Laser-induced desorption/ionization from silicon nanowires (SiNW) is an emerging method for mass spectrometry of small to medium-size molecules. In this new technique, we examined the internal energy transfer to seven benzylpyridinium thermometer ions and extracted the corresponding internal energy distributions. To explore the effect of the energy-deposition rate on the internal energy transfer, two lasers with significantly different pulse lengths (4 ns vs 22 ps) were utilized as excitation sources. A comparison of ion yields indicated that the SiNW substrates required 5-8 times less laser fluence for ion production than either matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) or desorption/ionization on silicon (DIOS). In contrast however, the survival yield (SY) values showed that the internal energy transferred to the thermometer ions was more than (ps laser) or comparable to (ns laser) MALDI but it was significantly less than in DIOS. The internal energy transfer was only slightly dependent on laser fluence and on wire density. These effects were rationalized in terms of the confinement of thermal energy in the nanowires and of unimpeded three-dimensional plume expansion. Unlike in MALDI from CHCA and in perfluorophenyl-derivatized DIOS, for desorption from SiNWs the effect of laser pulse length on the internal energy transfer was found to be negligible.  相似文献

For longitudinal data, the modeling of a correlation matrix ?R can be a difficult statistical task due to both the positive definite and the unit diagonal constraints. Because the number of parameters increases quadratically in the dimension, it is often useful to consider a sparse parameterization. We introduce a pair of prior distributions on the set of correlation matrices for longitudinal data through the partial autocorrelations (PACs), which vary independently over (?1,1). The first prior shrinks each of the PACs toward zero with increasingly aggressive shrinkage in lag. The second prior (a selection prior) is a mixture of a zero point mass and a continuous component for each PAC, allowing for a sparse representation. The structure implied under our priors is readily interpretable for time-ordered responses because each zero PAC implies a conditional independence relationship in the distribution of the data. Selection priors on the PACs provide a computationally attractive alternative to selection on the elements of ?R or ?R? 1 for ordered data. These priors allow for data-dependent shrinkage/selection under an intuitive parameterization in an unconstrained setting. The proposed priors are compared to standard methods through a simulation study and illustrated using a multivariate probit data example. In many processes vital to life, the growth of biological fibers outwards from a membrane surface naturally produces membrane tube tethers or microspikes in biological cells. Here, we investigate the novel effect of pressure difference (due to monomer depletion) on the polymerization dynamics of biological fibers within long membrane tubes. We crucially find that fiber monomers become depleted close to the growing tip as the fiber polymerizes, thus reducing the local pressure, and hence decreasing the membrane tube radius at the tip. This process is found to slow the growth of the fiber, a process which becomes important when we go on to construct a dynamical theory for biopolymer growth in long, narrow tubes. Our result is interesting in that it emphasizes how "passive" biological transport mechanisms such as via pressure differences may play an important role in cell movements.  相似文献

Radiofrequency ablation is the most common minimally invasive therapy used in the United States to treat hepatocellular carcinoma and liver metastases. The ability to perform real-time temperature imaging while a patient is undergoing ablation therapy may help reduce the high recurrence rates following ablation therapy. Ultrasound echo signals undergo time shifts with increasing temperature due to sound speed and thermal expansion, which are tracked using both 1D cross correlation and 2D block matching based speckle tracking methods. In this paper, we present a quantitative evaluation of the accuracy and precision of temperature estimation using the above algorithms on both simulated and experimental data.A finite element analysis simulation of radiofrequency ablation of hepatic tissue was developed. Finite element analysis provides a method to obtain the exact temperature distribution along with a mapping of the tissue displacement due to thermal expansion. These local displacement maps were combined with the displacement due to speed of sound changes and utilized to generate ultrasound radiofrequency frames at specified time increments over the entire ablation procedure. These echo signals provide an ideal test-bed to evaluate the performance of both speckle tracking methods, since the estimated temperature results can be compared directly to the exact finite element solution. Our results indicate that the 1D cross-correlation (CC) method underestimates the cumulative displacement by 0.20 mm, while the underestimation with 2D block matching (BM) is about 0.14 mm after 360 s of ablation. The 1D method also overestimates the size of the ablated region by 5.4% when compared to 2.4% with the 2D method after 720 s of ablation. Hence 2D block matching provides better tracking of temperature variations when compared to the 1D cross-correlation method over the entire duration of the ablation procedure. In addition, results obtained using 1D cross-correlation diverge from the ideal finite element results after 7 min of ablation and for temperatures greater than 65 °C.In a similar manner, experimental results presented using a tissue-mimicking phantom also demonstrate that the maximum percent difference with 2D block matching was 5%, when compared to 31% with the 1D method over the 700 s heating duration on the phantom.  相似文献

Piezocatalysis offers a means to transduce mechanical energy into chemical potential, harnessing physical force to drive redox reactions. Working in the solid state, we show here that piezoelectric BaTiO3 nanoparticles can transduce mechanical load into a flux of reactive radical species capable of initiating solid state free radical polymerization. Activation of a BaTiO3 powder by ball milling, striking with a hammer, or repeated compressive loading generates highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (⋅OH), which readily initiate radical chain growth and crosslinking of solid acrylamide, acrylate, methacrylate and styrenic monomers. Control experiments indicate a critical role for chemisorbed water on the BaTiO3 nanoparticle surface, which is oxidized to ⋅OH via mechanoredox catalysis. The force-induced production of radicals by compressing dry piezoelectric materials represents a promising new route to harness mechanical energy for solid state radical synthesis.  相似文献

A method has been described for the determination of iron from fish otoliths containing high levels of calcium by collision cell technology (CCT) ICP-MS. Iron (Fe) in otolith solutions was quantitatively coprecipitated with small amounts of calcium hydroxide by adding 1.0 M sodium hydroxide solution. The performance of CCT-ICP-MS pressurized with He/H(2) cell gas was investigated on the elimination of Ca-based spectral interferences at m/z 54, 56 and 57. Molecular ion interferences at m/z 54 and 56 were reduced by 2 orders of magnitude. However, the interferences at m/z 57 increased by the same amount in the presence of Ca in solutions owing to the formation of (40)Ca(16) OH(+) through reactions with H(2) in collision cell, indicating that (57)Fe was not suitable for the determination of Fe from otoliths. Results for (56)Fe suffered significantly from interferences of Ca-based molecular ions when the Ca concentration in solution exceeded 100 microg ml(-1), for which matrix-matched calibration was required for accurate determination. CCT with the aid of He/H(2) cell gas proved to be very effective in eliminating the interferences ((40)Ar(14)N(+) and (40)Ca(14)N(+)) at m/z 54. Presence of Ca up to 300 microg ml(-1) had virtually no effect on the ion signals of (54)Fe, which with low background signals, afforded accurate determination of Fe from otoliths by using aqueous external standards.  相似文献

A conjugate addition/asymmetric protonation/aza‐Prins cascade reaction has been developed for the enantioselective synthesis of fused polycyclic indolines. A catalyst system generated from ZrCl4 and 3,3′‐dibromo‐BINOL enables the synthesis of a range of polycyclic indolines in good yields and with high enantioselectivity. A key finding is the use of TMSCl and 2,6‐dibromophenol as a stoichiometric source of HCl to facilitate catalyst turnover. This transformation is the first in which a ZrCl4?BINOL complex serves as a chiral Lewis‐acid‐assisted Brønsted acid.  相似文献
