Extensive experimental and theoretical study suggests that interchromophore electrostatic interactions are among the most severe impediments to the induction and stability of large electro-optic coefficients in electric-field-poled organic materials. In this report, multichromophore-containing dendritic materials have been investigated as a means to minimize unwanted attenuation of nonlinear optical (electro-optic) activity at high chromophore loading. The dendritic molecular architectures employed were designed to provide optimized molecular scaffolding for electric-field-induced molecular reorientation. Design parameters were based upon past experimental results in conjunction with statistical and quantum mechanical modeling. The electro-optic behavior of these materials was evaluated through experimental and theoretical analysis. Experimental data collected from the dendrimer structures depict a reasonably linear relationship between chromophore number density (N) and electro-optic activity (r(33)) demonstrating a deviation from the dipolar frustration that typically limits r(33) in conventional chromophore/polymer composite materials. The observed linear dependence holds at higher chromophore densities than those that have been found to be practical in systems of organic NLO chromophores dispersed in polymer hosts. Theoretical analysis of these results using Monte Carlo modeling reproduces the experimentally observed trends confirming linear dependence of electro-optic activity on N in the dendrimer materials. These results provide new insight into the ordering behavior of EO dendrimers and demonstrate that the frequently observed asymptotic dependence of electro-optic activity on chromophore number density may be overcome through rational design.  相似文献

Hall A at Jefferson Lab has recently completed three experiments done using the technique of parity-violating electron scattering. Taken together these experiments are a good demonstration of the versatility of this approach. Looking forward, there are two very large scale parity-violation experiments approved to run in Hall A in the 12 GeV era. The blood coagulation system relies on lipid membrane constituents to act as regulators of the coagulation process upon vascular trauma, and in particular the 2D configuration of the lipid membranes is known to efficiently catalyze enzymatic activity of blood coagulation factors. This work demonstrates a new application of a recently developed methodology to study blood coagulation at lipid membrane interfaces with the use of imaging technology. Lipid membranes with varied net charges were formed on silica supports by systematically using different combinations of lipids where neutral phosphocholine (PC) lipids were mixed with phospholipids having either positively charged ethylphosphocholine (EPC), or negatively charged phosphatidylserine (PS) headgroups. Coagulation imaging demonstrated that negatively charged SiO(2) and membrane surfaces exposing PS (obtained from liposomes containing 30% of PS) had coagulation times which were significantly shorter than those for plain PC membranes and EPC exposing membrane surfaces (obtained from liposomes containing 30% of EPC). Coagulation times decreased non-linearly with increasing negative surface charge for lipid membranes. A threshold value for shorter coagulation times was observed below a PS content of ~6%. We conclude that the lipid membranes on solid support studied with the imaging setup as presented in this study offers a flexible and non-expensive solution for coagulation studies at biological membranes. It will be interesting to extend the present study towards examining coagulation on more complex lipid-based model systems.  相似文献

Noroviruses attach to their host cells through histo blood group antigens (HBGAs), and compounds that interfere with this interaction are likely to be of therapeutic or diagnostic interest. It is shown that NMR binding studies can simultaneously identify and differentiate the site for binding HBGA ligands and complementary ligands from a large compound library, thereby facilitating the design of potent heterobifunctional ligands. Saturation transfer difference (STD) NMR experiments, spin-lock filtered NMR experiments, and interligand NOE (ILOE) experiments in the presence of virus-like particles (VLPs), identified compounds that bind to the HBGA binding site of human norovirus. Based on these data two multivalent prototype entry-inhibitors against norovirus infection were synthesized. A surface plasmon resonance based inhibition assay showed avidity gains of 1000 and one million fold over a millimolar univalent ligand. This suggests that further rational design of multivalent inhibitors based on our strategy will identify potent entry-inhibitors against norovirus infections.  相似文献

An ω‐amino carboxylic acid monomer that contained a nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore was prepared by a convergent synthesis. Strategies for selective protection/deprotection of the amino and carboxylic acid functionalities were developed. The protected monomer, 4‐[N‐(4‐benzyloxycarbonyl)butyl‐N‐methylamino]‐4′‐[2″,5″‐bis(decyloxy)‐4″‐(phthalimidomethyl)benzylsulfonyl]azobenzene, could be deprotected selectively or sequentially to give HOOC‐monomer‐N‐phthaloyl, benzyl‐OOC‐monomer‐NH2, or HOOC‐monomer‐NH2. Sequential synthesis was performed to yield main‐chain NLO dimers and tetramers. This was accomplished by selective deprotection and dicyclohexylcarbodiimide coupling. The HOOC‐monomer‐NH2 was polymerized by treatment with diphenylphosphoryl azide to give a main‐chain NLO polyamide. The monomer, dimer, tetramer, and polymer NLO materials were characterized by 1H, 13C, IR, and UV–visible spectroscopy as well as by gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and elemental analysis. The NLO properties of these materials were measured. Thin films of the oligomers and polymer were prepared by spin casting on indium‐tin oxide coated glass. The second‐order NLO properties of the oligomers and polymer thin films were studied by in situ corona poling/second‐harmonic generation and attenuated total reflection methods. The optimal poling temperatures were significantly lower than the melting temperatures or glass‐transition temperatures of the oligomers and polymer. The poling efficiency increased in the following order: monomer, oligomers, and polymer. An electro‐optic coefficient of 4 pm/V at 1.06 μm was obtained for the polymer. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This paper presents a new volume of fluid (VOF) advection algorithm, termed the defined donating region (DDR) scheme. The algorithm uses a linear piecewise method of free surface reconstruction, coupled to a fully multi‐dimensional method of cell boundary flux integration. The performance of the new scheme has been compared with the performance of a number of alternative schemes using translation, rotation and shear advection tests. The DDR scheme is shown to be generally more accurate than linear constant and flux limited schemes, and comparable with an alternative linear piecewise scheme. The DDR scheme conserves fluid volume rigorously without local redistribution algorithms, and generates no fluid ‘flotsam’ or other debris, making it ideal in applications where stability of the free surface interface is paramount.
