A study of transverse and longitudinal momentum correlations in proton diffraction dissociation at 14 GeV/c

We present data on momentum correlations both in and out of the production plane for the reactions π⁺p→π_f⁺(π⁺n) and π^?p→π_f^?(π^?Δ⁺⁺). The dissociation products show strikingly similar transverse momentum distributions which in terms of exchange models suggest an equal amount of pion and baryon exchange. For both reactions, we find an approximate factorization in the projectile frame between the transverse momentum of π_f and the longitudinal momenta of the dissociation products. Exchange models predict this result equally in both reactions, but it appears much more clearly in the Δ reaction. Finally, we relate the observed longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions in a way suggested by an isotropic decay model.     

Arithmetic and other properties of certain Delphic semigroups. II

Summary This paper continues [2]. We show that the sets of infinitely divisible elements of the Delphic semigroups ⁺ (of positive renewal sequences) and P (of standard p-functions) are additively convex, and do a Choquet analysis in each case. We draw up the (M, m) diagram for members of , and deduce from it that the product topology on is metrizable. Finally we look at the arithmetic of , showing that the simples are residual in it, and partially identifying I ₀, the set of infinitely divisible elements without simple factors. Many examples are given.I am indebted to Professor D. G. Kendall for his constant help and encouragement in the course of the research leading to this paper and [2].     

Automorphisms of quasitriangular algebras

The outer automorphism group of a nest algebra is canonically isomorphic to the (spatial) automorphism group of the nest itself. The outer automorphism group of the associated quasitriangular algebra is canonically isomorphic to a group of “approximate” automorphisms of the nest. A simple proof that every derivation of a quasitriangular algebra is inner is obtained as a corollary.     

Experimental study of high spin states in the ground state bands of158,160Er,164,166Yb,and168Hf

Ground state rotational bands in the deformed doubly-even rare earth nuclei^158,160Er,^164,166Yb, and¹⁶⁸Hf have been observed in (α, 8n γ) reactions. The γ-spectra associated with these reactions were studied in-beam using conventional spectroscopic methods. In all five nuclei the nuclear moment of inertia of the ground state rotational states was found to increase abruptly as higher spin states were attained. In a plot of the moment of inertia as a function of the angular velocity all these five nuclei display “backbending” curves. Moreover, in¹⁵⁸Er and¹⁶⁶Yb, the curves after passing through a maximum bend subsequently downwards.     

Ground state bands in142Gd and140Sm

The ground state bands of theN=78 isotones¹⁴² Gd and¹⁴⁰Sm were observed up to the 8⁺ state by bombarding¹⁴⁴Sm and¹⁴²Nd withα-particles of energies between 80 and 130 MeV. Excitation functions,γ-γ coincidences, lifetimes and angular distributions were measured. The ground state band in¹⁴⁰Sm is partially fed by an isomeric state ofT _1/2?17ns. No such isomerism is observed for¹⁴²Gd. The level energies are very similar in both cases and agree well with the predictions of the VMI model.
