Development of Non-Halogen Flame Retardant Optical Fiber and Optical Fiber Cord

A non-halogen highly flame-retardant 0.9mm optical fiber and 2.0mm simplex optical cord, which are harmonized with the ecosystem, have been developed. The characteristics of them are presented in this paper.     

Dicationic ((−)-sparteine)palladium-catalyzed enantioselective aldol reaction of aldehydes with 1-phenyl-1-trimethylsilyloxyethene, proceeding via a palladium enolate

A dicationic ((−)-sparteine)palladium complex underwent a superior catalytic enantioselective aldol reaction of aldehydes with 1-phenyl-1-trimethylsilyloxyethene performing satisfactorily, starting with ((−)-sparteine)PdCl₂ and AgSbF₆ as catalyst precursors (1 mol % loading) in the presence of 3 Å molecular sieves over the reaction.     

Effect of structural variation within cationic azo-surfactant upon photoresponsive function in aqueous solution

The cationic azo-surfactants possessing different spacers and tail alkyl chain lengths have been synthesized by azocoupling ofp-alkylaniline orop-ethoxyaniline with phenol, followed by alkylation and quaternalization with dibromoalkane and trimethylamine, respectively. These surfactants showed a good solubility in water. A reversibletrans-cis isomerization of the azosurfactants by photoirradiation was assessed by UV-Vis absorption spectra. Due to a difference in HLB between thetrans- andcis-surfactants, the observed critical micelle concentration (CMC) values and the electric conductivity of the surfactant solution at above the CMC were significantly affected by the photoinducedtrans-cis isomerization. The azo-surfactants bearing moderate alkyl chain lengths such as surfactants 6 (R₂=C₂H₄, R₃=C₄H₉) and 9 (R₂=C₄H₈, R₃=C₂H₅) were found to be effective to achieve large CMC changes (3.6 mmol/L for 6 and 5.9 mmol/L for 9) by UV-light irradiation. The replacement of the tail chain species also affected the photoresponsive function. The surfactant 12, possessingp-ethoxy group as the tail chain, was found to form a stable micelle aggregation as compared with the structurally related surfactant 10 having ethyl unit as its tail group, but it exhibited a large CMC change (5.3 mmol/L) by UV-light irradiation.     

Anomalous PL brightening caused by partial Auger recombination of a (D, X) complex during an impact ionization avalanche in n-GaAs

Partial Auger recombination of the (D⁰, X) bound-exciton in n-GaAs at 4.2 K during an impact ionization avalanche under an applied pulse voltage has been investigated. The bright photoluminescence (PL)-pattern observed by applying the pulse voltage, characterizes well the formation of a current density filament. The observation of the bright PL spectra inside the current density filament gives a quite new result concerning the partial Auger recombination process of the (D⁰, X) complex, leaving the neutral donor in the excited states.     

Purification and characterization of gamma-enolase from various mammals.

The gamma subunit of enolase (gamma-enolase) was purified from the brain tissues of cow, dog, goat, pig, rabbit, and rat. The purification was achieved in only three steps: ammonium sulfate-precipitation, DE 53 cellulose ion-exchange chromatography, and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) in a preparative mode. The purification procedure was comparatively more simple than previously reported methods, and the yield of gamma-enolase was sufficient for subsequent structural and immunological analyses. In all mammals, the purified gamma-enolase migrated in sodium dodecyl sulfate-PAGE (SDS-PAGE) with a molecular mass of 46 kilodaltons (kDa), and the immunological cross-reactivity between those gamma-enolases was very strong. The structural homology of these gamma-enolases was examined by peptide mapping using cyanogen bromide cleavage and subsequent two-dimensional electrophoresis. The resulting peptide patterns were highly similar and in cow, dog, and goat, the patterns were almost identical. These results indicate that structural homology, that is, the species non-specificity of gamma-enolase, appears to be very high.     

High-quality hydroxyapatite coating on biocompatible materials by laser-assisted laser ablation method

A new method for high-quality hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating is developed, the laser-assisted laser ablation method. In this method, two lasers are used. One is used for ablation of a HAp target. The other, the assist laser, is used to irradiate a Ti substrate surface. The effects of the assist laser irradiation are to anneal the HAp coating and to improve its adhesive strength to the Ti substrate. The quality of the HAp coating depends on the delay time of the assist-laser irradiation. HAp coatings obtained at a delay time of 10 microseconds or more are more amorphous. It was confirmed that the amorphous part of a coating dissolves in simulated body fluid, while the crystalline part does not. The value of the Ca/P ratio in a coating obtained at a delay time of a few microseconds is close to the stoichiometric value. PACS 81.16.Mk
