Immobilized heterobimetallic Ru/Co nanoparticle-catalyzed Pauson-Khand-type reactions in the presence of pyridylmethyl formate

Heterobimetallic Ru/Co nanoparticles, immobilized on charcoal, were synthesized and used as catalysts in the Pauson-Khand-type reaction in the presence of pyridylmethyl formate instead of carbon monoxide; the catalysts were effective for intra- and intermolecular reactions and easily reused without loss of catalytic activity.     

Transmetalation as a route to novel styryllithium reagents

[structure: see text] Transmetalation of beta-tributyl(styryl)stannanes with n-BuLi gives the functional equivalents of the corresponding styryllithium intermediates. Reaction of the intermediates with chlorotrimethylsilane, iodomethane, or dimethyl sulfate gives the substituted styryl products in moderate to good yields. In all cases, the configuration about the double bond was retained in the products.     

Detection of chlorinated methanes by tin oxide gas sensors

Tin oxide thin films prepared by thermal oxidation of Sn films were used for the detection of chlorinated methanes (CH2Cl2, CHCl3 and CCl4). This resulted in better chemical selectivity, sensitivity, response speed and detection limit than seen with previous detectors. The temperature dependence of the sensing of 1% CCl4 gas was studied and the best sensing behavior was observed at 300 degrees C. The films showed different chemical selectivity in both speed and direction of sensing response to each gas and were stable for more than 3 weeks under operating conditions. The films showed rapid gas sensing (<40 s to reach 90% of full response) and low detection limits (< 4 ppm CCl4). The role of oxygen in the detection of chlorinated methanes and in resistance changes without chlorinated methanes was also studied. The changes at the surface of the film after gas sensing were examined using scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry.     

Dicobalt octacarbonyl catalyzed carbonylated cycloaddition of triynes to functionalized tetracycles

[reaction: see text]. We have demonstrated that a dicobalt octacarbonyl catalyzed double [2 + 2 + 1] carbonylative cycloaddition reaction of triyne can be carried out to yield a novel 5.5.5.6 tetracyclic di-enone system.     

Role of stress on charge transfer through self-assembled alkanethiol monolayers on Au

We have studied charge transfer through alkanethiol molecules self-assembled on Au(111) substrates using interfacial force microscopy. Simultaneous measurement of the tip-substrate current and the normal interfacial force reveals the critical role of tip-film contact. Measurable currents are seen only for tip-applied stresses above about 20 MPa, after which the current rises exponential with stress. We suggest that charge transfer results from stress-induced band-gap states near the Fermi level in these normally highly insulating molecular films.     

Hydrodynamics of nuclear matter in the chiral limit

Using the Poisson bracket method, we construct the hydrodynamics of nuclear matter in the chiral limit, which describes the dynamics of all low-energy degrees of freedom, including the fluid-dynamical and pionic ones. The hydrodynamic equations contain, beside five Euler equations of relativistic fluid dynamics, N(2)(f)-1 second order equations describing propagating pions and N(2)(f)-1 first order equations describing the advection of the vector isospin charges. We present hydrodynamic arguments showing that the pion velocity vanishes at the second order phase transition at N(f) = 2.     

Stress dependence of growth mode change of epitaxial layered cobaltite γ-Na0.7CoO2

We report stress dependence of growth characteristics of epitaxial γ-Na_0.7CoO₂ films on various substrates deposited by pulsed laser deposition method. On the sapphire substrate, the γ-Na_0.7CoO₂ thin film exhibits spiral surface growth with multi-terraces and highly crystallized texture. For the γ-Na_0.7CoO₂ thin film grown on the (1 1 1) SrTiO₃ substrate, the nano-islands of ∼30 nm diameter on the hexagonal grains are observed. These islands indicate that the growth mode changes from step-flow growth mode to Stranski-Krastanow (SK) growth mode. On the (1 1 1) MgO substrate, the large grains formed by excess adatoms covering an aperture between hexagonal grains are observed. These experimental demonstrations and controllability could provide opportunities of strain effects of Na_xCoO₂, physical properties of thin films, and growth dynamics of heterogeneous epitaxial thin films.     

Photoluminescence of ZnO nanowires grown on sapphire (1 1 2¯ 0) substrates

ZnO nanowires were fabricated on c-plane (0 0 0 1), a-plane (1 1 2¯ 0) sapphire, and boron doped p-type (1 0 0) Si substrates in vacuum furnace by simple physical vapor deposition. Room temperature photoluminescence spectra of the nanowires show the near band-edge emission and the deep-level green light emission. The ZnO nanowires formed on sapphire (1 1 2¯ 0) substrates exhibited enhancement on optical properties and better crystalline structures than those of nanowires grown on other substrates. The formation mechanism and the effect of substrate direction on structural and optical properties of the nanowires are discussed.     

Multiferroic characteristics of the strained epitaxial Bi0.9Ho0.1FeO3 thin film

We fabricated high quality epitaxial Bi_0.9Ho_0.1FeO₃ thin films which exhibited the tetragonally stained structure with a c/a ratio of about 1.04. The Bi_0.9Ho_0.1FeO₃ thin film showed a good ferroelectric property with the high remanent polarization (P_r) of about 80 μC/cm². The ferromagnetic hysteresis loop with a clear remanent magnetization was shown. The coercive field and the remanent magnetization of the Bi_0.9Ho_0.1FeO₃ film are 6200 Oe and 1.7 emu/g, respectively. The abrupt conduction due to space charge limited (SCL) was revealed in leakage current density versus electric field.     

A new minor butenolide from <Emphasis Type="Italic">Machilus odoratissima</Emphasis>

A new butenolide, designated odoratinolide (1), was isolated from the bark of the Vietnamese medicinal plant Machilus odoratissima. Its structure was determined by spectroscopic analyses.
