Perception of electrical stimuli varies widely across users of cochlear implants and across stimulation sites in individual users. It is commonly assumed that the ability of subjects to detect and discriminate electrical signals is dependent, in part, on conditions in the implanted cochlea, but evidence supporting that hypothesis is sparse. The objective of this study was to define specific relationships between the survival of tissues near the implanted electrodes and the functional responses to electrical stimulation of those electrodes. Psychophysical and neurophysiological procedures were used to assess stimulus detection as a function of pulse rate under the various degrees of cochlear pathology. Cochlear morphology, assessed post-mortem, ranged from near-normal numbers of hair cells, peripheral processes and spiral ganglion cells, to complete absence of hair cells and peripheral processes and small numbers of surviving spiral ganglion cells. The psychophysical and neurophysiological studies indicated that slopes and levels of the threshold versus pulse rate functions reflected multipulse integration throughout the 200 ms pulse train with an additional contribution of interactions between adjacent pulses at high pulse rates. The amount of multipulse integration was correlated with the health of the implanted cochlea with implications for perception of more complex prosthetic stimuli.  相似文献

We present integral equation methods for the solution to the two-dimensional, modified Helmholtz equation, u(x) ? α2Δu(x) = 0, in bounded or unbounded multiply-connected domains. We consider both Dirichlet and Neumann problems. We derive well-conditioned Fredholm integral equations of the second kind, which are discretized using high-order, hybrid Gauss-trapezoid rules. Our fast multipole-based iterative solution procedure requires only O(N) operations, where N is the number of nodes in the discretization of the boundary. We demonstrate the performance of our methods on several numerical examples, and we show that they have both the ability to handle highly complex geometry and the potential to solve large-scale problems.  相似文献

The energies of combustion and fusion of 5-cyano-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptene (1) and (5E,11E)-dibenzo[a,e]cyclooctene-5,11-dicarbonitrile (2) were measured by means of microbomb calorimetry and DSC, respectively. The derived enthalpies of formation in solid state are 320 ± 18 for nitrile 1 and 470 ± 31 kJ mol−1 for nitrile 2, respectively. The experimental enthalpies of formation are discussed in relationship with values calculated at the G3(MP2)//B3LYP level of quantum chemical theory, by means of group additivity and isodesmic reactions. The two nitriles are not stabilized by dibenzoannelation.  相似文献

The protein resistance of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) brushes grafted from silicon wafers was investigated as a function of the chain molecular weight, grafting density, and temperature. Above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of 32 °C, the collapse of the water-swollen chains, determined by ellipsometry, depends on the grafting density and molecular weight. Ellipsometry, radio assay, and fluorescence imaging demonstrated that, below the lower critical solution temperature, the brushes repel protein as effectively as oligoethylene oxide-terminated monolayers. Above 32 °C, very low levels of protein adsorb on densely grafted brushes, and the amounts of adsorbed protein increase with decreasing brush-grafting-densities. Brushes that do not exhibit a collapse transition also bind protein, even though the chains remain extended above the LCST. These findings suggest possible mechanisms underlying protein interactions with end-grafted poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) brushes.  相似文献

Given a smooth complex threefold X, we define the virtual motive $[\operatorname{Hilb}^{n}(X)]_{\operatorname {vir}}$ of the Hilbert scheme of n points on X. In the case when X is Calabi–Yau, $[\operatorname{Hilb}^{n}(X)]_{\operatorname{vir}}$ gives a motivic refinement of the n-point degree zero Donaldson–Thomas invariant of X. The key example is X=?3, where the Hilbert scheme can be expressed as the critical locus of a regular function on a smooth variety, and its virtual motive is defined in terms of the Denef–Loeser motivic nearby fiber. A crucial technical result asserts that if a function is equivariant with respect to a suitable torus action, its motivic nearby fiber is simply given by the motivic class of a general fiber. This allows us to compute the generating function of the virtual motives $[\operatorname{Hilb}^{n} (\mathbb{C}^{3})]_{\operatorname{vir}}$ via a direct computation involving the motivic class of the commuting variety. We then give a formula for the generating function for arbitrary X as a motivic exponential, generalizing known results in lower dimensions. The weight polynomial specialization leads to a product formula in terms of deformed MacMahon functions, analogous to Göttsche’s formula for the Poincaré polynomials of the Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces.  相似文献

The problem of students entering university lacking basic mathematical skills is a critical issue in the Australian higher-education sector and relevant globally. The Maths Skills programme at La Trobe University has been developed to address under preparation in the first-year science cohort in the absence of an institutional mathematics support centre. The programme was delivered through first-year science and statistics subjects with large enrolments and focused on basic mathematical skills relevant to each science discipline. The programme offered a new approach to the traditional mathematical support centre or class. It was designed through close collaboration between science subject coordinators and the project leader, a mathematician, and includes resources relevant to science and mathematics questions written in context. Evaluation of the programme showed it improved the confidence of the participating students who found it helpful and relevant. The programme was delivered through three learning modes to allow students to select activities most suitable for them, which was appreciated by students. Mathematics skills appeared to increase following completion of the programme and student participation in the programme correlated positively and highly with academic grades in their relevant science subjects. This programme offers an alternative model for mathematics support tailored to science disciplines.  相似文献

We report the development of a novel laser spectrometer for high-sensitivity detection of methane and nitrous oxide. The system relies on a quantum-cascade laser source emitting wavelength of around 8.06 μm, where strong fundamental absorption bands occur for the considered species and their isotopomers. The detection technique is based on audio-frequency and radio-frequency modulation of laser radiation. First experimental tests have been performed to estimate the achievable detection limits and the signal reproducibility levels in view of possible measurements of 13C/12C, 18O/16O, 17O/16O and 15N/14N isotope ratios.  相似文献

Energy losses in solar cells caused by the spectral mismatch can be reduced by adapting the solar spectrum using a downconversion material where one higher energy visible photon is ‘cut' into two lower energy near-infrared photons that both can be absorbed by the solar cell. Downconversion with the (Pr3+, Yb3+) couple in YF3 is investigated. Based on analysis of luminescence and diffuse reflectance spectra it is evident that two-step energy transfer takes place from the 3P0 level of Pr3+ (around 490 nm) exciting two Yb3+ to the 2F5/2 level giving emission around 980 nm. The transfer efficiency increases with Yb3+ concentration and is 86% for YF3 doped with 0.5% Pr3+ and 30% Yb3+. Due to concentration quenching the intensity of emission from Yb3+ is strongly reduced and the 2F5/2 emission intensity reaches a maximum for the sample with 0.5% Pr3+ and 2–5% Yb3+ at 300 K. Temperature dependent measurements reveal the role of the Pr3+ 1G4 level in the energy transfer between Pr3+ and Yb3+. Back-transfer of excitation energy from the Yb3+ 2F5/2 level to the 1G4 level of Pr3+ occurs and quenches the Yb3+ emission. The quenching is shown to become more efficient between 4 and 50 K due to faster phonon-assisted energy transfer between the Yb3+ donors. Upon raising the temperature from 50 to 300 K, the luminescence life time of the Yb3+ emission increases again because the small energy difference between the Pr3+ (1G4) level and the Yb3+ (2F5/2) level (~300 cm?1) which makes the 1G4 less efficient as a trap for the excitation energy. The present results give insight into factors involved in the concentration quenching in downconversion materials based on the (Pr3+, Yb3+) couple.  相似文献

The distance d(i,j)d(i,j) between any two vertices ii and jj in a graph is the number of edges in a shortest path between ii and jj. If there is no path connecting ii and jj, then d(i,j)=∞d(i,j)=. In 2001, Latora and Marchiori introduced the measure of efficiency between vertices in a graph (Latora and Marchiori, 2001) [1]. The efficiency between two vertices ii and jj is defined to be i,j=ji,j=j. In this paper, we investigate the efficiency of star-like networks, and show that networks of this type have a high level of efficiency. We apply these ideas to an analysis of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) Subway system, and show this network is 82% as efficient as a network where there is a direct line between every pair of stations.  相似文献
