Synthesis of 6-phenanthridinones and their heterocyclic analogues through palladium-catalyzed sequential aryl-aryl and N-aryl coupling

[reaction: see text] 6-Phenanthridinones and their heterocyclic analogues were synthesized through a one-pot procedure based on consecutive Pd-catalyzed aryl-aryl and N-aryl coupling from iodoarenes ortho-substituted by electron-releasing substituents and amides of o-bromoarene- and heteroarenecarboxylic acids.     

A new reaction sequence involving palladium-catalyzed unsymmetrical aryl coupling

Biphenylylalkenes containing an ortho substituent in one ring and a different ortho-, meta-, or para-substituent in the other are prepared in satisfactory yield from an ortho-substituted aryl iodide, an ortho-, meta-, or para-substituted aryl bromide, a terminal olefin, and a base in DMF under the joint catalytic action of palladium(0) and norbornene.     

Higher order PDEs and symmetric stable processes

We describe a connection between the semigroup of a symmetric stable process with rational index and higher order partial differential equations. As an application, we obtain a variational formula for the eigenvalues associated with the process killed upon leaving a bounded open set D. The variational formula is more user friendly than the classical Rayleigh--Ritz formula. We illustrate this by obtaining upper bounds on the eigenvalues in terms of Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Laplacian on D. These results generalize some work of Banuelos and Kulczycki on the Cauchy process. Along the way we prove an operator inequality for the operators associated with the transition densities of Brownian motion and the Brownian motion killed upon leaving D.     

The photoreactions of simple amides with NO. Gaining insight into radical bio-damages through an EPR case study

Eight simple amides have been subjected to UV irradiation in the presence of either MNP or NO. In all cases radical species were generated: these were detected by means of EPR spectroscopy in the form of different nitroxides resulting from the trapping of the primary radicals. NO acted as a double spin trap, scavenging a radical to afford a diamagnetic nitroso derivative that in turn acted as trap towards another radical unit. As amido-groups are present in components of skin tissue and may be present in many therapeutic or cosmetic products used as skin sunscreen, and NO is a ubiquitous endogenous reactive species, the nitroxides detected in the present studies might participate in radical processes triggered by sun exposure and resulting in damages, even severe, of biological tissues.
