Very compact tunable solid-state laser utilizing a thin-film organic semiconductor

Optically pumped organic semiconductor lasers are fabricated by evaporation of a thin film of tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq(3)) molecularly doped with a laser dye on top of a polyester substrate with an embossed grating structure. We achieve low-threshold, longitudinally monomode distributed-feedback laser operation. By varying the film thickness of the organic semiconductor film, we can tune the wavelength of the surface-emitting laser over 44 nm. The low laser threshold allows the use of a very compact all-solid-state pump laser ( approximately 10 cm long). This concept opens up a way to obtain inexpensive lasers that are tunable over the whole visible range.     

Sums of squares of regular functions on real algebraic varieties

Let be an affine algebraic variety over (or any other real closed field ). We ask when it is true that every positive semidefinite (psd) polynomial function on is a sum of squares (sos). We show that for the answer is always negative if has a real point. Also, if is a smooth non-rational curve all of whose points at infinity are real, the answer is again negative. The same holds if is a smooth surface with only real divisors at infinity. The ``compact' case is harder. We completely settle the case of smooth curves of genus : If such a curve has a complex point at infinity, then every psd function is sos, provided the field is archimedean. If is not archimedean, there are counter-examples of genus .

     

Observation of hot-electron pressure in the vibration dynamics of metal nanoparticles

We investigate the vibration dynamics of ellipsoidal silver nanoparticles, using time-resolved optical pump-probe spectroscopy. When excited with femtosecond laser pulses, the particles execute anisotropic shape oscillations. We show that these vibrations are triggered by the thermal expansion of the optically heated particles. The time dependence of the vibrations indicates that this expansion is caused by two mechanisms: The lattice anharmonicity and the extremely large pressure of the hot conduction electrons.     

Interaction of localized structures in an optical pattern-forming system

We report on the observation and interaction of dissipative localized structures in an optical pattern-forming system. Single localized structures are found to have oscillatory decaying tails originating from diffraction. We observe bound states of two or more constituents. These clusters contain several preferred mutual distances. Numerical simulations show that the corresponding interactions are mediated by the oscillatory tails.     

Non-constant curves of genus 2 with infinite pro-Galois covers

For every odd prime number p, we give examples of non-constant smooth families of curves of genus 2 over fields of characteristic p which have pro-Galois (pro-étale) covers of infinite degree with geometrically connected fibers. The Jacobians of the curves are isomorphic to products of elliptic curves.     

A geometrical measure for entropy changes

The geometrical approach to statistical mechanics is used to discuss changes in entropy upon sequential displacements of the state of the system. An interpretation of the angle between two states in terms of entropy differences is thereby provided. A particular result of note is that any state can be resolved into a state of maximal entropy (both states having the same expectation values for the constraints) and an orthogonal component. A cosine law for the general case is also derived.
