Exchange of deuterium with OH groups of HY zeolites

The exchange reaction of D₂ with OH groups of HY zeolites was followed both in the solid and gas phase by IR and MS. The rates of D₂–OH and D₂–H₂ exchange increase considerably with dehydroxylation of the sample. The active centers are probably vacancies formed by removal of oxygen from the lattice, they catalyze the dissociation of D₂. Dehydroxylation of the sample is accompanied by the formation of 3 740 cm^–1 hydroxyls, whose exchange with D₂ is slower than that with other OH groups and which affect the kinetics in the gas phase.

Role of rhenium in bimetallic reforming catalysts

The influence of rhenium on the behavior of a Pt/Al₂O₃ catalyst was studied in n-hexane reaction by means of dilution of the catalyst bed with Re/Al₂O₃. Parallel to activity, selectivity and ageing data obtained in slug pulse and continuous flow reactors, the amount of the surface carbon formed during the reaction was determined and its reactivity in hydrogen atmosphere was also studied. It is suggested that in the presence of rhenium due to the increase in the amount of hydrogen available for hydrogen consuming reactions including hydrodepolymerization of the carbonaceous surface overlayer, the routes of ageing processes are changed, resulting in lower carbon content on the catalyst and less pronounced catalyst deactivation.

Chemical ionization mass spectrometry of nitrosamines

The mass spectra of eight nitrosamines have been recorded, with excitation by chemical ionization (CI) and electron impact (EI). Comparison of the intensities of the base peaks under CI and El conditions gives intensity ratios in the range 1.4-1.9 for low resolution measurements and up to 10 for high resolution measurements, confirming the enhanced sensitivity available in the CI mode.     

The effect of organic nitriles on the radiation induced polymerization of styrene

The effect of a range of 10 organic nitriles on the radiation-induced polymerization of styrene was studied. A dose rate of 4.4 rad s^?1 was used. A rate of polymerization of styrene (1.744 mol L^?1 of toluene solution) of 5.0 × 10^?7 mol L^?1 s^?1 was found. With organic nitriles present (styrene:nitrile ratio of 1:0.28) the rate of polymerization increased. Rates in the range of 5.5 × 10^?7 ?5.2 × 10^?6 mol L^?1 s^?1, depending on the nitrile present, were obtained. The polymers were partially characterized and evidence of involvement of each of the nitriles in the polymer chains was revealed. The increase in rate of polymerization has been attributed to the part played by nitrile radicals in the initiation of styrene polymerization. Radical yield values [as G(nitrile radical)] were derived from the relevant rate expressions. Values ranged from 2.7 to 49.5, depending on the particular nitrile. Corresponding values of G(nitrile radical) in the range of 5.1–129.4 were obtained by the manipulation of number-average molar mass data. Values of k_pk_t of approximately 2 × 10^?5 L mol^?1 s^?1 were found. Trommsdorff types of effect are absent from these systems.     

Thermal degradation of a highly chlorinated paraffin used as a fire retardant additive for polymers

The thermal degradation of a highly chlorinated paraffin, (Cl 70% w/w)(CP), used as a fire retardant additive for polymers, has been studied by TG, DTA and TVA. The main volatile degradation product is HCl which is eliminated in two steps. To 60–70% dehydrochlorination an apparent zero order reaction occurs with a detectable rate from 250°C, probably initiated at labile chlorine atoms. The apparent activation energy of the process is 40 kcal/mole. A charred residue containing 35% chlorine is obtained. This residue undergoes nearly complete dehydrochlorination in the range 300–600°C.

Theoretical treatment of the spectrophotometric titration of bivalent cations with complexon-iii and metal-specific indicators

It was derived theoretically that a sharp end-point of this spectrophotometrical titration is defined, in order of importance, by: 1. *K_C ? *K_I (numerically speaking, log$\text{*K}{}_{\mathrm{C}}\text{*K}{}_{\mathrm{I}}$ should be at least 4); 2. *K_I being large (numerically e.g. 10⁴-10⁵); this is already reached by choosing a high pH; 3. it being low; 4. m_t being as high as possible.     

Nature of mechanically induced defects in polycrystalline hydrargillite and Al2O3-A1(OH)3 studied by radiation methods

Mechanical treatment of hydrargillite Al(OH)₃ in a vibrational grinder and in a ball-mill grinder increases the dispersion, the specific surface area, and the unit-cell constants. An x-ray amorphous phase forms. Differences in the nature and in the concentration of paramagnetic centers arise on irradiation (77 K) of the mechanically treated samples. Anion vacancies and oxygen ions with disrupted short-range order appear in the mechanically treated samples. Their concentration increases with increased time of mechanical treatment. Pulsed thermal treatment of hydrargillite forms the Al₂O₃-Al(OH)₃ system and anneals the mechanically induced defects.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Seriya Khimicheskaya, No. 7, pp. 1463–1467, July, 1990.     

Use of reference pools to compare the qualitative and quantitative determination of polychlorinated biphenyls by packed and capillary gas chromatography with electron capture detection. Part 1. Serum

Serum for reference pools of in vivo polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was obtained from four goats that had received one dose (100 mg kg-1) of a selected technical Aroclor (AR) (1016, 1242, 1254 or 1260) and were allowed to recover for 30 d. These pools were used to assess the differences in an analytical method that determines and quantifies PCBs using packed-column gas chromatography (PCGC) (quantified on the basis of mean mass percent. data for grouped PCB peaks) and capillary-column gas chromatography (CCGC) (quantified on the basis of percent. composition data for specific congeners). With CCGC, results were statistically significantly different (p less than or equal to 0.0002) from results with PCGC for ARs 1016, 1242 and 1254 but not for AR 1260 (p = 0.23). When comparing these gas chromatographic methods using bovine serum spiked in vitro with the same ARs at 17-25 p.p.b., it was found that the methods were not statistically significantly different for any of the ARs (p = 0.30-0.92). Levels of serum PCB determined by the two methods for 12 persons, divided into two groups according to exposure, were compared using the paired t-test. Group 1 consisted of three persons with dietary and/or environmental exposure; one with dietary and/or environmental exposure in addition to occupational exposure dating back 20 years.
