Synthesis of some benzimidazole- and benzothiazole-derived ligand systems and their precursory diacids

Procedures are described for the preparation of various bidentate and linear tetradentate benzimidazoles and benzothiazoles incorporating units such as pyridyl and thioether, and for the preparation of certain thioether dicarboxylic acids precursory to them. Condensations of ortho-functinal anilines with carboxylic acids were carried out in polyphosphoric acid or refluxing HCl solution. Syntheses are reported for: [HO₂C(CH₂)2S(CH₂)₂]₂X (X = O, S), 1,9-bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)-2,5,8-trithianonane, 1,11-bis(N-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)-3,6,9-trithiaundecane, 1,11-bis(2-benzimidazol-2-yl)-6-oxo-3,9-dithiaundecane, 2-(2-pyridyl)benzothiazole, 2,6-bis(benzothiazol-2-yl)pyridine, 2-(2-pyridyl)-N-methylbenzimidazole, 2-(2-pyridylmethyl)benzimidazole and 2-(N-methyl-2-piperidyl)benzimidazole. The compounds were characterized, where appropriate, by their mass, uv and ¹H-nmr spectra.     

A diruthenium-substituted polyoxometalate as an electrocatalyst for oxygen generation

Transition metal heteropolyanions have been used to catalyze a variety of organic oxidations but have not previously been used for O2 generation, despite sharing some structural similarities with dioxoruthenium water-oxidation catalysts. In this study, we report that the di-Ru-substituted polyoxometalate (POM) [Ru2Zn2(H2O)2(ZnW9O34)2]14- can be used to catalyze the electrochemical generation of O2. By comparing the behavior of this compound to that observed using a mono-Ru-substituted POM catalyst, we show that adjacent Ru sites are necessary to observe O2 generation. These observations suggest a reaction pathway involving two Ru-bound oxygen species combining to form O2 and are consistent with the accepted mechanism of electrochemical oxygen evolution. Finally, analysis of the observed electrode kinetics yields a Tafel slope of roughly 120 mV, which is similar to values reported previously for perovskite anodes.     

Vesicle adsorption and lipid bilayer formation on glass studied by atomic force microscopy

The adsorption of phosphatidylcholine (PC) vesicles (30, 50, and 100 nm nominal diameters) and of dye-labeled PC vesicles (labeled with 6% Texas Red fluorophore (TR) and encapsulated carboxy fluorescein (CF)) to glass surfaces was studied by contact mode atomic force microscopy in aqueous buffer. These studies were performed in part to unravel details of the previously observed isolated rupture of dye-labeled PC vesicles on glass (Johnson, J. M.; Ha, T.; Chu, S.; Boxer, S. G. Biophys. J. 2002, 83, 3371-3379), specifically to differentiate partial rupture, that is, pore formation and leakage of entrapped dye, from full rupture to form bilayer disks. In addition, the adhesion potential of PC vesicles on glass was calculated based upon the adhesion-driven flattening of adsorbed vesicles and a newly developed theoretical model. The vesicles were found to flatten considerably upon adsorption to glass (width-to-height ratio of approximately 5), which leads to an estimate for the adhesion potential and for the critical rupture radius of 1.5 x 10(-4) J/m2 and 250 nm, respectively. Independent of vesicle size and loading with dye molecules, the adsorption of intact vesicles was observed at all concentrations below a threshold concentration, above which the formation of smooth lipid bilayers occurred. In conjunction with previous work (Johnson, J. M.; Ha, T.; Chu, S.; Boxer, S. G. Biophys. J. 2002, 83, 3371-3379), these data show that 6% TR 20 mM CF vesicles adsorb to the surface intact but undergo partial rupture in which they exchange content with the external buffer.     

Asymmetric syntheses of fused bicyclic compounds by conjugate additions of allylic organolithium species to activated olefins and subsequent cyclizations

[reaction: see text]. Addition of the configurationally stable organolithium species produced by enantioselective deprotonation of N-Boc-N-(p-methoxyphenyl) allylamines to alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds affords 1,4-addition products in good yields with high diastereomeric and enantiomeric ratios. Further transformations of these compounds provide [3.3.0]-, [4.3.0]-, [5.3.0]-, and [5.4.0]-carbocycles and heterocycles with high stereoselectivities.     

A structural analysis of the complexes of (S,S)-dimethylpyridino-18-crown-6 with (R) and (S)-[α-(1-naphthyl)ethyl]ammonium perchlorate by NMR techniques and molecular modeling

Significant - interaction is found in the complexes of (S, S)-dimethylpyridino-18-crown-6 with (R)- and (S)-[-(1-naphthyl)ethyl]ammonium perchlorate. This finding is supported by the¹H NOESY NMR spectral technique, greater chemical shift changes of aromatic protons in both host and guest molecules upon complexation, and by molecular mechanics calculations. Because of the flexibility of the ligand, the tripod hydrogen bonding causes¹³C relaxation times of all periphery carbons to decrease without significant selectivity. Rotational energy barrier calculations of the methyl groups of the complexed ligand also show that the (S, S)-host-(R)-guest is the more stable complex.     

Crystal field in rare-earth fluorides—I. Molecular orbital calculation of PrF3 parameters

Crystal field parameters have been calculated, using ab initio LCAO-MO theory, for the ion pair Pr³⁺—F⁻ at five metal ligand distances appropriate to Pr³⁺:LaF₃. The parameters are found to be twice as large as in PrCl₃, but with only half the distance dependence. In the absence of precise Pr³⁺:LaF₃ experimental parameters only qualitative agreement with experiment can be recorded. However, very good numerical agreement is obtained with the experimental covalency parameters for Yb³⁺:CaF₂, which provides a check on the methods adopted for calculating energy denominators.     

Pseudo goldstones at future colliders from the extended BESS model

Decays and branching ratios of light neutralino production in $Z_R^0 \to \tilde \chi _i^0 \tilde \chi _j^0 $ in the left-right super-symmetric model are considered. We study in detail the signatures of one and two sided events in $Z_R^0 \to \tilde \chi _1^0 \tilde \chi _2^0 $ and $Z_R^0 \to \tilde \chi _2^0 \tilde \chi _2^0 $ respectively, and their dependence on the parameters of the light neutralino mixing matrix.     

Primeness of the enveloping algebra of a Cartan type Lie superalgebra

We show that a primeness criterion for enveloping algebras of Lie superalgebras discovered by Bell is applicable to the Cartan type Lie superalgebras , even. Other algebras are considered but there are no definitive answers in these cases.
