At ambient temperatures, a permanent change due to neutron irradiation has been identified in the luminescent properties of the common mineral calcite. Calcite is one of many ubiquitous minerals that are known to exhibit luminescence under electron bombardment, a process known as cathodoluminescence (CL). The UV–Visible spectra of individual calcite grains were measured with CL spectroscopy before and after neutron irradiation. Exposure to neutrons causes additional crystal lattice defects (beyond those naturally-occurring) that leave a permanent, readily-measurable CL signature in the 515 nm region of the spectrum. Dose response results following irradiation have been measured and a spectroscopic signature is described that increases proportionately to neutron dose. The CL measurements are complicated by a dependence on the orientation relative to direction of excitation. When taken into account, the total dose to the crystal can be estimated, and possibly even the direction of the neutron source can be determined. This signature could potentially be developed into a nuclear forensics tool to help identify locations where special nuclear materials have been stored. 相似文献

We consider an initial value problem for a nonlocal differential equation with a bistable nonlinearity in several space dimensions. The equation is an ordinary differential equation with respect to the time variable t, while the nonlocal term is expressed in terms of spatial integration. We discuss the large time behavior of solutions and prove, among other things, the convergence to steady-states. Sulfated glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) were isolated and characterized in thoracic muscle, fat body, whole digestive tract (stomach+intestine) and reproductive tract of adult male cockroaches, Periplaneta americana. Heparan sulfate (HS) was the predominant sulfated GAG species in the tissues analyzed, corresponding to more than 90% of the total sulfated GAG content. In both the thoracic muscle and fat body it was the only sulfated GAG species detected. We also determined the location of sulfated GAGs in most of these organs by histochemical analysis using 1,9-dimethylmethylene blue. In the thoracic muscle, sulfated GAG metachromatic staining was detected only in the connective tissue that surrounds the muscle bundles or fascicles. In the intestinal tract, metachromatic staining was observed in both epithelial and lining columnar cells. Only spermatozoa presented metachromatic material in the male reproductive tract. Since, HS corresponds to 90-100% of total sulfated GAGs in these tissues, the metachromatic staining specifically reflects the location of this particular sulfated GAG in these organs. In conclusion, the present study extends previous observations on the GAG composition in cockroaches providing new information on the tissue distribution and location of HS in several internal organs of adult males of the cockroach P. americana. 相似文献

Understanding the primary steps following UV photoexcitation in sulphur-substituted DNA bases (thiobases) is fundamental for developing new phototherapeutic drugs. However, the investigation of the excited-state dynamics in sub-100 fs time scales has been elusive until now due to technical challenges. Here, we track the ultrafast decay mechanisms that lead to the electron trapping in the triplet manifold for 6-thioguanine in an aqueous solution, using broadband transient absorption spectroscopy with a sub-20 fs temporal resolution. We obtain experimental evidence of the fast internal conversion from the S2(ππ*) to the S1(nπ*) states, which takes place in about 80 fs and demonstrates that the S1(nπ*) state acts as a doorway to the triplet population in 522 fs. Our results are supported by MS-CASPT2 calculations, predicting a planar S2(ππ*) pseudo-minimum in agreement with the stimulated emission signal observed in the experiment. 相似文献

The formation of supramolecular host–guest complexes is a very useful and widely employed tool in chemistry. However, supramolecular chemistry in non‐conventional solvents such as supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2), one of the most promising sustainable solvents, is still in its infancy. In this work, we explored a successful route to the development of green processes in supercritical CO2 by combining a theoretical approach with experiments. We were able to synthesize and characterize an inclusion complex between a polar aromatic molecule (benzoic acid) and peracetylated‐β‐cyclodextrin, which is soluble in the supercritical medium. This finding opens the way to wide, environmental friendly, applications of scCO2 in many areas of chemistry, including supramolecular synthesis, reactivity and catalysis, micro and nano‐particle formation, molecular recognition, as well as enhanced extraction processes with increased selectivity. 相似文献

Formation of γH2AX foci (a marker of DNA double‐strand breaks), rates of foci clearance and apoptosis were investigated in cultured normal human fibroblasts and p53 wild‐type malignant glioma cells after exposure to high‐dose synchrotron‐generated microbeams. Doses up to 283 Gy were delivered using beam geometries that included a microbeam array (50 µm wide, 400 µm spacing), single microbeams (60–570 µm wide) and a broad beam (32 mm wide). The two cell types exhibited similar trends with respect to the initial formation and time‐dependent clearance of γH2AX foci after irradiation. High levels of γH2AX foci persisted as late as 72 h post‐irradiation in the majority of cells within cultures of both cell types. Levels of persistent foci after irradiation via the 570 µm microbeam or broad beam were higher when compared with those observed after exposure to the 60 µm microbeam or microbeam array. Despite persistence of γH2AX foci, these irradiation conditions triggered apoptosis in only a small proportion (<5%) of cells within cultures of both cell types. These results contribute to the understanding of the fundamental biological consequences of high‐dose microbeam irradiations, and implicate the importance of non‐apoptotic responses such as p53‐mediated growth arrest (premature senescence). 相似文献
