A rare ether-bridged cobalt complex which gives rise to an unusual 'serpentine' metal-ligand binding motif

An unusual metal-ligand binding motif is found in dimeric cobalt(II) complexes coordinated by diamidoether ligands that bridge the metals in a 'serpentine' fashion through the ether donors of the ligand backbone rather than the amido groups.     

Construction of [4.3.1]propellanes via molybdenum fischer carbene complexes

Treatment of molybdenum Fischer carbene complexes with 6-methylene-7-octen-1-yne derivatives at 40 degrees C generates substituted tricyclo[4.3.1.0(1,6)]deca-2,4-dienes in good yield. Pentacarbonyl(butylmethoxycarbene)molybdenum(0) afforded the highest cyclization yields (54%), while the analogous chromium carbene complex gave no reaction. The range of dienyne substrates that participate in this reaction is explored and its mechanism is analyzed and discussed.     

Economics of food irradiation

The number of products being radiation processed worldwide is constantly increasing and today includes such diverse items as medical disposables, fruits and vegetables, spices, meats, seafoods and waste products. This range of products to be processed has resulted in a wide range of irradiator designs and capital and operating cost requirements.This paper discusses the economics of low dose food irradiation applications and the effects of various parameters on unit processing costs. It provides a model for calculating specific unit processing costs by correlating known capital costs with annual operating costs and annual throughputs. It is intended to provide the reader with a general knowledge of how unit processing costs are derived.     

Determination of the diffusion coefficient of water into atelocollagen type I thin films by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy

 The diffusion coefficient of water into thin polymer layers of glutar aldehyde cross-linked atelocollagen type I matrix (sample 1, the typical layer thickness was about 0.065 × 10⁻³ m) at 23 °C was 1.142 × 10⁻¹⁰ m² s⁻¹. At twice the concentration of the cross-linking agent (sample 2) the diffusion coefficient was 2.795 × 10⁻¹⁰ m² s⁻¹. This increase was attributed to the more ordered morphology and the creation of ordered microvoids in the film. A larger surface area is then available for the transport of diffusing molecules, allowing a higher penetration rate of the solvent. Received: 11 January 2000/Accepted: 6 May 2000     

Transmetallation reactions of [Sn(R)2(Ph2PC6H4-2-S)2] with metal complexes of the Group 10: Stereoselective synthesis of cis-[M(Ph2PC6H4-2-S)2] (M=Ni, Pd, Pt)

The complexes cis-[M(Ph₂PC₆H₄-2-S)₂] M=Ni, Pd, Pt were stereoselectively synthesized by transmetallation reactions of [M(Cl)₂(NCC₆H₅)₂] M=Pd, Pt or NiCl₂·6H₂O with [Sn(R)₂(Ph₂PC₆H₄-2-S)₂] R=Ph, ⁿBu or ^tBu. The conformation of the Pd and Pt derivatives being unequivocally confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies showing both metal centers to be into a slightly distorted square planar environment, the main distortion being due to the steric hindrance caused by the aromatic rings in the phosphine moiety.     

Photolysis of diacyl peroxides: a radical-based approach for the synthesis of functionalized amino acids

[reaction: see text] Photolysis of the amino acid derived symmetrical and unsymmetrical diacyl peroxides at 254 nm at low temperature (-78 to -196 degrees C) generates various bis(amino acids) in a concise manner and with orthogonal protection. The methodology was applied to the synthesis of (4R)-5-propyl-L-leucine (PrLeu), a component of HUN-7293.     

X-ray structure and variable temperature NMR spectra of [meso-triarylcorrolato]copper(III)

The diamagnetic square planar d(8) complexes [meso-arylcorrolato]copper(III) become paramagnetic upon warming, indicative of the equilibrium between the [corrolato]copper(III) and the [corrolato](+)* copper(II) forms of the complex. [meso-Triphenylcorrolato]copper(III) was structurally characterized and found to be saddled.     

In situ Fe K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure of a nitrosyl adduct of iron phthalocyanine irreversibly adsorbed on a high area carbon electrode in an acidic electrolyte

Key aspects of the microenvironment surrounding the Fe center in the nitrosyl adduct of iron phthalocyanine, [Fe(Pc)(NO)], have been elucidated from the analysis of the Fe K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of the material adsorbed on the surface of a high area carbon electrode recorded in situ, in 0.5 M H(2)SO(4). Statistical best fits to the EXAFS data place the Fe center in a five-coordinated square pyramidal configuration shifted away from the Pc plane toward the axially bound NO bent at an angle of ca. 40 degrees with respect to the normal to the Pc plane. This environment is analogous to that of Fe in the nitrosyl adduct of crystalline [Fe(TPP)], where TPP = meso-tetraphenylporphyrinato(2-), determined from X-ray diffraction.     

Luminescence-detected phase transitions in lanthanide-containing liquid crystals

Complexes between lanthanide nitrates and a pro-mesogenic 18-membered diaza-substituted coronand are luminescent both as powders and liquid crystals (between 87 and 195 degrees C), and the phase transitions are detected by monitoring luminescence intensity and lifetime.     

Influences of changes in multitopic tris(pyrazolyl)methane ligand topology on silver(I) supramolecular structures

The reactions between silver tetrafluoroborate and the ligands 1,2,4,5-C(6)H(2)[CH(2)OCH(2)C(pz)(3)](4) (L1, pz = pyrazolyl ring), o-C(6)H(4)[CH(2)OCH(2)C(pz)(3)](2) (L2), and m-C(6)H(4)[CH(2)OCH(2)C(pz)(3)](2) (L3) yield coordination polymers of the formula (C(6)H(6)(-)(n)[CH(2)OCH(2)C(pz)(3)](n)(AgBF4)(m))( infinity ) (n = 4, m = 2, 1; n = 2, ortho substitution, m = 1, 2; meta substitution, m = 2, 3). In the solid state, L2 molecules dimerize by a pair of C-H.pi interactions, forming an arrangement that resembles the tetratopic ligand L1. In the solid-state structure of 1, each silver atom is kappa(2)-bonded to two tris(pyrazolyl)methane units from different ligands with the overall structure a polymer made up from 32-atom macrocyclic rings formed by bonding tris(pyrazolyl)methane groups from nonadjacent positions on the central arene rings to the same two silver atoms. In 2, each silver is bonded to two tris(pyrazolyl)methane units in the same kappa(2)-kappa(2) fashion as with 1, forming a polymer chain. The chains are organized into dimeric units by strong face-to-face pi-pi stacking between the central arene rings making bitopic L2 act as half of tetratopic L1. The chains in both structures are organized by weak C-H.F hydrogen bonds and pi-pi stacking interactions into very similar 3D supramolecular architectures. The structure of 3 contains three types of silvers with the overall 3D supramolecular sinusoidal structure comprised of 32-atom macrocycles. Infrared studies confirm the importance of the noncovalent interactions. Calculations at the DFT (B3LYP/6-31G) level of theory have been carried out on L2 and also support C-H.pi interactions. Electrospray mass spectral data collected from acetone or acetonitrile show the presence of aggregated species such as [(L)Ag(2)(BF(4))](+) and [(L)Ag(2)](2+), despite the fact that (1)H NMR spectra of all compounds show that acetonitrile completely displaces the ligand whereas acetone does not.
