Mechanism of Dehydrobromination of 1,2-Dibromo-1-phenylethane under Conditions of Phase-Transfer Catalysis

Selective dehydrobromination of 1,2-dibromo-1-phenylethane to -bromostyrene was effected under conditions of phase-transfer catalysis in systems containing KOH, toluene, and tetraalkylammonium bromides. The high selectivity of the catalytic systems originates from stabilization by lipophilic cation of the phase-transfer catalyst of a E1cb-like transition state in the E2 mechanism. In the presence of a catalytic amount of lipophilic alcohols, phenylacetylene was obtained. Substrate activation by alcohol molecules is explained by enhancement of the acceptor power of halogen atoms due to solvation and by increased mobility of hydrogen atoms.     

Hydrodynamic and conformational properties of cellulose myristate molecules in solution

Cellulose myristate samples with a degree of substitution of 230–250 have been studied by the methods of molecular hydrodynamics (viscometry, analytical ultracentrifugation (flotation), and isothermal translational diffusion) in chloroform in the range M = (56–652) × 10³. The experimental evidence has been interpreted within the framework of the generalized wormlike Yamakawa-Fuji model with the following parameters: the persistence length a = 115 × 10^?8 cm, the chain diameter d = 45 × 10^?8 cm, and the molecular mass per unit chain length M _L = 270 × 10⁸ cm^?1. It has been inferred that the polymer dissolves in chloroform in the form of dimers.     

Determination of enthalpies of formation of organic free radicals from bond dissociation energies 2. Halosubstituted radicals

The enthalpies of formation (ΔH _f ^o) for 23 halosubstituted radicals were determined from the published data on bond dissociation energies. The ΔH _f ^o values of the corresponding molecules necessary for the calculation of ΔH _f ^o of the radicals were taken from handbooks or calculated by the additive-group method. The conjugation energies of the radicals are calculated, and the effect of substituents at the π-system on these values was shown. Simultaneous comparison of δ31P and 1JPN for the assignment of E/Z-stereochemistry of the phosphorus-nitrogen double bond in iminophosphines R-P=N-R′

 The analysis of ³¹P and ¹⁵N NMR data of a series of 40 iminophosphines R-P=N-R′ reveals that the E/Z-stereochemistry of the PN double bond can be predicted on the basis of a simultaneous comparison of the values of δ³¹P and ¹J_PN. Meldrum's acid and its analogs

2-Substituted or 2,2-disubstituted 4,6-dioxo-1,3-dioxanes, which are analogs of Meldrum's acid and were obtained by reaction of malonic acid with acetic anhydride and the appropriate carbonyl compound in the presence of sulfuric acid, exist in solution preferably in a single form according to the PMR and ¹³C NMR spectral data. Fluctuation of the CH₂ group is not observed. The mass spectra are characteristic and are distinguished by splitting out of the carbonyl compound from the molecular ion or successive splitting out of CO₂ and ketene molecules.
