The dependence of exchange and coulomb energies on wave functions of the interacting systems

First-order energies have been calculated for the He₂ system using a number of He wave functions. The convergence to the Hartree-Fock limit has been studied and a two-term expansion in Slater orbitals gives about 98 per cent of this limit. The effect of correlation has been examined by adding s′² and p ² configurations to the wave function and a change of approximately 10 per cent in the effective first-order energy has been noted.     

Facile one-pot synthesis of 5-substituted hydantoins

5-Substituted and 5,5-disubstituted hydantoins are synthesised from the corresponding aldehydes or ketones, using a one-pot, gallium(III) triflate-catalysed procedure that is compatible with a range of substrates and solvents.     

Nanotube growth during annealing of mechanically milled Boron

Boron powder, finely ground in a tungsten carbide ball mill in an ammonia atmosphere, has been annealed at 1200 °C in flowing nitrogen to produce small quantities of cylindrical BN nanotubes, both as isolated individuals and grouped into ropes. Thick-walled conical BN tubes are abundant in specimens annealed for longer times, and their growth was catalysed once WC debris was converted into W metal particles. Some catalytic effect of small W nanoparticles could be necessary for nanotube formation, though no tip particles have been imaged here. Given the low temperature of mechanical milling and annealing, BN growth must involve surface diffusion and solid-state reconfiguration. It could be possible to engineer desirable physical and chemical properties by exploiting the variation in cylindrical versus conical BN structures as a function of annealing time. The antipode construction for sphere packings

Summary. A construction for sphere packings is introduced that is parallel to the “anticode” construction for codes. This provides a simple way to view Vardy’s recent 20-dimensional sphere packing, and also produces packings in dimensions 22, 44–47 that are denser than any previously known. Finite element approximation of a model for phase separation of a multi-component alloy with a concentration-dependent mobility matrix

We consider a model for phase separation of a multi-componentalloy with a concentration-dependent mobility matrix and logarithmicfree energy. In particular we prove that there exists a uniquesolution for sufficiently smooth initial data. Further, we provean error bound for a fully practical piecewise linear finiteelement approximation in one and two space dimensions. Finallynumerical experiments with three components in one space dimensionare presented.     

Search for new particles decaying to t&tmacr; in p&pmacr; collisions at radicals = 1.8 TeV

We use 106 pb (-1) of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab to search for narrow-width, vector particles decaying to a top and an antitop quark. Model independent upper limits on the cross section for narrow, vector resonances decaying to t&tmacr; are presented. At the 95% confidence level, we exclude the existence of a leptophobic Z' boson in a model of top-color-assisted technicolor with mass M(Z')<480 GeV/c(2) for natural width gamma = 0.012M(Z'), and M(Z')<780 GeV/c(2) for gamma = 0.04M(Z').     

Search for second and third generation leptoquarks including production via technicolor interactions in p&pmacr; collisions at radicals = 1.8 TeV

We report the results of a search for second and third generation leptoquarks using 88 pb(-1) of data recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Color triplet technipions, which play the role of scalar leptoquarks, are investigated due to their potential production in decays of strongly coupled color octet technirhos. Events with a signature of two heavy flavor jets and missing energy may indicate the decay of a second (third) generation leptoquark to a charm (bottom) quark and a neutrino. As the data are found to be consistent with standard model expectations, mass limits are determined.
