Secondary Metabolites from Hericium erinaceus and Their Anti-Inflammatory Activities

Hericium erinaceus, a culinary and medicinal mushroom, is widely consumed in Asian countries. Chemical investigation on the fruiting bodies of Hericium erinaceus led to the isolation of one new ergostane-type sterol fatty acid ester, erinarol K (1); and eleven known compounds: 5α,8α -epidioxyergosta-6,22-dien-3β-yl linoleate (2); ethyl linoleate (3); linoleic acid (4); hericene A (5); hericene D (6); hericene E (7); ergosta-4,6,8(14),22-tetraen-3-one (8); hericenone F (9); ergosterol (10); ergosterol peroxide (11); 3β,5α,6α,22E-ergosta-7,22-diene-3,5,6-triol 6-oleate (12). The chemical structures of the compounds were determined by 1D and 2D NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopy, mass spectra, etc. Anti-inflammatory effects of the isolated aromatic compounds (5–7, 9) were evaluated in terms of inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediator (TNF-α, IL-6 and NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated murine RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. The results showed that compounds 5 and 9 exhibited moderate activity against TNF-α (IC₅₀: 78.50 μM and 62.46 μM), IL-6 (IC₅₀: 56.33 μM and 48.50 μM) and NO (IC₅₀: 87.31 μM and 76.16 μM) secretion. These results supply new information about the secondary metabolites of Hericium erinaceus and their anti-inflammatory effects.

Photocatalytic Carboxylation of Phenyl Halides with CO2 by Metal-Organic Frameworks Materials

In this work,important commercial pharmaceutical intermediates,phenylpropionic acid compounds,are successfully obtained by catalyzing the reaction of carbon dioxide with phenyl halides using MOF-5,a typical metal-organic framework(MOF)material.The influence of temperature,pressure,catalyst type and light on the reaction is investigated,and a 90.3%selectivity towards fluorophenylpropionic acid is reached.Significantly,the catalysts are effective for varied benzyl compounds containing different substituent groups.The catalysts are stable and remain active after three cycles.     

Heartwood of Dalbergia cochinchinensis: 4,7,2′-Trihydroxy-4′-methoxyisoflavanol and 6,4′-Dihydroxy-7-methoxyflavane Reduce Cytokine and Chemokine Expression In Vitro

Dalbergia cochinchinensis has been widely used in traditional medicine because of its flavonoids; however, the impact of the flavonoids to modulate the inflammatory response to oral cells remains to be described. For this aim, we isolated 4,7,2′-trihydroxy-4′-methoxyisoflavanol (472T4MIF) and 6,4′-dihydroxy-7-methoxyflavane (64D7MF) from the heartwood of D. cochinchinensis and confirmed the chemical structure by nuclear magnetic resonance. We show here that both flavonoids are inhibitors of an inflammatory response of murine RAW 264.7 inflammatory macrophages stimulated by LPS. This is indicated by interleukin (IL)1, IL6, and chemokine CCL2 production besides the phosphorylation of p65. Consistently, in primary murine macrophages, both flavonoids decreased the inflammatory response by lowering LPS-induced IL1 and IL6 expression. To introduce oral cells, we have used human gingival fibroblasts and provoked the inflammatory response by exposing them to IL1β and TNFα. Under these conditions, 472T4MIF, but not 64D7MF, reduced the expression of chemokines CXCL1 and CXCL2. Taken together, we identified two flavonoids that can reduce the expression of cytokines and chemokines in macrophages and fibroblastic cells.     

Current Understanding toward Isonitrile Group Biosynthesis and Mechanism

Isonitrile group has been identified in many natural products.Due to the broad reactivity of N≡C triple bond,these natural products have valuable pharmaceutical potentials.This review summarizes the current biosynthetic pathways and the corresponding enzymes that are responsible for isonitrile-containing natural product generation.Based on the strategies utilized,two fundamentally distinctive approaches are discussed.In addition,recent progress in elucidating isonitrile group formation mechanisms is also presented.     

Self-Compacting Alkali-Activated Materials: Progress and Perspectives

Alkali-activated materials (AAMs) are considered to be alternative cementitious materials for civil infrastructures. Nowadays, efforts have been made in developing AAMs with self-compacting ability. The obtained self-compacting AAMs (SCAAMs) accomplish superior passing and filling properties as well as excellent mechanical and environmental advantages. This work critically revisits recent progresses in SCAAMs including mixture proportions, fresh properties, mechanical strength, microstructure, acid and sulfate resistance, high temperature behaviors, impact resistance and interface shear strength. To facilitate direct comparison and interpretation of data from different publications, mixture proportions were normalized in terms of the content of key reactive components from precursors and activators, and correlation with mechanical behaviors was made. Moreover, special attention was paid to current research challenges and perspectives to promote further investigation and field application of SCAAMs as advanced construction material.     

Statistical thermodynamics of polydisperse polymer blends with strong interaction

A statistical thermodynamics theory of polydisperse polymer mixtures with strong interaction between dissimilar components based on a lattice fluid model is formulated. Expressions for the free energy, equation of state, phase stability and spinodal for a polydisperse, binary polymer mixture with strong interaction are derived.

Positron Annihilation Study on the Thermal Fatigue in a Die Steel

Samples of 5Cr2NiMoVSi die steel which underwent thermal fatigue with different fatigue cycles have been studied by using microhardness and positron lifetime measurements. It is found that the microhardness and the positron lifetime parameters increase and decrease alternatively with increasing the number of the fatigue cycles. The experimental results reveal that the fatigue strain, the dynamical recovery, and recrystallization and the precipitation are main causes of variation of the defects in the process of thermal fatigue.
