We present experimental and numerical results for nonlinear polarization evolution of femtosecond pulses during propagation in microstructure fiber. Numerical modeling shows that fiber dispersion permits a long interaction length between the components polarized along the two principal axes, thereby enhancing the effective nonlinear polarization evolution in microstructure fiber.  相似文献

We experimentally study the spectra of the transient Faraday and Kerr effects near exciton resonances of a GaAs multiple quantum well. A multilayer calculation with a transfer matrix model accounts quantitatively for the linear transmission (reflectivity) spectra and the Faraday (Kerr) spectra. The Faraday and Kerr spectra do not obey a Kramers-Kronig relation. This phenomenon was found to be due to the multiple reflection effects on the Kerr spectra.  相似文献

We experimentally observe polarization-locked vector solitons in optical fiber. Polarization locked-vector solitons use nonlinearity to preserve their polarization state despite the presence of birefringence. To achieve conditions where the delicate balance between nonlinearity and birefringence can survive, we studied the polarization evolution of the pulses circulating in a laser constructed entirely of optical fiber. We observe two distinct states with fixed polarization. This first state occurs for very small values birefringence and is elliptically polarized. We measure the relative phase between orthogonal components along the two principal axes to be +/-pi/2. The relative amplitude varies linearly with the magnitude of the birefringence. This state is a polarization locked vector soliton. The second, linearly polarized, state occurs for larger values of birefringence. The second state is due to the fast axis instability. We provide complete characterization of these states, and present a physical explanation of both of these states and the stability of the polarization locked vector solitons. We study many-body interactions between excitons in semiconductors by applying the powerful technique of optical two-dimensional Fourier transform spectroscopy. A two-dimensional spectrum correlates the phase (frequency) evolution of the nonlinear polarization field during the initial evolution and the final detection period. A single two-dimensional spectrum can identify couplings between resonances, separate quantum mechanical pathways, and distinguish among microscopic many-body interactions.  相似文献

Abstract— Previous information about the spectral and photochemical properties of phytochrome in vitro has apparently been determined in large part with chromopeptides derived from the native molecule by proteolysis. Characterization of high-mol-wt phytochrome in vitro has led to the observation that the far-red-absorbing form (Pfr) may undergo relatively large and reversible changes in far-red extinction. Phytochrome preparations which exhibit reduced far-red extinction as Pfr also exhibit a rapid reappearance of red absorbance after discontinuing the red illumination used to establish photostationary equilibrium. This rapid change in the red spectral region is not accompanied by any equivalent absorbance change in the far-red. The molecular basis for these newly reported spectral properties is not known. However, both properties may be eliminated by the addition of either 2-mercaptoethanol or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid.  相似文献

Transient four-wave mixing experiments on a dense potassium vapor, which has a dephasing time long compared to the collision duration, reveal distinct signatures of non-Markovian dynamics. Theoretical fits assuming stochastic fluctuation of the excited-state frequencies confirm that the two-time correlation function has a finite temporal width.  相似文献

Passively mode-locked lasers with intracavity weakly birefringent fiber are theoretically analyzed based on two coupled complex one-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau equations. The model includes fiber birefringence, spectral filtering, saturable gain, and saturable loss. Phase-locked soliton solutions are found for small amounts of birefringence and several types of soliton with periodic polarization evolution for higher amounts of birefringence. Numerical simulations show qualitative agreement with experimental results.  相似文献

Frequency combs generated by trains of pulses emitted from mode-locked lasers are analyzed when the center time and phase of the pulses undergo noise-induced random walk, which broadens the comb lines. Asymptotic analysis and computation reveal that, when the standard deviation of the center-time jitter of the nth pulse scales as n(p/2) where p is a jitter exponent, the linewidth of the kth comb line scales as k(2/p). The linear-dispersionless (p=1) and pure-soliton (p=3) dynamics in lasers are derived as special cases of this time-frequency duality relation. In addition, the linewidth induced by phase jitter decreases with power P(out), as (P(out))(-1/p).  相似文献
