Antimicrobial investigation of Linum usitatissimum for the treatment of acne

Light petroleum, dichloromethane and methanolic extracts of Linum usitatissimum were investigated using GC/MS. The main components of three sequential extracts were methyl linolenate (11.9-33.9%) and methyl linoleate (3.4-9.1%). Components possessing antimicrobial activity against acne causing bacteria, namely alpha-linolenic acid (7.0 -7.1%), alpha-terpinene (1.7-3.1%), terpinen-4-ol (1.3-4.6%), 4-cymene (1.6-7.1%) and alpha-pinene (1.1%), were found in varying amounts. Antimicrobial screening indicated that the light petroleum extract was more active against aerobic and anaerobic test strains with a MIC value of 1.25 mg/mL and a MBC of 2.5 mg/mL against S. aureus and P. acnes. A MIC of 2.5 mg/mL was observed against S. epidermidis.

An Efficient, One-Pot, Triton-B Catalyzed Synthesis of O -Alkyl- S -methyl Dithiocarbonates

A novel process for the one-step conversion of a variety of primary and secondary alcohols into their O-alkyl-S-methyl dithiocarbonates using methyl iodide catalyzed by the Triton-B/CS₂ system was developed. Thus, O-alkyl-S-methyl dithiocarbonates were obtained in very good to excellent yields. This protocol is mild and efficient compared to other methods.     

Focusing of electromagnetic waves into a uniaxial crystal

We derive integral representations suitable for studying the focusing of electromagnetic waves through a plane interface into a uniaxial crystal. To that end we start from existing exact solutions for the transmitted fields due to an arbitrary three-dimensional (3D) wave that is incident upon a plane interface separating two uniaxial crystals with arbitrary orientation of the optical axis in each medium. Then we specialize to the case in which the medium of the incident wave is isotropic and derive explicit expressions for the dyadic Green's functions associated with the transmitted fields as well as integral representations suitable for asymptotic analysis and efficient numerical evaluation. Relevant integral representations for focused 3D electromagnetic waves are also given. Next we consider the special case in which (i) the incident field is a two-dimensional (2D) TM wave and (ii) the optical axis in the crystal lies in the plane of incidence, implying that we have a 2D vectorial problem, and derive dyadic Green's functions, integral representations suitable for asymptotic and numerical treatment, and integral representations for focused TM fields. Numerical results for focused 2D TM fields based on these integral representations as well as corresponding experimental results will be presented in forthcoming papers.

Studies on binuclear Schiff base derivatives having a Si?O?Sb (V) linkage

Schiff base derivatives of the type Ph₃Si? O? Sb(NO)Ph₃ (where NO represents the donor system of a monobasic bidentate ligand) have been synthesized. These are obtained as coloured solids; they are non-electrolytes and monomeric in nature, and have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR and ¹H NMR. Spectral studies suggest that silicon and antimony atoms are in tetra- and hexa-coordinated states, respectively.     

Triton-B Catalyzed Efficient One-Pot Synthesis of Dithiocarbamate Esters

A novel process for the one-step chemoselective conversion of alkyl halides into dithiocarbamates as protected amines was developed using benzyltrimethylammonium hydroxide (Triton-B) in presence of carbon disulfide. Thus, dithiocarbamates of different amines were prepared in very good to excellent yields. This protocol is mild, chemoselective, and efficient compared to other methods.     

Limit cycles and detailed balance in Fokker-Planck equations

A class of non-linear Fokker Planck equations with exactly known steady state solution is investigated and its relation with the models considered earlier in the literature is discussed. A characterisation of the absence of detailed balance and possible existence of limit cycles is given. The implications of detailed balance on the existence and the character of limit cycle behaviour are studied. It is shown that detailed balance does not determine the existence or non-existence of limit cycles but rather their character.     

Phonon spectrum and Kohn anomaly in platinum

The phonon frequencies of platinum are calculated using a model potential approach. The results are in fair agreement with the experimental data but do not show any Kohn anomaly or any kink, as revealed experimentally. The magnitude of the anomaly has been theoretically estimated and comes out to be very small.
