Phosphorus and arsenic impurities have been introduced into single crystal thin films of gallium nitride by ion implantation. New luminescence bands are observed at 2.85 eV for the phosphorus implant and at 2.58 eV for the arsenic implant. There is some evidence for charge carrier compensation. The multichannel cochlear prosthesis requires an electrode stimulus configuration which produces a stimulus field spatially localized to each electrode. In this paper, a three-dimensional discrete resistance model of the cochlea was developed which exhibits electrical response properties similar to those observed during electrical stimulation of the cochlea. The model results suggest that the spatial attenuation of current within the cochlea varies greatly in magnitude, depending on the stimulus configuration. In addition, the model suggests that the spatial attenuation of current in both the auditory nerve fiber endings in the organ of Corti and in the myelinated fibers within the cochlear ground paths is different from the voltage attenuation in the scalar fluids. Therefore the efficacy with which a particular stimulus configuration differentially excites local terminal auditory nerve fiber populations cannot be deduced from scalar voltage measurements which have previously been recorded in the literature. Consequently physiological experiments were performed in the cat to measure the current distributions in the terminal nerve fiber region for monopolar and bipolar stimulation of the scala tympani, and also for stimulation between the scala tympani and the scala vestibuli. The mean length constants measured in the basal turn for these stimuli were found to be 12, 3, and 7.5 mm, respectively. 相似文献

A superdeformed band has been observed in the N = 108 isotope 190Pb. This is the most neutron-deficient Pb isotope in which superdeformed states have been observed. Several theoretical approaches have predicted that N = 108 will mark the limit of observable superdeformation in the Pb isotopes. The band, which consists of five (possibly six) transitions, is observed to feed at least one isomeric level in its decay to the ground state. The damping of single-particle degrees of freedom in strongly correlated two-dimensional Fermi systems is analyzed. Suppression of the scattering amplitude due to the damping effects is shown to play a key role in preserving the validity of the Landau-Migdal quasiparticle picture in a region of a phase transition associated with the divergence of the quasiparticle effective mass. The masses of the radioactive nuclei (46)V and its decay daughter (46)Ti have been measured with the Canadian Penning Trap on-line Penning trap mass spectrometer to a precision of 1 x 10(-8). A Q(EC) value of 7052.90(40) keV for the superallowed beta decay of (46)V is obtained from the difference of these two masses. With this precise Q value, the Ft value for this decay is determined with improved precision. An investigation of an earlier Q-value measurement for (46)V uncovers a set of 7 measurements that cannot be reconciled with modern data and affects previous evaluations of V(ud) from superallowed Fermi decays. A new evaluation, adding our new data and removing the discredited subset, yields new values for G(V) and V(ud). When combined with recent results for V(us), this yields modified constraints for the unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and other extensions of the standard model. 相似文献

Self-similar propagation of ultrashort, parabolic pulses in a laser resonator is observed theoretically and experimentally. This constitutes a new type of pulse shaping in mode-locked lasers: in contrast to the well-known static (solitonlike) and breathing (dispersion-managed soliton) pulse evolutions, asymptotic solutions to the nonlinear wave equation that governs pulse propagation in most of the laser cavity are observed. Stable self-similar pulses exist with energies much greater than can be tolerated in solitonlike pulse shaping, and this has implications for practical lasers. 相似文献
