In this Letter, we report on the motion of water droplets on surfaces decorated with molecular gradients comprising semifluorinated (SF) organosilanes. SF molecular gradients deposited on flat silica substrates facilitate faster motion of water droplets relative to the specimens covered with an analogous hydrocarbon gradient. Further increase in the drop speed is achieved by advancing it along porous substrates coated with the SF wettability gradients. The results of our experiments are in quantitative agreement with a simple scaling theory that describes the faster liquid motion in terms of reduced friction at the liquid/substrate interface.  相似文献

A tetraketide synthase containing a loading module (LM), the extension modules erythromycin module 1, rapamycin module 2, and erythromycin module 2 (LM-Ery1-Rap2-Ery2-TE), when expressed in Saccharopolyspora erythraea strain JC2, produced as previously reported a mixture of tetraketide lactones (minor products) and triketide lactones (major products). Several alternative plausible mechanisms by which this "skipping" phenomenon might occur may be proposed. Site-directed mutagenesis of the ketosynthase (KS) and acylcarrier protein (ACP) domains in the interpolated module has shown that skipping within the hybrid PKS involves passage of the growing polyketide through the interpolated module, by direct ACP-to-ACP transfer of the polyketide chain.  相似文献

Bis(1,2,3,4-tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)selane (1) has been prepared by the reaction of tetramethylcyclopentadienyllithium (Cp(t)Li) with selenium bis(diethyldithiocarbamate). Treatment of Cp(t)Li with elemental selenium, followed by air oxidation, led to loss of the allylic hydrogen atom, and formation of the novel tricyclic compound 1,4,5,6,7,10,11,12-octamethyltricyclo[7.3.0.0]-2,8-diselenadodeca-3,5,9,11-tetraene (2). The sulfur analogue of 2 has been obtained by a similar procedure. The X-ray crystal structures of compounds 1 and 2 have been determined, and the molecular geometry observed for has been probed using DFT calculations.  相似文献

Although biological imaging is mostly performed in aqueous media, it is hardly ever considered that water acts as a classic fluorescence quencher for organic fluorophores. By investigating the fluorescence properties of 42 common organic fluorophores recommended for biological labelling, we demonstrate that H2O reduces their fluorescence quantum yield and lifetime by up to threefold and uncover the underlying fluorescence quenching mechanism. We show that the quenching efficiency is significantly larger for red-emitting probes and follows an energy gap law. The fluorescence quenching finds its origin in high-energy vibrations of the solvent (OH groups), as methanol and other linear alcohols are also found to quench the emission, whereas it is restored in deuterated solvents. Our observations are consistent with a mechanism by which the electronic excitation of the fluorophore is resonantly transferred to overtones and combination transitions of high-frequency vibrational stretching modes of the solvent through space and not through hydrogen bonds. Insight into this solvent-assisted quenching mechanism opens the door to the rational design of brighter fluorescent probes by offering a justification for protecting organic fluorophores from the solvent via encapsulation.

Methods are described for the analysis of the anti-coccidial drug, halofuginone, at concentrations of 3 ppm in chicken feed, using gas-liquid chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography. Both methods are based on ethyl acetate extraction, partition into hydrochloric acid and purification and concentration using XAD-2 column chromatography. The hydroxyl radical (*OH) is an important mediator of biological oxidative stress, and this has stimulated interest in its detection. 5,5-Dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) and its alkoxycarbonyl and alkoxyphosphoryl analogues have been employed as spin traps for electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic radical detection. Energies of optimized geometries of nitrones and their corresponding *OH adducts were calculated using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31+G//B3LYP/6-31G level. Calculations predict that the trans adduct formation is favored in alkoxycarbonyl nitrones, while cis adducts with intramolecular H-bonding is favored for alkoxyphosphoryl nitrones. Addition of *OH to a phosphoryl-substituted nitrone is more exoergic than the carbonylated nitrones. Charge and spin densities on the nitrone spin traps were correlated with their rates of addition with *OH, and results show that the charge density on the nitronyl C, the site of *OH addition, is more positive in phosphorylated nitrones compared to DMPO and the alkoxycarbonyl nitrones. The dihedral angle between the beta-H and nitroxyl O bonds is smaller in phosphorylated nitrones, and that aspect appears to account for the longer half-lives of the spin adducts compared to those in DMPO and alkoxycarbonyl nitrones. Structures of nitrones with trifluoromethyl-, trifluoromethylcarbonyl-, methylsulfonyl-, trifluoromethylsulfonyl-, amido-, spiropentyl-, and spiroester substituents were optimized and their energies compared. Amido and spiroester nitrones were predicted to be the most suitable nitrones for spin trapping of *OH due to the similarity of their thermodynamic and electronic properties to those of alkoxyphosphoryl nitrones. Moreover, dimethoxyphosphoryl substitution at C-5 was found to be the most efficient substitution site for spin trapping of *OH, and their spin adducts are predicted to be the most stable of all of the isomeric forms.  相似文献

Photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to examine the consequences of steric inhibition of conjugation in a distorted vinyl sulfide and vinyl ether. Based upon the degree of interaction a deviation from coplanarity of 70°–75° is calculated for 9-oxabicyclo[3.3.1]non-1-ene ( 3 ) and approximately 75°–80° for the sulfur analog 6 .  相似文献

Drop retraction methods are popular means of measuring the interfacial tension between immiscible polymers. Experiments show that two different drop retraction methods, imbedded fiber retraction (IFR) and deformed drop retraction (DDR), give inconsistent results when a surfactant is present on the surface of the drop. These inconsistencies are deemed to be due to dilution of the surfactant and due to gradients in interfacial concentration of surfactant along the drop surface. This physical picture is quantified for the simple case of a Newtonian drop in a Newtonian matrix, with an insoluble, nondiffusive surfactant at the interface. The drop is deformed in computational fluid dynamics simulations by shearing the matrix, and then allowed to retract. Dilution and interfacial tension gradients effects are found to be especially large at the early stages of retraction, making IFR unsuitable for measuring the interfacial tension of surfactant-laden interfaces. The effects of surfactant dilution and gradients are found to persist even at late stages of retraction, causing the DDR method to underestimate the equilibrium interfacial tension significantly. The largest underestimates occur when the drop viscosity is lower than the matrix viscosity.  相似文献

A methodology to synthesize oligonucleotides containing an alkyl interstrand cross-link between the two O6 atoms of deoxyguanosine has been developed. This cross-link is designed to serve as a stable structural mimic of the lesion formed in duplex DNA with the bifunctional alkylating agent hepsulfam. The O6-alkyl coupling is performed via a Mitsunobu reaction between a nucleoside and mono-protected 1,7-heptanediol. Solid-phase oligonucleotide synthesis using a nucleoside bis-phosphoramidite allows for the assembly of the cross-linked duplex. Sufficient quantities of this cross-linked duplex were obtained for various structural and biological investigations.  相似文献

Density functional theory (DFT), CCSD(T), and CBS-QB3 calculations were performed to understand the chemical and reactivity differences between acetylnitrene (CH(3)C(=O)N) and methoxycarbonylnitrene (CH(3)OC(=O)N) and related compounds. CBS-QB3 theory alone correctly predicts that acetylnitrene has a singlet ground state. We agree with previous studies that there is a substantial N-O interaction in singlet acetylnitrene and find a corresponding but weaker interaction in methoxycarbonylnitrene. Methoxycarbonylnitrene has a triplet ground state because the oxygen atom stabilizes the triplet state of the carbonyl nitrene more than the corresponding singlet state. The oxygen atom also stabilizes the transition state of the Curtius rearrangement and accelerates the isomerization of methoxycarbonylnitrene relative to acetylnitrene. Acetyl azide is calculated to decompose by concerted migration of the methyl group along with nitrogen extrusion; the free energy of activation for this concerted process is only 27 kcal/mol, and a free nitrene is not produced upon pyrolysis of acetyl azide. Methoxycarbonyl azide, on the other hand, does have a preference for stepwise Curtius rearrangement via the free nitrene. The bimolecular reactions of acetylnitrene and methoxycarbonylnitrene with propane, ethylene, and methanol were calculated and found to have enthalpic barriers that are near zero and free energy barriers that are controlled by entropy. These predictions were tested by laser flash photolysis studies of benzoyl azide. The absolute bimolecular reaction rate constants of benzoylnitrene were measured with the following substrates: acetonitrile (k = 3.4 x 10(5) M(-1) (s-1)), methanol (6.5 x 10(6) M(-1) s(-1)), water (4.0 x 10(6) M(-1) s(-1)), cyclohexane (1.8 x 10(5) M(-1) s(-1)), and several representative alkenes. The activation energy for the reaction of benzoylnitrene with 1-hexene is -0.06 +/- 0.001 kcal/mol. The activation energy for the decay of benzoylnitrene in pentane is -3.20 +/- 0.02 kcal/mol. The latter results indicate that the rates of reactions of benzoylnitrene are controlled by entropic factors in a manner reminiscent of singlet carbene processes.  相似文献
