Inducing new secondary metabolites through co-cultivation of the fungus Pestalotiopsis sp. with the bacterium Bacillus subtilis

Two new lactones, pestalotiolactones A (1) and B (2), together with three known compounds (3–5) were isolated from the axenic culture of the endophytic fungus Pestalotiopsis sp., obtained from fruits of Drepanocarpus lunatus (Fabaceae). Co-culture of this fungus with Bacillus subtilis afforded two new sesquiterpenoids pestabacillins A (6) and B (7) as well as eight known compounds (8–15). Their structures were elucidated by extensive analysis of the NMR and MS data as well as by comparison with literature data. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities but proved to be inactive.     

Chiral sensing of Eu(III)‐containing achiral polymer complex from chiral amino acids coordination induction

The β‐diketonate‐based achiral polymer P‐1 could be synthesized by the polymerization of 3,7‐dibromo‐2,8‐dimethoxy‐5,5‐dioctyl‐5H‐dibenzo[b,d]silole ( M1 ) with (Z)?1,3‐bis(4‐ethynylphenyl)?3‐hydroxyprop‐en‐1‐one ( M2 ) via typical Sonogashira coupling reaction. The β‐diketonate unit in the main chain backbone of P‐1 can further coordinate with Eu(TTA)_x [TTA^? = 4,4,4‐trifluoro‐1‐(thiophen‐2‐yl)butane‐1,3‐dionate anion, X = 1, 2, 3] to afford corresponding Eu(III)‐containing polymer complexes. The resulting achiral polymer complex P‐2 (X = 2) can exhibit strong circular dichroism (CD) response toward both N‐Boc‐l and d‐ proline enantiomers. The CD signal was preliminarily attributed to coordination induction between chiral N‐Boc‐proline and the Eu(III) complex moiety. The linear regression analysis of CD sensing shows a good agreement between the magnitude of molar ellipticity and concentration of chiral N‐Boc‐l or d‐ proline, which indicates this kind Eu(III)‐containing achiral polymer complex can be used as a chiral probe for enantioselective recognition of N‐Boc‐l or d‐ proline enantiomers based on Cotton effect of CD spectra. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A family of single‐isomer,dicationic cyclodextrin chiral selectors for capillary electrophoresis: Mono‐6A‐ammonium‐6C‐butylimidazolium‐β‐cyclodextrin chlorides

The first member of the single‐isomer, dicationic cyclodextrin (CD) family, 6^A‐ammonium‐6^C‐butylimidazolium‐β‐cyclodextrin chlorides (AMBIMCD), has been synthesized, analytically characterized, and used to separate a variety of acidic enantiomers and amino acids by CE. Starting from mono‐6^A‐azido‐β‐cyclodextrin, the cationic imidazolium and ammonium moieties were subsequently introduced onto primary ring of β‐cyclodextrin via nucleophilic addition and Staudinger reaction. The analytically pure AC regio‐isomer CD was further obtained via column chromatography. This dicationic CD exhibited excellent enantioselectivities for selected analytes at concentration as low as 0.5 mM, which were even better than those of its mono‐imidazolium or ammonium‐substitued counterpart CDs at 10 equivalent concentrations. The effective mobilities of all studied analytes were found to decrease with the concentration of AMBIMCD. Inclusion complexation in combination with eletrostatic interactions seemed to account for the enhanced chiral discrimination process.     

Enzymatic Synthesis of Acylphloroglucinol 3‐C‐Glucosides from 2‐O‐Glucosides using a C‐Glycosyltransferase from Mangifera indica

A green and cost‐effective process for the convenient synthesis of acylphloroglucinol 3‐C‐glucosides from 2‐O‐glucosides was exploited using a novel C‐glycosyltransferase (MiCGTb) from Mangifera indica. Compared with previously characterized CGTs, MiCGTb exhibited unique de‐O‐glucosylation promiscuity and high regioselectivity toward structurally diverse 2‐O‐glucosides of acylphloroglucinol and achieved high yields of C‐glucosides even with a catalytic amount of uridine 5′‐diphosphate (UDP). These findings demonstrate for the first time the significant potential of a single‐enzyme approach to the synthesis of bioactive C‐glucosides from both natural and unnatural acylphloroglucinol 2‐O‐glucosides.     

Efficient Synthesis of Spirooxindole Pyrrolones by a Rhodium(III)‐Catalyzed C−H Activation/Carbene Insertion/Lossen Rearrangement Sequence

A rhodium(III)‐catalyzed domino annulation of simple olefins with diazo oxindoles to give spirooxindole pyrrolone products is described. This reaction can be formally viewed as the result of an anomalous tandem C?H activation, carbene insertion, Lossen rearrangement, and a nucleophilic addition process. The potential utility of this reaction was further demonstrated by the late‐stage diversification of drug molecules.     

Liquid crystalline epoxy resin with improved thermal conductivity by intermolecular dipole–dipole interactions

To address tremendous needs for developing efficiently heat dissipating materials with lightweights, a series of liquid crystalline epoxy resins (LCEs) are designed and synthesized as thermally conductive matrix. All prepared LCEs possess epoxies at the molecular side positions and cyanobiphenyl mesogenic end groups. Based on several experimental results such as differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction, it is found that the LCEs exhibited liquid crystalline mesophases. When LCE is cured with a diamine crosslinker, the cured LCE maintains the oriented LC domain formed in the uncured state, ascribing to a presence of dipole–diploe and π–π interactions between cyanobiphenyl mesogenic end groups. Due to the anisotropic molecular orientation, the cured LCE exhibits a high thermal conductivity of 0.46 W m^?1 K^?1, which is higher than those of commercially available crystalline or amorphous epoxy resins. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hexagonal columnar mesophases of polycatenar para-phenylene connected bis-oxadiazole-based liquid crystals

In this article polycatenar liquid crystals containing two 1,3,4-oxadiazoles interconnected by a para-substituted benzene ring as the central linking unit and three alkoxy chains at each terminal have been synthesised, and investigated by polarising microscopy, DSC and XRD scattering. Molecules with medium chain length form exclusively hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline phases.
