Symmetrical periods used as matching layers in multilayer thin film design

Properties of symmetrical layers as matching layers in multilayer thin film design were analyzed. Acalculation method was presented to derive parameters of desired equivalent refractive index. A harmonicbeam splitter was designed and fabricated to test this matching method.

We give a planar proof of the fact that if G is a 3-regular graph minimal with respect to having crossing number at least 2, then the crossing number of G is 2.

The numerical range of a nonnegative matrix

We offer an almost self-contained development of Perron–Frobenius type results for the numerical range of an (irreducible) nonnegative matrix, rederiving and completing the previous work of Issos, Nylen and Tam, and Tam and Yang on this topic. We solve the open problem of characterizing nonnegative matrices whose numerical ranges are regular convex polygons with center at the origin. Some related results are obtained and some open problems are also posed.     

Free Entropy

Free entropy is the analogue of entropy in free probabilitytheory. The paper is a survey of free entropy, its applicationsto von Neumann algebras and its connections to random matrixtheory, as well as a discussion of open problems and of a basicvariational problem, connected to random multimatrix models.     

Cavity nonlinear optics at low photon numbers from collective atomic motion

We report on Kerr nonlinearity and dispersive optical bistability of a Fabry-Perot optical resonator due to the displacement of ultracold atoms trapped within. In the driven resonator, such collective motion is induced by optical forces acting upon up to 10(5) 87Rb atoms prepared in the lowest band of a one-dimensional intracavity optical lattice. The longevity of atomic motional coherence allows for strongly nonlinear optics at extremely low cavity photon numbers, as demonstrated by the observation of both branches of optical bistability at photon numbers below unity.
