Dispersion analysis of the least‐squares finite‐element shallow‐water system

The frequency or dispersion relation for the least‐squares mixed formulation of the shallow‐water equations is analysed. We consider the use of different approximation spaces corresponding to co‐located and staggered meshes, respectively. The study includes the effect of Coriolis, and the dispersion properties are compared analytically and graphically with those of the mixed Galerkin formulation. Using the new in–in method for the synthesis of polyisoprene/polystyrene heteroarm star polymers

The basis of the two‐step in–in method is as follows: star polymers with poly(divinyl benzene) cores, synthesized by the arm‐first method, include many unreacted double bonds in their core, and these double bonds can be attacked by the carbanions of some monomers such as styrene and dienes. In this work, linear polyisoprene chains were used to attack the double bonds existing in the poly(divinyl benzene) cores of polystyrene star polymers, so that a heteroarm star polymer with polystyrene and polyisoprene arms was synthesized. It was later well characterized with size exclusion chromatography, light scattering, viscometry, UV spectroscopy, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, and ¹H NMR. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Preparation and Characteristics of a Cation Exchanger Based on Oxidized Anthracite

The features of anthracite oxidation as influenced by temperature and time were determined. Physicochemical and sorption characteristics of the resulting cation exchanger were studied.     

Method to evaluate the strength of interfaces in polymeric systems

It is shown that CT (compact tension) specimens known from fracture mechanics are adequate to study the strength of interfaces between polymers. The interface is coplanar with the initial notch. The capability of this method is demonstrated by quantifying: (a) the healing procedure of cracks in polystyrene; (b) by elaborating the influence of powders on the welding process in polystyrene; (c) by measuring the strength of interfaces between the different polymers SAN, PMMA, HIPS, PS, PC, and (d) by characterising the influence of a compatibilizer in the interface between PE and HIPS.     

Kinetics of the reactions of the IO radical with dimethyl sulfide,methanethiol, ethylene,and propylene

The reactions of IO radicals with CH₃SCH₃, CH₃SH, C₂H₄, and C₃H₆ have been studied using the discharge flow method with direct detection of IO radicals by mass spectrometry. The absolute rate constants obtained at 298 K are the following: IO + CH₃SCH₃ → products (1): k₁ = (1.5 ± 0.2) × 10^?14; IO + CH₃SH → products (2): k₂ = (6.6 ± 1.3) × 10^?16; IO + C₂H₄ →products (3): k₃ < 2 × 10^?16; IO + C₃H₆ → products (4): k₄ < 2 × 10^?16 (units are cm³ molecule^?1 s^?1). CH₃S(O)CH₃ and HOI were found as products of reactions (1) and (2), respectively. The present lower value of k₁ compared to our previous determination is discussed.     

Improved error estimates for mixed finite-element approximations for nonlinear parabolic equations: The discrete-time case

This article treats mixed finite-element methods for second-order quasilinear parabolic equations. A fully discrete scheme is presented and L₂-error estimates are established. The convergence of both the function value and the flux is demonstrated. In a previous paper, Part I the author introduced powerful numerical methods for dealing with parabolic problems. The technique used here is an extension of the continuous-time results for the discrete-time case. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

A positron annihilation study in some amorphous scintillators

Two organic scintillators — NE104 and a liquid solution of 2,5 diphenyloxazole (PPO) — were investigated through positron annihilation spectroscopy to study the influence of the structural order on the magnetic quenching effect on positron bound systems in solids.Preliminary note in [11]     

Synthesis of 4H-pyrans by O-cyclization of 1,5-diketones

Substituted 4H-pyrans were obtained in high preparative yields by the reaction of 1,5-diketones with acetic anhydride and boron trifluoride etherate in diethyl ether.
