Molecular Composition of Sub-stoichiometrically Labeled α-Synuclein Oligomers Determined by Single-Molecule Photobleaching

Bleaching proteins: Single-molecule photobleaching approaches and sub-stoichiometric labeling with fluorophores give insight into the number of monomers that form a specific α-synuclein oligomer. The results show that this α-synuclein oligomer is present as a single, well-defined species consisting of 31 monomers.     

The effect of topical anesthesia on vocal fold motion

The objective of this study was to determine if topical anesthesia to the larynx and pharynx affects vocal fold motion during dynamic voice evaluation with transnasal flexible endoscopy. Transnasal dynamic laryngeal examinations of 10 patients with no voice complaints were evaluated by five blinded fellowship-trained laryngologists. Each patient was examined before and after application of topical anesthetic. Reviewers rated briskness of right and left vocal fold movement and longitudinal tension on a visual analogue scale. Statistical comparisons were made between individual subject scores before and after anesthetic application. Inter-rater reliability was also assessed. No statistical difference was observed between subject scores before and after anesthetic application. Average intraclass correlation coefficients were 0.643 and 0.591 for pre- and postanesthesia scores, respectively. Application of topical anesthesia to the larynx and pharynx does not affect vocal fold motion.     

From Substrate to Coating: Micro- and Surface Analysis Techniques for the Development of Steel Products

For the development of ultra high strength steel and hyperdrawable steel grades precipitates had to be tailored at the nanoscale. Microbeam techniques helped to reach a superior quality of metallic coatings and a superb adhesion to the steel substrate. In this paper the use of micro-analytical techniques in steel product development is illustrated.     

The magnitude and reproducibility of the electroosmotic flow in silica capillary tubes

The influence of a number of factors, such as the nature of the buffer, the presence of additives therein, the manufacturing conditions, and the pretreatment of the capillary, on the magnitude and repeatability of the electroosmotic flow (EOF) in silica capillary tubes has been investigated. It was established that the nature of the buffer plays the most significant role in respect of the stability and magnitude of EOF, whereas the conditions used for manufacture and pretreatment of the tubing are less important. The EOF obtained using buffers consisting of tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane and ethylenediamine was more repeatable than that obtained using pure phosphate buffers. Buffer additives such as sodium dodecylsulfate, 1-butanol, sodium salts of 1-pentanesulfonic acid and 1-heptanesulfonic acid, altered the magnitude of the EOF only, not its repeatability.     

On the location of the zeros of a generalized polynomial

A determinantal formula, based on an appropriate extension of the definition of subresultants, is derived for the location of the number of zeros of a generalized polynomial in the upper half plane.     

A new look at the Padé table and the different methods for computing its elements

In this paper a survey is given of several algorithms for the computation of the Padé table of a formal power series. Those algorithms are studied which are based on certain relationships between adjacent elements in the Padé table. A new proof for the algorithms of Baker, Longman and for Gragg's variant of the qd-algorithm is given. A variant of Watson's algorithm is derived. The techniques used in this survey give some new ideas concerning the structure of the Padé table and the different ways to compute the elements of the table.
