Optimizing in the class of Fuller modified limited information maximum likelihood estimators

A general class of Fuller modified maximum likelihood estimators are considered. It is shown that this class possesses finite moments. Asymptotic bias and asymptotic mean squared error are derived using small-σ expansions. A simulation study is carried out to compare different estimators in this class with standard estimators.     

Feedback stabilization of snap-through buckling in a preloaded two-bar linkage with hysteresis

We study a linearly damped preloaded two-bar linkage that exhibits hysteresis due to the presence of multiple attracting equilibria. The dynamics at the unstable equilibrium, through which a snap-through buckle occurs, are not linearizable due to a solution-dependent singularity. We stabilize the unstable equilibrium using two distinct non-linear controllers. The feedback-linearization controller requires knowledge of the linkage parameters, whereas the robust version of the intrinsic non-linear proportional-derivative controller requires only an upper bound on the stiffness.     

Cetyltrimethylammonium hydroxide (CTAOH) as a general, ecofriendly catalyst for the formation of carbon-carbon bond through nitroalkanes

Nitroalkanes have been found to give good yields in Michael and nitroaldol (Henry) reactions by the use of a catalytic amount (10 mol%) of CTAOH, at room temperature and under solvent free conditions and in very short reaction times. The methods do not need a large excess of the nitroalkanes and show good chemoselectivity toward further functionalities.     

2,4,6‐Trifluoropyrimidine. Reactions with nitrogen nucleophiles

In a continuation of our studies involving the nucleophilic displacement of one of the chlorines from 2,4,6‐trichloropyrimidine, we now report the initial displacement of one of the fluorine atoms from 2,4,6‐trifluoropyrimidine using both aliphatic and aromatic amines. The monosubstitution products favor 2‐substitution with ammonia and ethanolamine while aniline gave the 4‐substituted derivative as the preferred product.     

Inhibitors of biotin biosynthesis as potential herbicides

Isosteric derivatives and analogues of the 7-keto-8-aminopelargonic acid (KAPA), 7,8-diaminopelargonic acid (DAPA) and desthiobiotin (DTB) vitamer intermediates involved in the biosynthetic pathway of biotin were prepared and evaluated as potential herbicides. The most active compound was desmethyl-KAPA which displayed a GR₅₀ (concentration of the active compound that causes a 50% growth inhibition) value of 8 ppm, where values <50 ppm are considered herbicidal. Other KAPA analogs where the terminal Me group was replaced by bulkier substituents such as Et, i-Pr and HOCH₂ showed moderate activity.     

Synthesis and polymerization of a new nitrogen‐containing bis‐ortho‐diynylarene monomer

This study focuses on the preparation, characterization, and optical properties of new bis(3,4‐diphenylethynylphenyl)phenylamine. This is the first nitrogen‐containing bis‐ortho‐diynylarene (BODA) monomer having a nitrogen atom as the spacer group. BODA monomers are usually prepared from common bisphenols, thereby providing great synthetic versatility and the opportunity to develop a wide array of novel polyarylene thermosets by varying the aromatic spacer group. The new bis(3,4‐bisphenylethynylphenyl)phenylamine was synthesized in five steps. This compound emits an intense blue color (λ = 438 nm) upon irradiation by UV light and may be suitable for use as an emitting layer in electroluminescent devices. Bis‐(3,4‐bisphenylethynylphenyl)phenylamine and its polymer have photoluminescence quantum yields 34 and 38%, respectively, and long excited‐state lifetimes of 3.2 and 3.6 ns, respectively. The structure of the monomer and its polymer were characterized using spectroscopic techniques including Ultraviolet–visible Spectrophotometer, Photoluminescence Spectrophotometer, Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, and Gel Permeation Chromatography. The polymerizations were studied by Differential Scanning Calorimeter. The amount of weight loss and the thermostability of the nitrogen‐containing polymer were determined from thermogravimetric analysis. The electrical conductivity of neat HCl‐doped BODA‐derived polymer film was measured according to the standard four‐point probe technique. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Electrical characteristics of a small active volume (1 cm3) discharge-pumped XeCl laser

Through the use of a PFL (pulse-forming line) of conveniently changeable output impedance Z_O, the electrical characteristics of a small volume-discharge of standard XeCl laser gas mix was studied. The impedance Z_D from a 2×0.5×1(=1) cm³ discharge was found to be about 10. A PFL of very low impedance is therefore rather inefficient in driving the discharge, because of the impedance mismatch and the slower current rise time. The data presented will be useful for the design of excimer lasers of small discharge volume, which find applications in serving as master oscillator or in high repetition rate operation.
