We report Monte Carlo simulations of a system of rigid zigzag-shaped molecules that demonstrate that simple excluded-volume interactions are sufficient to produce a fluid tilted lamellar [smectic C (SmC)] liquid crystal phase. The molecules are composed of three rigidly linked hard spherocylinders arranged in a zigzag fashion. By varying the zigzag angle we have mapped out the whole phase diagram as a function of pressure and zigzag angle Psi. For Psi between 35 degrees and 80 degrees our model simulation exhibits the SmC phase. This is the first conclusive evidence where steric interactions arising out of molecular shape alone induce the occurrence of the SmC phase for a wide range of zigzag angles. For smaller Psi, a transition from tilted crystal to crystal is observed. 相似文献

Photosensitive surfaces treated to have in-plane structural anisotropy by illumination with polarized light can be used to orient liquid crystals (LCs). Here we report a detailed study of the dynamic behavior of this process at both short and long times, comparing the ordering induced in the bare active surface with that of the LC in contact with the surface using a high-sensitivity polarimeter that enables detailed characterization of the anisotropy of the active surface. The experiments were carried out using self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) made from dimethylaminoazobenzene covalently bonded to a glass surface through a triethoxysilane terminus. This surface gives planar alignment of the liquid crystal director with an azimuthal orientation that can be controlled by the polarization of actinic light. We find a remarkable long-term collective interaction between the orientationally ordered SAM and the director field of the LC: while an azobenzene based SAM in contact with an isotropic gas or liquid relaxes to an azimuthally isotropic state in the absence of light due to thermal fluctuations, an orientationally written SAM in contact with LC in the absence of light can maintain the LC director twist permanently, that is, the SAM is capable of providing azimuthal anchoring to the LC even in the presence of a torque about the surface normal. We find that the short-time, transient LC reorientation is limited by the weak azimuthal anchoring strength of the SAM and by the LC viscosity. 相似文献

The mechanism for the interaction of thioflavin T (ThT) with amyloid fibrils at the molecular level is not known. Here, we used 1H NMR spectroscopy to determine the binding mode of ThT on the surface of fibrils from lysozyme and insulin. Relayed rotating‐frame Overhauser enhancements in ThT were observed, indicating that the orientation of ThT is orthogonal to the fibril surface. Importantly, the assembly state of ThT on both surfaces is different. On the surface of insulin fibrils, ThT is oligomeric, as indicated by rapid 1H spin‐lattice relaxation rate in the rotating frame (R1ρ), presumably due to intermolecular dipole–dipole interactions between ThT molecules. In contrast, ThT on the surface of lysozyme fibrils is a monomer, as indicated by slower 1H R1ρ. These results shed new light into the mechanism for the enhancement of ThT fluorescence and may lead to more efficient detectors of amyloid assemblies, which have escaped detection by ThT in monomer form. 相似文献

A rapid, sensitive and specific method to quantify pregabalin in human plasma using metaxalone as the internal standard is described. Sample preparation involved simple protein precipitation by using acetronitrile as solvent. The extract was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS–MS). Chromatography was performed isocratically on Thermo Hypurity C18 5 μm analytical column, (50 mm × 4.6 mm i.d.). The assay of pegabalin was linear calibration curve over the range 10.000–10000.000 ng mL?1. The lower limit of quantification was 10.000 ng mL?1 in plasma. The method was successfully applied to the bioequivalence study of pregabalin capsules (150.0 mg) administered as a single oral dose. 相似文献

Charge nonuniformity (sigmazeta) was altered on individual polystyrene latex particles and measured using the novel experimental technique of rotational electrophoresis. It has recently been shown that unaltered sulfated latices often have significant charge nonuniformity (sigmazeta = 100 mV) on individual particles. Here it is shown that anionic polyelectrolytes and surfactants reduce the native charge nonuniformity on negatively charged particles by 80% (sigmazeta = 20 mV), even while leaving the average surface charge density almost unchanged. Reduction of charge uniformity occurs as large domains of nonuniformity are minimized, giving a more random distribution of charge on individual particle surfaces. Targeted reduction of charge nonuniformity opens new opportunities for the dispersion of nanoparticles and the oriented assembly of particles. 相似文献

Small-molecule chaperones that bind to mutant enzyme proteins and correct their misfolding and mistrafficking have emerged
as a potential therapy for Fabry disease. We have synthesized a red fluorogenic substrate, resorufinyl α-d-galactopyranoside, for a new α-galactosidase enzyme assay. This assay can be measured continuously at lower pH values, without
the addition of a stop solution, due to the relatively low pK
a of resorufin (~6). In addition, the assay emits red fluorescence, which can significantly reduce interferences due to compound
fluorescence and dust/lint as compared to blue fluorescence. Therefore, this new red fluorogenic substrate and the resulting
enzyme assay can be used in high-throughput screening to identify small-molecule chaperones for Fabry disease.

This study sets out to examine whether the demand for softwood lumber in the United States is responsive to various market factors including the price of softwood lumber, the price of other building materials, and the level of economic activity (e.g. housing starts). Concern in the analysis is focused on overcoming some of the methodological shortcomings found in previous studies of this issue. The results are conclusive. The quantity of softwood lumber demanded does respond to the various economic factors considered. Moreover, when the structural stability of the estimated relationships is investigated, the results suggest that the demand for softwood lumber regionally in the United States has remained unaltered over the sample period (1950–1985). 相似文献

The syntheses of fourteen unusual o-carboxamido stilbenes by the Heck protocol revealed surprising complexity related to intriguing substituent effects with mechanistic implications. The unexpected cytotoxic and chemopreventive properties also seem to be substituent dependent. For example, although stilbene 15d (with a 4-methoxy substituent) showed cytotoxicity on HT29 colon cancer cells with an IC(50) of 4.9 μM, the 3,4-dimethoxy derivative (15c) is inactive. It is interesting to observe that the 3,5-dimethoxy derivative (15e) showed remarkable chemopreventive activity in WRL-68 fetal hepatocytes, surpassing the gold standard, resveratrol. The resveratrol concentration needed to be 5 times higher than that of 15e to produce comparable elevation of NQO1. 相似文献

Nanotubes can be characterized by a very high point symmetry, comparable or even larger than the one of the most symmetric crystalline systems (cubic, 48 point symmetry operators). For example, N = 2n rototranslation symmetry operators connect the atoms of the (n,0) nanotubes. This symmetry is fully exploited in the CRYSTAL code. As a result, ab initio quantum mechanical large basis set calculations of carbon nanotubes containing more than 150 atoms in the unit cell become very cheap, because the irreducible part of the unit cell reduces to two atoms only. The nanotube symmetry is exploited at three levels in the present implementation. First, for the automatic generation of the nanotube structure (and then of the input file for the SCF calculation) starting from a two‐dimensional structure (in the specific case, graphene). Second, the nanotube symmetry is used for the calculation of the mono‐ and bi‐electronic integrals that enter into the Fock (Kohn‐Sham) matrix definition. Only the irreducible wedge of the Fock matrix is computed, with a saving factor close to N. Finally, the symmetry is exploited for the diagonalization, where each irreducible representation is separately treated. When M atomic orbitals per carbon atom are used, the diagonalization computing time is close to Nt, where t is the time required for the diagonalization of each 2M × 2M matrix.
