Variations on the warped deformed conifold

The warped deformed conifold background of type IIB theory is dual to the cascading SU(M(p+1))×SU(Mp) gauge theory. We show that this background realizes the (super-)Goldstone mechanism where the U(1) baryon number symmetry is broken by expectation values of baryonic operators. The resulting massless pseudo-scalar and scalar glueballs are identified in the supergravity spectrum. A D-string is then dual to a global string in the gauge theory. Upon compactification, the Goldstone mechanism turns into the Higgs mechanism, and the global strings turn into ANO strings. To cite this article: S.S. Gubser et al., C. R. Physique 5 (2004).

La configuration de fond pour la théorie de type IIB donnée par le conifold voilé déformé est duale à la cascade de théorie de jauge SU(M(p+1))×SU(Mp). Nous montrons que cette configuration donne une réalisation du mécanisme de (super-)Goldstone où la symètrie baryonique U(1) est brisée par la valeur moyenne dans le vide des opérateurs baryoniques. Les boules de glue pseudo-scalaires et scalaires de masse nulle résultantes sont identifiées dans le spectre de supegravité. Une D-corde est alors duale à une corde globale dans la théorie de jauge. Rapid Method to Screen Unopened Bottles to Detect Concealed Drugs

A bottle screening method to detect smuggling drugs was developed based on a series of rapid and automated magnetic resonance measurements. Liquid alteration is detected by evaluating chemical and physical properties of the liquid, scanning the bottle with a compact, non-contact magnetic resonance probe. Chemical and molecular diffusion changes are detected by means of the magnetic resonance relaxation time. The inspection device automatically detects the presence of concealed powders dissolved in liquids in a second timescale. The non-ionizing, non-contact method effectively screens bottles, regardless of their shape, size, and color. The proposed system configuration does not require a large magnet generating uniform magnetic fields; rather it inspects the liquid using a compact probe positioned on the wall of the bottle. For a variety of samples tested, the screening does not require detailed information on the expected content of the bottle.

Microperforated insertion units: An alternative strategy to design microperforated panels

Microperforated panels (MPPs) coupled to a rigid wall have been proposed recently as an alternative to porous absorbers in situations having concerns with bacterial contamination and small particles discharge, like food, pharmaceutical and microelectronic industries. There exists also an increasing interest for MPP absorbers in the transportation industry and civil engineering. In general, an optimally designed MPP with good broadband absorption requires many submillimetric holes distributed over a panel of also submillimetric thickness. Such thin plates or foils become so fragile that they need to be protected from mechanical damage. In this paper, an alternative strategy is investigated which allows the design of MPPs with panels of millimetric thickness while maintaining their acoustic performance. These absorbers, named microperforated insertion units (MIUs), avoid the structural problems of the classical MPPs. An assessment of the sound absorption properties of these structures is presented. Comparisons between calculations and measurements are also made under two experimental conditions: plane waves at normal incidence (impedance tube) and free field (anechoic room).     

Atmospheric aerosol limb scanning based on the lunar eclipses photometry

The work is devoted to the analysis of the surface photometric observations of two total lunar eclipses in 2004. The lunar surface relative brightness distribution inside the umbra was used to retrieve the vertical distribution of aerosol extinction of the solar radiation expanding by a tangent path and its dependence on the location at the limb of the Earth. The upper altitude of troposphere aerosol layer was estimated for different latitude zones. The correlation between additional aerosol extinction in the upper troposphere and cyclones was investigated.     

The system Na2CO3–CaCO3–MgCO3 at 6 GPa and 900–1250°C and its relation to the partial melting of carbonated mantle

In order to constrain the Na₂CO₃–CaCO₃–MgCO₃ T–X diagram at 6?GPa in addition to the binary and pseudo-binary systems we conducted experiments along the Na₂CO₃–Ca_0.5Mg_0.5CO₃ join. At 900–1000°C, melting does not occur and isothermal sections are presented by one-, two- and three-phase regions containing Ca-bearing magnesite, aragonite, Na₂CO₃ (Na₂) and Na₂(Ca_1–0.9Mg_0-0.1)_3-4(CO₃)_4-5 (Na₂Ca_3-4), Na₄(Ca_1–0.6Mg_0–0.4)(CO₃)₃ (Na₄Ca), Na₂(Ca_0-0.08Mg_1–0.92)(CO₃)₂ (Na₂Mg) phases with intermediate compositions. The minimum melting point locates between 1000°C and 1100°C. This point would resemble that of three eutectics: Mgs–Na₂Ca₃–Na₂Mg, Na₂Mg–Na₂Ca₃–Na₄Ca or Na₂Mg–Na₄Ca–Na₂, in the compositional interval of [45Na₂CO₃·55(Ca_0.6Mg_0.4)CO₃]–[60Na₂CO₃·40Ca_0.6Mg_0.4CO₃]. The liquidus projection has seven primary solidification phase regions for Mgs, Dol, Arg, Na₂Ca₃, Na₄Ca, Na₂ and Na₂Mg. The results suggest that extraction of Na and Ca from silicate to carbonate components has to decrease minimum melting temperature of carbonated mantle rocks to 1000–1100°C at 6?GPa and yields Na-rich dolomitic melt with a Na# (Na₂O/(Na₂O?+?CaO?+?MgO))?≥?28?mol%.     

Strong electromagnetic field localization near the surface of hemicylindrical particles

We theoretically study the forward and backward plane wave illuminations of hemicylindrical dielectric particles with different radii and refractive indices. Near field effects providing strong field enhancement and narrow beam width are obtained from hemicylindrical particles, which can be associated with whispering gallery modes (WGMs) and photonic nano-jets (PNJs). It should be noted that existence of PNJ and WGM effects depending on forward/backward light illuminations is studied for the first time in all-dielectric hemicylindrical particles. Compared to dielectric cylinders, hemicylindrical aided PNJs show relatively small influences of WGM regime, when exists, to PNJ behavior. Under the backward excitation, on the other hand, typical nano-jet is produced. The designed hemicylindrical structure could be implemented in high-resolution optical imaging and sensing applications.     

Unusual thermodynamic properties and nonergodicity in ferroelectric superlattices

The properties of [Pb(Zr(1-x(1))Ti(x(1)))O(3)](n)/[Pb(Zr(1-x(2))Ti(x(2)))O(3)](n) superlattices, with a 2n period, are simulated using an ab initio based approach. The x(1) and x(2) compositions are chosen to be located across the morphotropic phase boundary of the corresponding disordered alloys, while the (x(1)+x(2))/2 average composition lies inside this boundary. These superlattices exhibit an unusual thermodynamic phase transition sequence, including a triclinic ground state. They also have the kind of peculiar free-energy landscape yielding nonergodicity. The effects responsible for these anomalies are discussed.
