Tangent measure distributions of hyperbolic Cantor sets

Tangent measure distributions were introduced byBandt [2] andGraf [8] as a means to describe the local geometry of self-similar sets generated by iteration of contractive similitudes. In this paper we study the tangent measure distributions of hyperbolic Cantor sets generated by certain contractive mappings, which are not necessarily similitudes. We show that the tangent measure distributions of these sets equipped with either Hausdorff- or Gibbs measure are unique almost everywhere and give an explicit formula describing them as probability distributions on the set of limit models ofBedford andFisher [5].

Symmetry breaking on a model of five-mode truncated Navier-Stokes equations

A symmetryless model of nonlinear first-order differential equations, obtained by perturbing a known model of five-mode truncated Navier-Stokes equations, is studied. Some interesting phenomena, such as the existence of an infinite sequence of bifurcations in a very narrow range of the parameter and the simultaneous presence of a strange attractor either with two fixed attracting points or with a periodic attracting orbit, are shown. Furthermore, two new sequences of period doubling bifurcations are found in the unperturbed model.     

Sea-level response to impulsive north winds in the Gulf of Trieste. Event on 25th September 1987

Summary The detailed behaviour of the sea level in the Gulf of Trieste, in the presence of a sharp wind impulse at the first hours on 25th September 1987, is described. For the first time the data have been obtained by means of an ultrasound tide gauge, with a digital record and one minute scanning.

Spectroscopic diagnostics of R.F. discharges at moderate pressure and chemical applications—I. Pure nitrogen

A vibro-rotational analysis has been performed of the second positive system (SPS) of N₂ and of the first negative system (FNS) of N⁺₂ emitted by 35 MHz discharges in flowing nitrogen operated at pressures of 5–50 torr and power densities of the order of 1–10 W-cm^-3. The distributions of the vibrational and of the rotational levels follow Boltzmann's law in both the SPS and the FNS with T_v = 4000°K and T_R = 2800°K for the N₂(C³Π_u) state and T_v = 5100°K and T_R = 5800°K for the N⁺₂(B²Σ⁺_g) state and independent of pressure. Kinetic gas temperatures are between 1200 and 2000°K and increase with pressure; electron temperatures are in the range 15,000–9,500°K. The reversal of line intensities of the SPS and of the FNS observed with increasing pressure has been tentatively interpreted. Possible chemical implications of these results have been examined.     

Functionalized azabicycloalkane amino acids by nitrone 1,3-dipolar intramolecular cycloaddition

[reaction: see text] An efficient and operationally simple method for the synthesis of functionalized azaoxobicyclo[X.3.0]alkane amino acids has been devised. The key step is an intramolecular nitrone cycloaddition on 5-allyl- or 5-homoallylproline that was found to be completely regio- and stereoselective.     

Free-flow isoelectric focusing of proteins remaining in cell fragments following sonication of thyroid carcinoma cells

The method of preparing protein mixtures for electrophoretic analysis of membrane-associated cell proteins was improved. By sonication, about one-half of the proteins of thyroid cells were released into the supernatant, while the other half preferentially comprising membrane proteins still remained in cell fragments, which could be sedimented by centrifugation. After sonication, even those proteins which remained in cell fragments, could completely be dissolved by free-flow isoelectric focusing media. They migrated through the free-flow electrophoresis chamber without forming precipitates. Because of these improvements, it was possible to show that the two thyroid cancer cell lines ML-1 and ONCO-DG1 express cytokeratin 8 at similar rates, but cytokeratins 7 and 18 differently. In addition, the presence of inorganic pyrophosphatase, tubulin-beta-5, and tubulin-beta-1 chains in human thyroid cells was proved for the first time.
