Identification of predominant point defects in nonstoichiometric CuInse2 by X-ray powder diffraction

Refinement of structural parameter, occupancy factors and temperature factors of three indium rich samples enabled type and concentration of intrinsic point defects to be determined. Vacancies on copper and indium sites (8 and 5%, respectively) and indium atoms on copper sites (5%) were identified. Indium atoms exhibit a large thermal vibration amplitude.     

Atomic mechanisms of superionic conductivity in fluorite

The subsequent melting/crystallization of the two sub-lattices of CaF₂ is explored by molecular dynamics simulations. Both, heating from 100 K and cooling from 2500 K encompasses two transitions, i.e. the melting/recrystallization of the fluoride sub-lattice and the of whole crystal at different temperatures. Solid state F^? ion conductivity is observed in a temperature range of about 1500–2000 K which reflects a reasonable agreement with the experiment. A systematic study of fluoride migration revealed the atomistic mechanisms of the spontaneous formation of Frenkel defects, followed by void translocation and terminated by recombination of interstitial fluoride ions and vacancies.

The photo reaction ${}^6\text{Li}\text{(γ, τ)}{}^3\text{H}$ which contributes appreciably to the nuclear photo effect for photon energies between 16 and 35 MeV is studied in the framework of the unified theory of nuclear reactions based on cluster representations.

How does water boil?

Insight into the boiling of water is obtained from molecular dynamics simulations. The process is initiated by the spontaneous formation of small vacuum cavities in liquid water. By themselves, these defects are very short lived. If, however, several cavities occur at close distances, they are likely to merge into larger vacuum holes. At the liquid-vapor interfaces, single or small groups of water molecules tend to leave the liquid surface. Once the system is propagated beyond the transition state, these evaporation events outnumber the competing reintegration into the hydrogen-bonded network.
