A π-acceptor series for phosphines from51V N.M.R. data on [η5-CpV(CO)3L] complexes

Summary Qualitative molecular orbital considerations of the complexes [⁵-CPV(CO)₃ L] (L = substituted phosphane, SbPh₃, AsPh₃, CN^–) suggest that s' V chemical shift parameters () obtained for these compounds should correlate with the -acceptor abilities of L. Based on observed r-values, the ligands are arranged in sequence of their -acceptor ability, which lies in the order P(OR)₃ > CN^– > PR'₃3 SbPh₃ PPhF₂ > P(i-Bu)₃ P(NR ₂ )₃ > PPh₃ > AsPh₃ Nuclear spin-spin coupling constants J (⁵¹V-³¹ P), line widths H and i.r. data in the (CO) region are also presented.P(OR)₃ = P(OEt)₃, 4-Ethyl-l-phospha-2,6,7-trioxabicyclo[2.2.2]-octane; R = Me, n-Pr; R = Me, Et.     

Supplier-customer interaction in quality control

We develop a game theoretic model of joint quality control in a single sourcing environment which integrates supplier and customer decisions. In this model, both parties behave strategically and take each other's incentives into account when deciding on their respective sampling plans. The specific sampling plans considered are of the single sample fraction defective with rectifying inspection type. A method to find the optimal sampling plans for both supplier and customer in two different informational setups is constructed. The resulting models lead to examination of Stackelberg and Nash equilibria. Numerical examples of such equilibria are presented, indicating how optimal strategies depend on the parameters of the problem.     

New Methods for the Synthesis of Glycosides and Oligosaccharides—Are There Alternatives to the Koenigs-Knorr Method? [New Synthetic Methods (56)]

Glycoproteins, glycolipids, and glycophospholipids (glycoconjugates) are components of membranes. The oligosaccharide residue is responsible for intercellular recognition and interaction; it acts as a receptor for proteins, hormones, and viruses and governs immune reactions. These significant activities have stimulated interest in oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates. With their help it should be possible to clarify the molecular basis of these phenomena and to derive new principles of physiological activity. Major advances in the synthesis of oligosaccharides have been made by the use of the Koenigs-Knorr method, in which glycosyl halides in the presence of heavy-metal salts are employed to transfer the glycosyl group to nucleophiles. The disadvantages of this procedure have led to an intensive search for new methods. Such methods will be discussed in this article. Emphasis is placed on glycoside and saccharide formation by 1-O-alkylation, on the trichloroacetimidate method, and on activation through the formation of glycosylsulfonium salts and glycosyl fluorides.     

Determination of arsenic species in water, soils and plants

Ion chromatographic separation coupled with ICP-MS was used to determine arsenic species in plant and soil extracts. A scheme for growth, harvesting, sample pre-treatment and analysis was developed for the arsenic species to enable determination. Preliminary results obtained with ten herb plants grown on arsenic-contaminated soil compared to non-contaminated soil show a heterogeneous pattern of accumulation rate, metabolization and detoxification mechanisms in monocots and dicots. Arsenite appears to be the major component in plants with good growth. Organic arsenic species were even detected at very low concentrations (< 150 microg kg(-1) (dry mass)).     

121Sb-Mössbauer-Spektren von Antimon(V)-Verbindungen. II

¹²¹Sb Mössbauer Spectra of Antimony (V) Compounds. II The Mössbauer resonance effect of ¹²¹Sb has been studied at 4.2 K in a series of 11 antimony(V) compounds which are in most cases bridged. Isomer shift and quadrupole splitting variations are considered in the light of results of X-ray and vibrational spectroscopy. Preparation and the vibrational spectra of [NMe₄][SbCl₄(n₃)₂] are described. Within the limitations of available structural data related tin compounds are compared with those of corresponding ¹¹⁹Sn Mössbauer spectra.     

Synthesis of C-Disaccharides An Unusual Ring Closure Reaction

Abstract

Reaction of the 4-C-lithiomethyl intermediates, obtained from 4-deoxy-4-C-iodomethylglucopyranosides 5a,b, with open-chain glucose derivative 8 afforded 4-deoxy-4-C-heptitylglucopyranosides 9a,b. Mesylation of the newly generated hydroxy group and then desilylation gave 11a,b which were subjected to ring closure under basic conditions. Surprisingly, no C-bridged cellobiosides 12a,b (or, alternatively the corresponding maltosides) were obtained as major products; with loss of one benzyl alcohol residue the furanosides 13a,b were preferentially formed. Their generation and structural assignment is discussed.
