In calculating the modal characteristics of a finitely clad optical waveguide, if the wavelength is much shorter than the core of the waveguide, then the cladding of the waveguide can be assumed to be infinite. On the other hand, if the wavelength is much longer than the core, the core can be ignored. These two approximations, although simple and accurate in the two respective extreme cases, do not provide adequate information in the transition region, where many tapered devices are operated. To overcome this a novel perturbation method is devised, in which these two approximations are combined in such a way that a result that is accurate in all cases can be obtained. Analytical expressions based on this method for describing the dispersion characteristics of finitely clad slab waveguides and circular step-index fibres are derived and compared with other conventional approximations. The combined use of this method and the coupled-mode theory for the analysis of optical couplers is also described. 相似文献

The problem of inclusive radiative pion capture is reanalyzed from a many-body point of view which allows to investigate effects like the Pauli blocking and the polarization of the medium by the spin-isospin interaction in a systematic way. Standard approximations are improved by means of this method, which is however much simpler technically than other available methods and very transparent. Results are presented for a variety of nuclei and the branching ratios for the capture rates are in overall agreement with experiment. The energy distribution of the photons is narrower than experiment and several mechanisms to solve these discrepancies are examined. 相似文献

A convergent numerical method for modeling in situ biorestoration of contaminated groundwater is outlined. This method treats systems of transport-biodegradation equations by operator splitting in time. Transport is approximated by a finite element modified method of characteristics. The biodegradation terms are split from the transport terms and treated as a system of ordinary differential equations. Numerical results for vertical cross-sectional flow are presented. A polyhydrido copper nanocluster, [Cu20H11{Se2P(OiPr)2}9] ( 2H ), which exhibits an intrinsically chiral inorganic core of C3 symmetry, was synthesized from achiral [Cu20H11{S2P(OiPr)2}9] ( 1H ) of C3h symmetry by a ligand‐exchange method. The structure has a distorted cuboctahedral Cu13 core, two triangular faces of which are capped along the C3 axis, one by a Cu6 cupola and the other by a single Cu atom. The Cu20 framework is further stabilized by 9 diselenophosphate and 11 hydride ligands. The number of hydride, phosphorus, and selenium resonances and their splitting patterns in multinuclear NMR spectra of 2H indicate that the chiral Cu20H11 core retains its C3 symmetry in solution. The 11 hydride ligands were located by neutron diffraction experiments and shown to be capping μ3‐H and interstitial μ5‐H ligands (in square‐pyramidal and trigonal‐bipyramidal cavities), as supported by DFT calculations on [Cu20H11(Se2PH2)9] ( 2H′ ) as a simplified model. 相似文献

ZnO is a defect‐governed oxide and emits light at both visible and UV regimes. This work employs atomic layer deposition to produce oxide particles on oxygenated carbon nanotubes, and the composites only show emission profiles at short wavelengths. The quenching of defect‐related emissions at long wavelengths is verified, owing to carboxyl diffusion into oxygen vacancies, and doping is supported by ZnCO3 formation in oxide lattice. Fully coated tubes display an increased photocurrent and the quantum efficiency increases by 22 % relative to the bare nanotubes. 相似文献

Leptin is a peptide hormone, which has a central role in the regulation of body weight; it also exerts many potentially atherogenic effects. Ferulic acid ethyl ester (FAEE) has been approved for antioxidant properties. The aim of this study was to investigate whether FAEE can inhibit the atherogenic effects of leptin and the possible molecular mechanism of its action. Both of cell proliferation and migration were measured when the aortic smooth muscle cell (A10 cell) treated with leptin and/or FAEE. Phosphorylated p44/42MAPK, cell cycle-regulatory protein (for example, cyclin D1, p21, p27), β-catenin and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) proteins levels were also measured. Results demonstrated that leptin (10, 100 ng ml−1) significantly increased the proliferation of cells and the phosphorylation of p44/42MAPK in A10 cells. The proliferative effect of leptin was significantly reduced by the pretreatment of U0126 (0.5 μM), a MEK inhibitor, in A10 cells. Meanwhile, leptin significantly increased the protein expression of cyclin D1, p21, β-catenin and decreased the expression of p27 in A10 cells. In addition, leptin (10 ng ml−1) significantly increased the migration of A10 cells and the expression of MMP-9 protein. Above effects of leptin were significantly reduced by the pretreatment of FAEE (1 and 10 μM) in A10 cells. In conclusion, FAEE exerts multiple effects on leptin-induced cell proliferation and migration, including the inhibition of p44/42MAPK phosphorylation, cell cycle-regulatory proteins and MMP-9, thereby suggesting that FAEE may be a possible therapeutic approach to the inhibition of obese vascular disease. 相似文献

Preparation of proteins from salt‐gland‐rich tissues of mangrove plant is necessary for a systematic study of proteins involved in the plant's unique desalination mechanism. Extraction of high‐quality proteins from the leaves of mangrove tree species, however, is difficult due to the presence of high levels of endogenous phenolic compounds. In our study, preparation of proteins from only a part of the leaf tissues (i.e. salt gland‐rich epidermal layers) was required, rendering extraction even more challenging. By comparing several extraction methods, we developed a reliable procedure for obtaining proteins from salt gland‐rich tissues of the mangrove species Avicennia officinalis. Protein extraction was markedly improved using a phenol‐based extraction method. Greater resolution 1D protein gel profiles could be obtained. More promising proteome profiles could be obtained through 1D‐LC‐MS/MS. The number of proteins detected was twice as much as compared to TUTS extraction method. Focusing on proteins that were solely present in each extraction method, phenol‐based extracts contained nearly ten times more proteins than those in the extracts without using phenol. The approach could thus be applied for downstream high‐throughput proteomic analyses involving LC‐MS/MS or equivalent. A biosensor was fabricated to detect pesticides in food samples. Acetylcholinesterase was immobilized in a novel fenugreek hydrogel–agarose matrix with gold nanoparticles. Transparent thin films with superior mechanical strength and stability were obtained with 2% fenugreek hydrogel and 2% agarose. Immobilization of acetylcholinesterase on the membrane resulted in high enzyme retention efficiency (92%) and a significantly prolonged shelf life of the enzyme (half-life, 55 days). Transmission electron microscopy revealed that, gold nanoparticles (10–20 nm in diameter) were uniformly dispersed in the fenugreek hydrogel–agarose–acetylcholinesterase membrane. This immobilized enzyme-gold nanoparticle dip-strip system detected various carbamates, including carbofuran, oxamyl, methomyl, and carbaryl, with limits of detection of 2, 21, 113, and 236 nM (S/N = 3), respectively. Furthermore, the fabricated biosensor exhibited good testing capabilities when used to detect carbamates added to various fruit and vegetable samples. 相似文献

An air‐ and moisture‐stable nanoscale polyhydrido copper cluster [Cu32(H)20{S2P(OiPr)2}12] ( 1H ) was synthesized and structurally characterized. The molecular structure of 1H exhibits a hexacapped pseudo‐rhombohedral core of 14 Cu atoms sandwiched between two nestlike triangular cupola fragments of (2×9) Cu atoms in an elongated triangular gyrobicupola polyhedron. The discrete Cu32 cluster is stabilized by 12 dithiophosphate ligands and a record number of 20 hydride ligands, which were found by high‐resolution neutron diffraction to exhibit tri‐, tetra‐, and pentacoordinated hydrides in capping and interstitial modes. This result was further supported by a density functional theory investigation on the simplified model [Cu32(H)20(S2PH2)12]. 相似文献
