Thermodynamics of complexation of monovalent metal cations by the ionophore monensin free acid in acetonitrile

The standard Gibbs functions, enthalpies, and entropies for the formation of the complexes of monensin acid with monovalent metal cations in acetonitrile were obtained using various methods (conductometry, potentiometry, and calorimetry). Complexation is appreciable (from 2.0 to 4.5 in terms of association constant logarithm) and controlled mainly by the enthalpic effect. Comparison with formation of the corresponding neutral complexes permits a comparison to the process of monensin mediated transport of cation in membranes. A two-step process involving first the formation of the acidic complex is suggested.     

Characterization of Two Light-Harvesting Subunits Isolated from the Brown Alga Pelvetia canaliculata: Heterogeneity of Xanthophyll Distribution

The main light-harvesting fraction from Pelvetia canaliculata was isolated on a sucrose density gradient from digitonin-solubilized chloroplasts. After further solubilization by dodecyl maltoside, the bulk fraction was separated into two subunits by preparative isoelectric focusing. The more acidic brown fraction was mainly composed of 22 kDa polypeptides having an apparent pI of 4.55. Its pigment composition was very simple, containing chlorophyll (Chi) a, Chi c and fucoxanthin. The in vivo spectral properties of fucoxanthin, namely a shift in light absorption to the green and efficient energy transmission to Chi a, were conserved in this subunit. No xanthophyll associated with photoprotection was found in this band, even when obtained from photoinhibited thalli. The less acidic green band contained predominantly 22 kDa polypeptides that were resolved into numerous components by denaturing isoelectric focusing. Its pigment composition was more complex, containing, in addition, pigments of the so-called xanthophyll cycle. In photoinhibited thalli, about half of the violaxanthin was converted into antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin. All the pigments of the xanthophyll cycle were specifically associated with this subunit, and it may thus have a central role in the thermal dissipation of the absorbed light energy as postulated for light-harvesting complex II isolated from green plants.     

Gibbs functions for transfer of divalent metal cations from water to water + methanol mixtures using potentiometry, polarography and solubility measurements

Gibbs functions for transfer from water to methanol and to a full range of water + methanol mixtures were obtained for Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Hg²⁺, Zn²⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Sr²⁺ and Ba²⁺ using potentiometric or polarographic measurements in these solvents. In addition, data were obtained from the solubility products of the alkaline-earth iodates. From values obtained by the different methods and literature data, a table of selected values is given.     

A theoretical approach to the thermochemistry of the polymerization of some derivatives of the monomers CH2X (X = CH2, NH,O)

In this work, we have calculated the thermodynamic parameters of the polymerization of some derivatives of the species CH₂X (X = CH₂, NH, O), using ab initio methods of quantum chemistry and the usual formalism of statistical thermodynamics. It is shown that the Gibbs functions ΔG(l, c) corresponding to CH₂NOCH₃, CNCHNCN, CF₂O and all the percyano derivatives are largely positive which indicates that the spontaneous (radical or ionic) chain polymerization of these monomers is thermodynamically prohibited.     

In Vitro Antiplasmodial and Cytotoxic Activities of Compounds from the Roots of Eriosema montanum Baker f. (Fabaceae)

Malaria remains one of the leading causes of death in sub-Saharan Africa, ranked in the top three infectious diseases in the world. Plants of the Eriosema genus have been reported to be used for the treatment of this disease, but scientific evidence is still missing for some of them. In the present study, the in vitro antiplasmodial activity of the crude extract and compounds from Eriosema montanum Baker f. roots were tested against the 3D7 strain of Plasmodium falciparum and revealed using the SYBR Green, a DNA intercalating compound. The cytotoxicity effect of the compounds on a human cancer cell line (THP-1) was assessed to determine their selectivity index. It was found that the crude extract of the plant displayed a significant antiplasmodial activity with an IC₅₀ (µg/mL) = 17.68 ± 4.030 and a cytotoxic activity with a CC₅₀ (µg/mL) = 101.5 ± 12.6, corresponding to a selective antiplasmodial activity of 5.7. Bioactivity-guided isolation of the major compounds of the roots’ crude extract afforded seven compounds, including genistein, genistin and eucomic acid. Under our experimental conditions, using Artemisinin as a positive control, eucomic acid showed the best inhibitory activity against the P. falciparum 3D7, a well-known chloroquine-sensitive strain. The present results provide a referential basis to support the traditional use of Eriosema species in the treatment of malaria.     

Detection of Frozen–Thawed Duck Fatty Liver by MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry: A Chemometrics Study

The marketing of poultry livers is only authorized as fresh, frozen, or deep-frozen. The higher consumer demand for these products for a short period of time may lead to the marketing of frozen–thawed poultry livers: this constitutes fraud. The aim of this study was to design a method for distinguishing frozen–thawed livers from fresh livers. For this, the spectral fingerprint of liver proteins was acquired using Matrix-Assisted Laser Dissociation Ionization-Time-Of-Flight mass spectrometry. The spectra were analyzed using the chemometrics approach. First, principal component analysis studied the expected variability of commercial conditions before and after freezing–thawing. Then, the discriminant power of spectral fingerprint of liver proteins was assessed using supervised model generation. The combined approach of mass spectrometry and chemometrics successfully described the evolution of protein profile during storage time, before and after freezing-thawing, and successfully discriminated the fresh and frozen–thawed livers. These results are promising in terms of fraud detection, providing an opportunity for implementation of a reference method for agencies to fight fraud.

The first synthesis of “α-methylene-γ-phostones” (propylphostonates) using dimethyl bromo-3-propen-2 ylphosphonate and ketones and aldehydes, in the presence of zinc, is described.

The structure of guoregine, a new isoquinoline alkaloid from $\text{G}$$\text{u}$$\text{a}$$\text{t}$$\text{t}$$\text{e}$$\text{r}$$\text{i}$$\text{a}$$\text{o}$$\text{u}$$\text{r}$$\text{e}$$\text{g}$$\text{o}$$\text{u}$, Annonaceae, has been deduced by spectral analysis and confirmed by an X-ray structure determination. It is the first member of a new class of cularine-related alkaloids (α-$\text{g}$$\text{e}$$\text{m}$-dimetyltetradehydrocularines).
