Microfabricated ISEs: critical comparison of inherently conducting polymer and hydrogel based inner contacts

A rigorous side by side comparison of miniature planar potassium-selective electrodes with hydrogel and potassium hexacyanoferrate(II)/(III) doped polypyrrole (PPy/FeCN) based inner contacts is presented. The planar electrodes were manufactured by screen printing as four- and five-site arrays on ceramic substrates. These electrode arrays were incorporated into a flow-through cell, which could accommodate nine electrode sites. Two identical flow cells were connected in series and the effect of the inner contacts on the analytical performance of the respective electrodes has been critically evaluated. The time necessary to reach steady state conditions has been determined and the effect of experimental parameters (temperature, ambient light intensity, CO₂, and O₂ concentration of the sample) on the potential stability of the electrodes was analyzed. At controlled temperature, the drift of the planar potassium electrodes with hydrogel and PPy/FeCN solid contact were 0.11±0.02 mV h⁻¹ and 0.03±0.007 mV h⁻¹, respectively. The experimental data proved that there is no aqueous film formation between the PPy/FeCN film and the potassium-selective solvent polymeric membrane.     

Breakdown of echo suppression in the precedence effect

A new phenomenon is reported in which a change in spatial location of the leading sound source disrupts the normal echo suppression of the precedence effect. Click trains were presented through two loudspeakers, one leading the other by a few milliseconds. When leading and lagging signals were switched, listeners heard clicks momentarily for as long as several seconds from both loudspeakers before echo suppression was reestablished.     

Molecular and crystal structure of Cp2Mo(mto), mto=monothiooxalate

Compoundl, Cp₂Mo(mto) is obtained by the reaction of Cp₂MoCl₂ with methanol solutions of potassium dithiooxalate in air. Red platelike crystals of Cp₂Mo(mto) were grown by the slow diffusion of pentane into a CH₂Cl₂ solution ofl and have been studied by X-ray crystallography: space group, P2₁/n,a=7.578(1),b=10.551(2),c=14.090(3) Å, =94.38(2)°,V=1123.1(4) ų,Z=4. The mto ligand chelates to the Mo atom through one oxygen atom and the sulfur atom. The two Cp rings form dihedral angles of 24° with the least-squares plane of the mto ligand. The Mo–O and Mo–S bond distances are 2.193(5) and 2.449(2) Å, respectively.     

Cooperative Lewis Pairs Based on Late Transition Metals: Activation of Small Molecules by Platinum(0) and B(C6F5)3

A Lewis basic platinum(0)–CO complex supported by a diphosphine ligand and B(C₆F₅)₃ act cooperatively, in a manner reminiscent of a frustrated Lewis pair, to activate small molecules such as hydrogen, CO₂, and ethene. This cooperative Lewis pair facilitates the coupling of CO and ethene in a new way.     

ESI-MS assay of M. tuberculosis cell wall antigen 85 enzymes permits substrate profiling and design of a mechanism-based inhibitor

Mycobacterium tuberculosis Antigen 85 enzymes are vital to the integrity of the highly impermeable cell envelope and are potential therapeutic targets. Kinetic analysis using a label-free assay revealed both mechanistic details and a substrate profile that allowed the design and construction of a selective in vitro mechanism-based inhibitor.     

Puroindoline-a, a lipid binding protein from common wheat, spontaneously forms prolate protein micelles in solution

The self-assembly in solution of puroindoline-a (Pin-a), an amphiphilic lipid binding protein from common wheat, was investigated by small angle neutron scattering, dynamic light scattering and size exclusion chromatography. Pin-a was found to form monodisperse prolate ellipsoidal micelles with a major axial radius of 112 ± 4.5 ? and minor axial radius of 40.4 ± 0.18 ?. These protein micelles were formed by the spontaneous self-assembly of 38 Pin-a molecules in solution and were stable over a wide pH range (3.5-11) and at elevated temperatures (20-65 °C). Pin-a micelles could be disrupted upon addition of the non-ionic surfactant dodecyl-β-maltoside, suggesting that the protein self-assembly is driven by hydrophobic forces, consisting of intermolecular interactions between Trp residues located within a well-defined Trp-rich domain of Pin-a.     

Novel route to 5-position vinyl derivatives of thiolactomycin: Olefination vs. deformylation

Vinyl and diene derivatives of thiolactomycin have been prepared via Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons olefination from protected 5-formyl-3,5-dimethylthiotetronic acid. Several 4-position protecting groups and a variety of phosphonates were evaluated, with MOM protection and β-ketophosphonates yielding the highest ratio of the desired product to deformylated product.
