then $c_k^{\gamma}$ is the characteristic function of a difference set in the elementary abelian additive group of L; i.e. $c_k^{\gamma}$ is a bent function.  相似文献

Variation in the position of CF3 groups in several aromatic Group‐14 compounds was studied by 19F‐NMR spectroscopy. In these compounds RnECl4?n (n=1 or 2; E=Si, Ge, or Sn; R=2,4,6‐(CF3)3C6H2 (=Ar), 2,6‐(CF3)2C6H3 (=Ar′), or 2,4‐(CF3)2C6H3 (=Ar″)), Ar, Ar′, and Ar″ are all bulky, strongly electron‐withdrawing ligands. The 19F‐NMR studies of the variation in position of the CF3 substituents in these compounds as revealed by chemical shifts could be correlated with the electronegativities of the central elements E, and with intramolecular E–F interactions derived from single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction data. These interactions are considered to play an important role in the stabilization of these compounds.  相似文献
