Efficient synthesis of [3H]-sanglifehrin A via selective oxidation/reduction of alcohols at C31 and C35

[Reaction: see text]. Sanglifehrin A is a novel complex natural product showing strong immunosuppressive activity and remarkably high affinity for cyclophilin A. To assess its pharmacokinetic properties in vivo, an efficient synthetic route was developed to introduce a tritium label in position C35 of sangliferin A via an oxidation/reduction strategy. The synthetic approach is particularly attractive, because the C35-oxo intermediate 7 is available in good yield on large scale and the reducing agent, lithium tri-sec-butylborotritide, is readily available. An attempt to apply a similar strategy to the alcohol in position C31 led primarily to C31-epi-hydroxy sanglifehrin A under a variety of conditions.     

Pion multiplicity in nuclear collisions

Data on the mean multiplicity of ^- produced in minimum bias proton-proton, proton-neutron and proton-nucleus interactions as well as central nucleus-nucleus collisions at momenta of 1.4–400 GeV/c per nucleon have been compiled and studied. The results for neutron-neutron and nucleon-nucleon interactions were then constructed. The dependence of the mean pion multiplicity in proton-nucleus interactions and central collisions of identical nuclei are studied as a function of the collision energy and the nucleus mass number. The number of produced pions per participant nucleon in central collisions of identical nuclei is found to be independent of the number of participants at a fixed incident momentum per nucleon. The mean multiplicity of negatively charged hadrons per participant nucleon for central nucleus-nucleus collisions is lower by about 0.12 than the corresponding multiplicity for nucleon-nucleon interactions atp _LAB 15 A·GeV/c, whereas the result at 200 A·GeV/c is above the corresponding nucleon-nucleon multiplicity. This may indicate change of the collision dynamics at high energy.     

Spectral properties of diode-pumped non-planar monolithic Nd:YAG ring lasers

The coherence length of a single-frequency monolithic Nd:YAG ring laser is determined by using a highly unbalanced all-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer. A coherence length larger than 1500km and a 3 dB linewidth less than 60 Hz is estimated.Furthermore, an easy method to measure the temperature dependence on several laser parameters is described. This method is based on the laser emission in multiple axial modes, which is enforced by coherent optical feedback. A model explaining the multimode behaviour is presented.     

The μSR facilities at PSI

TheSR Facility Instruments presently available at PSI and the envisaged medium- and long-term developments are presented. The plans focus on further upgrades of the existing instruments and the development of new techniques using the very high fluxes becoming available at PSI, in particular the setup of a beamline with a fast kicker for muons on request (MORE) and the development of very low energy muon beams.     

Codes Based on Complete Graphs

We consider the problem of embedding the even graphical code based on the complete graph onn vertices into a shortening of a Hamming code of length 2^m-1, wherem = h(n) should be as small as possible. As it turns out, this problem is equivalent to the existence problem for optimal codes with minimum distance 5, and optimal embeddings can always be realized as graphical codes based onK _n. As a consequence, we are able to determineh(n) exactly for alln of the form 2 ^k + 1 and to narrow down the possibilities in general to two or three conceivable values.Dedicated to Hanfried Lenz on the occasion of his 80th birthdayThe research for this note was done while the first author was visiting the University of Waterloo and the University of Rome, respectively. A boundedness theorem with application to oscillation of autocatalytic chemical reactions

For a class of dynamical systems of the form , we prove boundedness of all solutions in the positive time direction. We discuss the existence of stable limit cycles for the simplest autocatalytic reaction involving two internal and two external reactants, as well as for a number of other models arising in applications.
