The reactivity of aryl cations toward molecular nitrogen is studied systematically in an ion trap mass spectrometer at 102 Pascal of nitrogen, the pressure of the Titan main haze layer. Nucleophilic addition of dinitrogen occurs and the nature of aryl group has a significant influence on the reactivity, through inductive effects and by changing the ground state spin multiplicity. The products of nitrogen activation, aryldiazonium ions, react with typical nitriles, aromatic amines, and alkynes (compounds that are relevant as possible Titan atmosphere constituents) to form covalently bonded heterocyclic products. Theoretical calculations at the level [DFT(B3LYP)/6-311++G(d,p)] indicate that the N2 addition reaction is exothermic for the singlet aryl cations but endothermic for their triplet spin isomers. The –OH and –NH2 substituted aryl ions are calculated to have triplet ground states, which is consistent with their decreased nitrogen addition reactivity. The energy needed for the generation of the aryl cations from their protonated precursors (ca. 340 kJ/mol starting with protonated aniline) is far less than that required to directly activate the nitrogen triple bond (the lowest energy excited state of N2 lies ca. 600 kJ/mol above the ground state). The formation of aza-aromatics via arene ionization and subsequent reactions provide a conceivable route to the genesis of nitrogen-containing organic molecules in the interstellar medium and Titan haze layers. Despite significant advances in image‐guided therapy, surgeons are still too often left with uncertainty when deciding to remove tissue. This binary decision between removing and leaving tissue during surgery implies that the surgeon should be able to distinguish tumor from healthy tissue. In neurosurgery, current image‐guidance approaches such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) combined with neuronavigation offer a map as to where the tumor should be, but the only definitive method to characterize the tissue at stake is histopathology. Although extremely valuable information is derived from this gold standard approach, it is limited to very few samples during surgery and is not practically used for the delineation of tumor margins. The development and implementation of faster, comprehensive, and complementary approaches for tissue characterization are required to support surgical decision‐making – an incremental and iterative process with tumor removed in multiple and often minute biopsies. The development of atmospheric pressure ionization sources makes it possible to analyze tissue specimens with little to no sample preparation. Here, we highlight the value of desorption electrospray ionization as one of many available approaches for the analysis of surgical tissue. Twelve surgical samples resected from a patient during surgery were analyzed and diagnosed as glioblastoma tumor or necrotic tissue by standard histopathology, and mass spectrometry results were further correlated to histopathology for critical validation of the approach. The use of a robust statistical approach reiterated results from the qualitative detection of potential biomarkers of these tissue types. The correlation of the mass spectrometry and histopathology results to MRI brings significant insight into tumor presentation that could not only serve to guide tumor resection, but that is also worthy of more detailed studies on our understanding of tumor presentation on MRI. Noble metals can be ionized by electrochemical corrosion and transported by electrospray ionization. Mass spectrometry (MS) showed solvated metal ions as the main ionic constituent of the sprayed droplets. Collection of the electrospray plume on a surface yielded noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) under ambient conditions. The NPs were characterized by several techniques. Under typical conditions, capped‐nanoparticle sizes averaged 2.2 nm for gold and 6.5 nm for silver. The gold nanoparticles showed high catalytic activity in the reduction of p‐nitrophenol by NaBH4. Efficient catalysis was also observed by simply directing the spray of solvated Au+ onto the surface of an aqueous p‐nitrophenol/NaBH4 mixture. Organometallic ions were generated by spiking ligands into the spray solvent: for example, CuI bipyridine cations dominated the spray during Cu electrocorrosion in acetonitrile containing bipyridine. Charge exchange reactions within a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer characterize doubly charged ions formed in the ion source. Two methods have been developed for identifying the singly charged ions formed from doubly charged ions by charge exchange in the collision quadrupole. The first is based on the characteristically high kinetic energy-to-charge ratios of the products of charge exchange; this property can be used to separate these ions from all other singly charged ions. This retarding potential method is analogous to procedures for recording doubly charged ion mass spectra using sector instruments. The second method is based on the fact that, although mass remains constant in the charge exchange reaction, the change in mass-to-charge ratio can be followed. A charge exchange linked scan, predicated on changes in charge rather than mass, but otherwise analogous to neutral loss/gain scans, is described. Information on the structure of doubly charged ions can be obtained by recording the fragmentation products of dissociative charge exchange. The utility of the charge exchange linked scan for the selective identification of polynuclear aromatic compounds in a complex mixture is described. We report gas phase ion/molecule reactions between dialkoxyborinium cations (RO-B+-OR) and small organic amides, such as N,N-dimethylformamide and N,N-diethylpropionamide. Besides direct addition at boron, the results show efficient SN2 methyl transfer from the borinium ion to the amide. Isotopic labeling and collision-induced dissociation (CID) of the methyl transfer products demonstrate O-methylation of the amide. Methyl substitution at the alpha-carbon of the amide affects the degree of alkylation and adduct formation. Direct proton abstraction via beta-elimination is a major competitive reaction for substituents other than methyl. Ab initio calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level indicate that SN2 transmethylation is highly exothermic with O-methylation favored over N-methylation by 14.8 kcal/mol. 相似文献
