Plastic flow and dislocation structure at small strains in OFHC copper deformed in tension,torsion and combined tension-torsion

OFHC copper specimens of 39 μm grain size were deformed to small strains (up to 8%) in tension, torsion and combined tension-torsion at 300 K and the resulting dislocation structures, distributions and densities were determined using transmission electron microscopy. Employing the von Mises yield criterion and the plastic-work hypothesis good agreement was obtained for the three testing conditions for (i) equivalent stress $\text{}\text{?}$gs vs equivalent strain $\text{}\text{?}$g3^p curves, (ii) the dislocation structure, distribution and density ρ as a function of $\text{}\text{?}$g3^p, and (iii) $\text{}\text{?}$gs as a function of $\text{ρ}\text{1}\text{2}$. Furthermore, upon comparing the $\text{}\text{?}$gs vs $\text{ρ}\text{1}\text{2}$ curve for polycrystalline copper with the τ_RSS vs $\text{ρ}\text{1}\text{2}$ curve for single crystals, an average Taylor factor M= (σ/τ_RSS) of approximately 3.2 was obtained, which is in good accord with that predicted theoretically for FCC metals. Almost equally good correlations for the stressstrain curves and for the dislocation density were obtained on the basis of maximum shear stress τ_max and maximum shear strain γ^p_max as on the basis of $\text{}\text{?}$gs and $\text{}\text{?}$g3^P. Therefore, the present results do not permit a positive decision on the question whether the dislocation density correlates better with $\text{}\text{?}$gs and $\text{}\text{?}$g3^P or with τ_max and γ^P_max.A single test in which the direction of straining in torsion was reversed yielded a density and distribution of dislocations (and a corresponding value of $\text{}\text{?}$gs) equivalent to those that developed at a smaller strain in unidirectional straining.     

On Truncated Matricial Stieltjes Type Moment Problems

We study two slightly different versions of truncated generalized matricial moment problems of Stieltjes type. A central topic is the construction and investigation of distinguished solutions of both moment problems under consideration. These solutions turn out to be nonnegative Hermitian Borel measures on the real axis which are concentrated on a finite number of points. Our approach is mainly algebraic. It is based on the use of particular matrix polynomials constructed from a nonnegative Hermitian block Hankel matrix.

Kinetics of the Temperature-Dependent eaq− and ⋅OH Radical Reactions with Cr(III) Ions in Aqueous Solutions

The reactivity of chromium(III) species with the major oxidizing and reducing radiolysis products of water was investigated in aqueous solutions at temperatures up to 150 °C. The reaction between the hydrated electron (e_aq⁻) and Cr(III) species showed a positive temperature dependence over this temperature range. The reaction was also studied in pH 2.5 and 3.5 solutions for the first time. This work also studied the reaction between acidic Cr(III) species and the hydroxyl radical (⋅OH). It was found that Cr³⁺ did not react significantly with the ⋅OH radical, but the first hydrolysis species, Cr(OH)²⁺, did with a rate coefficient of k= (7.2±0.3)×10⁸ M⁻¹ s⁻¹ at 25 °C. The oxidation of Cr(OH)²⁺ by the ⋅OH radical formed an absorbing product species that ultimately oxidized to give Cr(VI). These newly measured reaction rates allow for the development of improved models of aqueous chromium speciation for the effective remediation of liquid high-level nuclear waste via vitrification processes.     

Analysis of Terbumeton and its Major Metabolites by SPE and DAD-HPLC in Soil Bulk Water

A rapid and inexpensive method for simultaneous quantification of terbumeton (TER), and its major potential metabolites (TED; terbumeton-desethyl, TOH; terbumeton-2-hydroxy and TID; terbumeton-deisopropyl) in soil bulk water (SBW) samples is proposed. The analytical method involves extraction–concentration from SBW samples using a graphitized carbon black (GCB) cartridge followed by their separation–detection by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography analysis using a C₁₈ column and a diode array detector. A mobile phase of acetonitrile−0.005 mol L⁻¹ phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) (35:65, v/v) at a flow rate of 0.8 mL min⁻¹ in isocratic elution mode has been used. After optimization of the extraction and separation conditions, this method can be used for the simultaneous determination of investigated compounds in the range of the international limits of 0.1 μg L⁻¹. For TER the detection limit was 0.009 μg L⁻¹ and it was 0.100, 0.550, and 0.480 μg L⁻¹ for TED, TOH, and TID, respectively. The recoveries of TER, TED, TOH, and TID from SBW samples, measured at three levels of concentration range, were found to be between 48.0 and 102.0%. The intra-day precision measured by relative standard deviation (RSD) was always lower than 9.0%.

The [U2F12]2− Anion of Sr[U2F12]

The D_2h‐symmetric dinuclear complex anion [U₂F₁₂]^2? of pastel green Sr[U₂F₁₂] shows a hitherto unknown structural feature: The coordination polyhedra around the U atoms are edge‐linked monocapped trigonal prisms, the U^V atoms are therefore seven‐coordinated. This leads to a U–U distance of 3.8913(6) Å. A weak U^V–U^V interaction is observed for the dinuclear [U₂F₁₂]^2? complex and described by the antiferromagnetic exchange J_exp of circa ?29.9 cm^?1. The crystalline compound can be easily prepared from SrF₂ and β‐UF₅ in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (aHF) at room temperature. It was studied by means of single crystal X‐ray diffraction, IR, Raman and UV/VIS spectroscopy, magnetic measurements, and by molecular as well as by solid‐state quantum chemical calculations.
