An analysis of aligned nematic liquid crystal cells containing core-shell nanospheres shows that it is possible to devise a new type of metamaterial whose index of refraction is tunable from negative, through zero, to positive values. The design parameters for the constituents can be scaled for application in the optical as well as very long wavelength (e.g., terahertz and microwave) regions.  相似文献

Metabolomics is a comprehensive method for metabolite assessment that involves measuring the overall metabolic signature of biological samples. We used this approach to investigate biochemical changes due to acute and chronic physical exercise. Twenty-two women using identical oral contraceptives were segregated into an untrained (n = 10) or trained (n = 12) group depending on their physical training background. The subjects performed two exercises in a randomized order: a prolonged exercise test (75% of their \mathop V· \textO2   max \mathop V\limits^\cdot {{\text{O}}_{2\,\;\max }} until exhaustion) and a short-term, intensive exercise test (short-term, intensive exercise anaerobic test). Urine specimens were collected before and 30 min after each test. The samples were analyzed by 1H NMR spectroscopy, and multivariate statistical techniques were utilized to process the data. Distinguishing characteristics were observed only in the urine profiles of specimens collected before vs. 30 min after the short-term, intensive exercise test. The metabolites responsible for such changes were creatinine, lactate, pyruvate, alanine, β-hydroxybutyrate, acetate, and hypoxanthine. In both groups, the excretion of lactate, pyruvate, alanine, β-hydroxybutyrate, and hypoxanthine increased similarly after the completion of the short-term, intensive exercise test (p < 0.03). However, acetate excretion increased to a lesser extent in trained than in untrained subjects (p < 0.05). In conclusion, metabolomics is a promising tool in order to gain insight into physiological status and to clarify the changes induced by short-term, intense physical exercise.  相似文献

This study is an attempt to ascertain if singers from different traditions and milieus follow similar aesthetic trends regardless of training and/or background. Cantors who sang the Jewish synagogue liturgy during the Golden Age of cantorial singing prior to World War II came from Eastern and Central Europe. For the most part, they were not trained in the classical Western opera tradition. They received training from choir leaders and other cantors and the training was primarily in the modes of synagogue chant. Cantors today receive the same kinds of training that opera singers receive, often from the same teachers. Four groups of singers, consisting of four singers in each group, were utilized in this study. The four groups are: historical opera singers, contemporary opera singers, historical cantors, and contemporary cantors. The historical opera singer recordings date from as early as 1909 to as late as 1939. It was not possible to determine the dates of the historical cantor recordings. However, the four cantors chosen for this group were active only to the 1940s. Contemporary samples were taken from CDs and/or live recordings and all the singers from the contemporary groups are either still active or were active in the 1960s through the 1980s and all of them are considered to be premier-level singers in their respective areas. The variables analyzed were: vibrato pulse rate, frequency variation of the vibrato pulse above and below the mean sustained sung frequency in percent, the mean amplitude variation of the amplitude vibrato pulse above and below the mean sustained amplitude in percent and the fast Fourier transform (FFT) power spectrum of the sustained samples. Results indicate that most of the significant differences were found between eras and not between groups within a time period.  相似文献

Principal component analysis (PCA)‐based neural network (NNet) models of HfO2 thin films are used to study the process of efficient model selection and develop an improved model by using multivariate functional data such as X‐ray diffraction data (XRD). The accumulation capacitance and the hysteresis index input parameters, both characteristic of HfO2 dielectric films, were selected for the inclusion in the model by analyzing the process conditions. Standardized XRD were used to analyze the characteristic variations for different process conditions; the responses and the electrical properties were predicted by NNet modeling using crystallinity‐based measurement data. A Bayesian information criterion (BIC) was used to compare the model efficiency and to select an improved model for response prediction. Two conclusions summarize the results of the research documented in this paper: (i) physical or material properties can be predicted by the PCA‐based NNet model using large‐dimension data, and (ii) BIC can be used for the selection and evaluation of predictive models in semiconductor manufacturing processes. Isothermal compressibilities T and isobaric thermal expansion coefficients p have been determined for mixtures of ethylbenzene+n-nonane, +n-decane, and +n-dodecane at 25 and 45°C in the whole range of composition. The excess functions and have been obtained at each measured mole fraction. The first one is zero for ethylbenzene +n-nonane, positive for ethylbenzene +n-decane, and +n-dodecane and increases with chain length n of the n-alkane. The function is positive for the three studied systems and nearly constant with n. Both mixing functions increase slightly with temperature. From this measurement and supplementary literature data of molar heat capacities at constant pressure C P , the isentropic compressibilities S, the molar heat capacities at constant volume C V and the corresponding mixing functions have been calculated at 25°C. Furthermore, the pressure dependence of excess enthalpy H B , at zero pressure and at 25°C has been obtained from our experimental results of and experimental literature values for excess volume V E .  相似文献

Summary New complexes of copper(I) with some heterocyclic pentatomic rings, X·CH2·CH2·NR·CSe, where X=CH2, NH, NMe, NEt, S and R=H, Me, Et, were prepared by reacting copper(II) chloride and bromide in MeOH. The stoichiometry of the complexes and the binding mode of the ligands have been discussed comparatively, together with those of the thione parents. It is noteworthy that the selone ligands with R=H (L) yield complexes of the type CuLnY, (n=1,2 or 3; Y=Cl or Br) like the corresponding thione ones. On the contrary, when R=Me or Et, the selonic ligands (L) give complexes whose stoichiometries, Cu2LY2 and Cu3L2Y3, differ from the thione homologues. The i.r. spectra of the complexes compared with those of the ligands support the coordinative bondvia selenium atom.  相似文献

The reaction of Ln(NO(3))(3).aq with K(3)[Fe(CN)(6)] or K(3)[Co(CN)(6)] and 2,2'-bipyridine in water led to five one-dimensional complexes: trans-[M(CN)(4)(mu-CN)(2)Ln(H(2)O)(4) (bpy)](n)().XnH(2)O.1.5nbpy (M = Fe(3+) or Co(3+); Ln = Sm(3+), Gd(3+), or Yb(3+); X = 4 or 5). The structures for [Fe(3)(+)-Sm(3+)] (1), [Fe(3)(+)-Gd(3+)] (2), [Fe(3)(+)-Yb(3+)] (3), [Co(3)(+)-Gd(3+)] (4), and [Co(3)(+)-Yb(3+)] (5) have been solved; they crystallize in the triclinic space P1 and are isomorphous. The [Fe(3+)-Sm(3+)] complex is a ferrimagnet, its magnetic studies suggesting the onset of weak ferromagnetic 3-D ordering at 3.5 K. The [Fe(3+)-Gd(3+)] interaction is weakly antiferromagnetic. The isotropic nature of Gd(3+) allowed us to evaluate the exchange interaction (J = 0.77 cm(-)(1)).  相似文献
