IMPUTING MISSING NATURAL RESOURCE INVENTORY DATA AND THE BOOTSTRAP

Gathering information on natural resource inventories is expensive, but lack of data inhibits resource sector modeling and policy analysis. Most work has focused on drawing broader inventory estimates from small survey samples. Other studies have used simple forward forecasting equations to project missing values. This research develops a method to impute missing inventory and growth observations when annual survey observations are not available. A one-way error component model is estimated and missing inventory values are imputed using an optimally weighted combination of forward and backward projections. This method ensures conformity of imputed observations with beginning and ending inventories. Confidence intervals for imputed inventory estimates are formed using the bootstrap method. Empirical results for estimated softwood and hardwood inventories in Louisiana are presented.

Comments on the electronic structure of dimeric copper,as calculated with the hartree—fock—slater method

The first-principles numerical discrete variational method was employed to study the electronic structure of Cu₂, using the Xα approximation for the exchange interaction. One-electron eigenvalues and ionization potentials are given. Results are discussed in the framework of the approximations used, and compared with published ab initio results.     

The chiroptical properties of selenofenchone,a selenoketone with an asymmetrically perturbed CSe chromophore

CD, ORD, and UV spectra were obtained for the first time on a selenoketone; the chiroptical properties of the selenoketone and of its analogous thione and ketone were parallel.     

Free-radical version of the strecker synthesis of alpha-aminoamides promoted by aqueous H2O2/TiCl3/HCONH2 system

A new reaction of general synthetic interest representing the free-radical version of the Strecker synthesis to alpha-aminoamides is reported. A hydroxy radical, generated by Ti(III) one-electron reduction of H2O2, abstracts a H atom from the C-H bond of formamide, and the resulting carbamoyl radical adds to the C atom of aldimines formed in situ, leading to a one-pot synthesis of alpha-aminoamides. Several types of aldehydes can participate in this process.     

Indicator displacement assay using an in situ generated polymeric system in water: exploiting donor–acceptor interactions

Indicator displacement assays (IDAs) using an electron-rich polymer as the receptor for electron-deficient guests are described in this study. The electron-rich water-soluble polymeric system possesses hydrophobic pockets, which were generated by the reaction of 1 (a Michael donor) and 1,3,5-triacryloylhexahydro-1,3,5-triazine, 5 (TAT, a Michael acceptor), in water at pH 8.2 in 2 min at 85^oC. When electron-deficient fluorescent indicators are added to the polymeric systems, large changes in fluorescent intensity of the indicators occur. This donor–acceptor architecture between polymer and indicator was in turn explored for displacement of the indicator with electron-deficient analytes such as TNT.
