Non-perturbative QEG corrections to the Yang–Mills beta function

We discuss the non-perturbative renormalization group evolution of the gauge coupling constant by using a truncated form of the functional flow equation for the effective average action of the Yang–Mills-gravity system. Our result is consistent with the conjecture that quantum Einstein gravity (QEG) is asymptotically safe and has a vanishing gauge coupling constant at the non-trivial fixed point.     

First observation of trapped high-field seeking ultracold neutron spin states

Ultracold neutrons were stored in a volume, using a magnetic dipole field shutter. Radial confinement was provided by material walls. Low-field seeking neutrons were axially confined above the magnetic field. High-field seeking neutrons are trapped inside the magnetic field. They can systematically shift the measured neutron lifetime to lower values in experiments with magnetic confinement.     

Kinetic energy spectrum and polarization of neutrons from the reaction 12C(p,n)X at 590 MeV

Abstact: The kinetic energy spectrum and the polarization of the PSI neutron beam produced in the reaction ¹²C(p,n)X at 0° with 590 MeV polarized protons were investigated. A strong energy dependence of the neutron beam polarization is observed which was not expected at the time the neutron beam was built. Received: 3 April 1998     

Observation of a narrow enhancement at 1940 MeV

A narrow enhancement is observed in states produced inclusively in proton-proton interactions at 93 GeV. The mass 1940 ± 1 MeV is consistent with that of the S(1936).     

Polarization in π+p → K+Σ+ backward scattering at 3.5 GeV/c

In a counter and wire spark chamber experiment with a polarized target, backward kaons were detected, and the Σ⁺'s identified by a missing-mass technique. An average polarization of ?0.08 ± 0.05 was found for ?0.2 < u < 0.1 GeV².     

Evidence for a spin-5 boson resonance at 2300 MeV

Evidence is given for the existence of a spin-5 boson resonance from the analysis of the reaction π^?p→K⁺K^?n at 62 GeV incident momentum. A simplified amplitude analysis with a Breit-Wigner ansatz leads to a mass 2307 ± 6 MeV and a width of 245 ± 20 MeV. The quantum numbers of the resonance are J^P = 5^?, C = ?1, and very probably I^G = 1⁺.     

ON QUOTIENTS OF BRAID GROUPS

ABSTRACT.

Let G be the group ?[t, t ^?1] x ?. By studying the action of the braid group B_n on the set Gⁿ , we obtain representations of B_n into a wreath product of the symmetric group and the general linear group over ?[t, t ^?1]. This in particular recovers the Burau representation of the braid group. Furthermore, some quotients of the braid group are obtained by using the representations found.
