<Emphasis Type="Italic">Rgcs1</Emphasis>, a dominant QTL that affects retinal ganglion cell death after optic nerve crush in mice

Background  

Intrinsic apoptosis of neuronal somas is one aspect of neurodegenerative diseases that can be influenced by genetic background. Genes that affect this process may act as susceptibility alleles that contribute to the complex genetic nature of these diseases. Retinal ganglion cell death is a defining feature of the chronic and genetically complex neurodegenerative disease glaucoma. Previous studies using an optic nerve crush procedure in inbred mice, showed that ganglion cell resistance to crush was affected by the Mendelian-dominant inheritance of 1–2 predicted loci. To assess this further, we bred and phenotyped a large population of F2 mice derived from a resistant inbred strain (DBA/2J) and a susceptible strain (BALB/cByJ).

Diffractometric methods for absolute measurement of diffraction-grating spacings

We propose one- and two-wavelength methods of absolute measurement of diffraction-grating spacings based on the Littman configuration for autocollimation. The one-wavelength method has been applied to measure the spacing of a grating with a nominal value of 2160grooves/mm . The grating spacing was measured to be 463.16 nm, with an experimental standard deviation of 0.24 nm. It has been demonstrated that the both methods can provide direct traceability in the submicrometer region in terms of wavelength standards for applications in the field of nanometrology.     

Quasi-random tournaments

We introduce a large class of tournament properties, all of which are shared by almost all random tournaments. These properties, which we term “quasi-random,” have the property that tournaments possessing any one of the properties must of necessity possess them all. In contrast to random tournaments, however, it is often very easy to verify that a particular family of tournaments satisfies one of the quasi-random properties, thereby giving explicit tournaments with “random-like” behavior. This paper continues an approach initiated in several earlier papers of the authors where analogous results for graphs (with R.M. Wilson) and hypergraphs are proved.     

Large P4-free graphs with bounded degree

Let ex * (D; H) denote the maximum number of edges in a connected graph with maximum degree D and no induced subgraph isomorphic to H. We prove that this is finite only when H is a disjoint union of paths,m in which case we provide crude upper and lower bounds. When H is the four-vertex path P₄, we prove that the complete bipartite graph K_D,D is the unique extremal graph. Furthermore, if G is a connected P₄-free graph with maximum degree D and clique number ω, then G has at most D² ? D(ω ? 2)/2 edges. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Single crystal growth and the elastic behaviour of In2Bi

Ultrasound velocities have been measured in In₂Bi crystals grown by zone-levelling. The elastic constants are reported. The elastic behaviour is remarkably isotropic: a pure shear and two almost pure waves propagate in all directions other than pure mode directions.
