We show that in aqueous solution, diblock copolymers, where one block is hydrophobic and the other hydrophilic can undergo self-assembly in three dimensions in a manner similar to small molecule amphiphiles. In addition, two dimensional self-assembly has been studied at the air-water interface. We describe the various morphologies which have been observed in these systems and the parameters which we can use to tailor them.  相似文献

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are widely expressed in or on various cell types and have diverse functions. In immune cells nAChRs regulate proliferation, differentiation and cytokine release. Specifically, activation of the α7 nAChR reduces inflammation as part of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. Here we review numerous effects of α7 nAChR activation on immune cell function and differentiation. Further, we also describe evidence implicating this receptor and its chaperone RIC-3 in diseases of the central nervous system and in neuroinflammation, focusing on multiple sclerosis (MS) and its animal model, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Deregulated neuroinflammation due to dysfunction of α7 nAChR provides one explanation for involvement of this receptor and of RIC-3 in neurodegenerative diseases. In this review, we also provide evidence implicating α7 nAChRs and RIC-3 in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) involving neuroinflammation. Besides, we will describe the therapeutic implications of activating the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway for diseases involving neuroinflammation.  相似文献

The formation and morphological characteristics of crew‐cut aggregates from blends of polystyrene‐b‐poly(acrylic acid) diblock copolymer and polystyrene homopolymer in solution were studied by static light scattering, transmission electron microscopy and size exclusion chromatography. The crew‐cut aggregates, consisting of a polystyrene core and a poly(acrylic acid) corona, were prepared by direct dissolution of the polymer blends in a selective solvent mixture consisting of 93 wt % dimethylformamide and 7 wt % water. It is found that the aggregation behavior depends strongly on the relative volume fractions of the block copolymer and homopolymer in the blends. This is a result of the difference in solubility between the copolymer and the homopolymer in solution which, in turn, influences their miscibility and mutual solubility and consequently the morphology of the formed crew‐cut aggregates. Specifically, when the homopolymer fraction is low, it is mainly dissolved in the cores of the crew‐cut aggregates formed by the block copolymer. When the homopolymer fraction exceeds its solubility limit in the copolymer micelles, aggregates of another type are formed which contain a major fraction of the homopolymer. These aggregates are usually much larger than the primary micelles and have an internal structure due to the formation of reverse micelles from the dissolved block copolymer chains. The importance of thermodynamic vs. kinetic aspects during the formation of the crew‐cut aggregates is also discussed. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Many physical phenomena develop singular, or nearly singular behavior in localized regions, e.g. boundary layers or blowup solutions. Using uniform grids for such problems becomes computationally prohibitive as the solution approaches singularity. Ren and Wang developed a semi-static adaptive grid method [W. Ren, X.P. Wang, An iterative grid redistribution method for singular problems in multiple dimensions, J. Comput. Phys. 159 (2000) 246–273] for the solution of these problems, known as the iterative grid redistribution (IGR) method. In this study we develop a theoretical basis for semi-static adaptive grid method for singular problems. Based on this theory, we obtain the key result of this study – a methodology for designing robust weight functionals which ensures grid resolution in the singular region, as well as control of the maximal grid spacing in the outer region. Using this methodology, we introduce a semi-static adaptive grid method, which does not involve an iterative procedure for grid redistribution, as in the IGR method. We demonstrate the efficacy of this method with numerical examples of solutions which localize by more than nine orders of magnitude.  相似文献

We introduce a new method to derive lower bounds on randomized and quantum communication complexity. Our method is based on factorization norms, a notion from Banach Space theory. This approach gives us access to several powerful tools from this area such as normed spaces duality and Grothendiek's inequality. This extends the arsenal of methods for deriving lower bounds in communication complexity. As we show, our method subsumes most of the previously known general approaches to lower bounds on communication complexity. Moreover, we extend all (but one) of these lower bounds to the realm of quantum communication complexity with entanglement. Our results also shed some light on the question how much communication can be saved by using entanglement. It is known that entanglement can save one of every two qubits, and examples for which this is tight are also known. The synthesis and characterization of [FeII(trim)2]Cl2 (2), [FeII(trim)2]Br2MeOH (3), and [FeII(trim)2]I2MeOH (4), including the X-ray crystal structure determinations of 2 (50 and 293 K) and 4 (293 K), have been performed and their properties have been examined. In agreement with the magnetic susceptibility results, the M?ssbauer data show the presence of high-spin (HS) to low-spin (LS) crossover with a range of T1/2 larger than 300 K (from approximately 20 K for [FeII(trim)2]F2 (1) to approximately 380 K for 4). All complexes in this series include the same [Fe(trim)2]2+ complex cation: the ligand field comprises a constant contribution from the trim ligands and a variable one originating from the out-of-sphere anions, which is transmitted to the metal center by the connecting imidazole rings and hydrogen bonds. The impressive variation in the intrinsic characteristics of the spin-crossover (SCO) phenomenon in this series is then interpreted as an inductive effect of the anions transmitted to the nitrogen donors through the hydrogen bonds. Based on this qualitative analysis, an increased inductive effect of the out-of-sphere anion corresponds to a decreased SCO temperature T1/2, in agreement with the experimental results. Electronic structure calculations with periodic boundary conditions have been performed that show the importance of intermolecular effects in tuning the ligand field, and thus in determining the transition temperature. Starting with the geometries obtained from the X-ray studies, the [FeII(trim)2]X2 complex molecules 1-4 have been investigated both for the single molecules and the crystal lattices with the local density approximation of density functional theory. The bulk geometries of the complex cations deduced from the X-ray studies and those calculated are in fair agreement for both approaches. However, the trend observed for the transition temperatures of 1-4 disagrees with the trend for the spin-state splittings ES (difference EHS-ELS between the energy of the HS and LS isomers) calculated for the isolated molecules, whereas it agrees with the trend for ES calculated with periodic boundary conditions. The latter calculations predict the strongest stabilization of the HS state for the fluoride complex, which actually is essentially HS above T=50 K, while the most pronounced stabilization of the LS state is predicted for 4, in line with the experimental results.  相似文献

A family of spin-crossover (SC) complexes, [Fe(II)H(3)L(Me)]Cl.X (X(-) = PF(6) (-), AsF(6) (-), SbF(6) (-), CF(3)SO(3) (-)), 1-4, has been synthesized, in which H(3)L(Me) denotes the hexadentate N(6) tripod-like ligand tris[2-{[(2-methylimidazol-4-yl)methylidene]amino}ethyl]amine, containing three imidazole groups, with a view to establishing the effect of the counter anion on the SC behavior. These complexes have been found to crystallize in the same monoclinic crystal system with similar cell dimensions. The general crystal structure consists of a two-dimensional (2D) extended network constructed by NH...Cl- hydrogen bonds between Cl- and the imidazole NH groups of three neighboring [Fe(II)H(3)L(Me)]2+ ions, while the anion X exists as an isolated counter anion and occupies the space between the 2D sheets. Magnetic susceptibilities and M?ssbauer spectra have revealed a variety of SC behaviors depending on the counter anion, including a one-step HS<==>(HS + LS)/2 (1, X = PF(6) (-)), a two-step HS<==>(HS + LS)/2<==>LS with a slow thermal relaxation (2, X = AsF(6) (-)), a gradual one-step HS<==>LS (3, X = SbF(6) (-)), and a steep one-step HS<==>LS with hysteresis (4, X = CF(3)SO(3) (-)). The complexes assume the space group P2(1)/n in the HS state, P2(1) in the HS + LS state, and P2(1)/n in the LS state. The Fe-N bond lengths and the N-Fe-N bond angles are indicative of the HS, HS + LS, and LS states. The molecular volumes, V, of the counter anions have been evaluated by quantum-chemical calculations as follows: 53.4 A(3) (BF(4) (-)), 54.4 A(3) (ClO(4) (-)), 73.0 A(3) (PF(6) (-)), 78.5 A(3) (AsF(6) (-)), 88.7 A(3) (SbF(6) (-)), and 86.9 A(3) (CF(3)SO(3) (-)). The size and shape of the counter anion affects the flexible 2D network structure constructed by the hydrogen bonds, leading to modifications of the SC behavior. These estimated relative sizes of the counter anions correlate well with the observed SC behaviors.  相似文献

In this paper we first introduce a novel fabrication process, which allows for easy integration of thin track-etched nanoporous membranes, within 2D or 3D microchannel networks. In these networks, soluble chemical compounds can diffuse out of the channels through well-defined and spatially organized microfabricated porous openings. Interestingly, multiple micron-scale porous areas can be integrated in the same device and each of these areas can be connected to a different microfluidic channel and reservoir. We then present and characterize several membrane-based microdevices and their use for the generation of stable diffusible concentration gradients and complex dynamic chemical landscapes under shear free conditions. We also demonstrate how a simple flow-focusing geometry can be used to generate "on-demand" concentration profiles. In turn, these devices should provide an ideal experimental framework for high throughput cell-based assays: long term high-resolution video microscopy experiments can be performed, under multiple spatially and temporally controlled chemical conditions, with simple protocols and in a cell-friendly environment.  相似文献

We give bit-size estimates for the coefficients appearing in triangular sets describing positive-dimensional algebraic sets defined over Q. These estimates are worst case upper bounds; they depend only on the degree and height of the underlying algebraic sets. We illustrate the use of these results in the context of a modular algorithm.This extends the results by the first and the last author, which were confined to the case of dimension 0. Our strategy is to get back to dimension 0 by evaluation and interpolation techniques. Even though the main tool (height theory) remains the same, new difficulties arise to control the growth of the coefficients during the interpolation process.  相似文献
