Advancing Mathematical Activity: A Practice-Oriented View of Advanced Mathematical Thinking

The purpose of this article is to contribute to the dialogue about the notion of advanced mathematical thinking by offering an alternative characterization for this idea, namely advancing mathematical activity. We use the term advancing (versus advanced) because we emphasize the progression and evolution of students' reasoning in relation to their previous activity. We also use the term activity, rather than thinking. This shift in language reflects our characterization of progression in mathematical thinking as acts of participation in a variety of different socially or culturally situated mathematical practices. For these practices, we emphasize the changing nature of students' mathematical activity and frame the process of progression in terms of multiple layers of horizontal and vertical mathematizing.     

Visions: The coming revolutions in particle physics

We study the branching ratio, CP-violating asymmetry, forward-backward asymmetry and the CP-violating asymmetry in the forward-backward asymmetry for the exclusive decay B → Kτ⁺τ⁻ in the two Higgs doublet model with tree level flavor changing neutral currents (model III). We analyse the dependencies of these quantities on the neutral Higgs boson contributions and the CP parameter sinθ in the model III. We observe that to determine the neutral Higgs boson effects, the measurements of the forward-backward asymmetry and the CP-violating asymmetry in the forward-backward asymmetry for the decay B → Kτ⁺τ⁻ are promising.     

Monotone versions of countable paracompactness

One possible natural monotone version of countable paracompactness, MCP, turns out to have some interesting properties. We investigate various other possible monotone versions of countable paracompactness and how they are related.     

The weak pigeonhole principle for function classes in S 12

It is well known that S ¹₂ cannot prove the injective weak pigeonhole principle for polynomial time functions unless RSA is insecure. Propagation of microcontinuity for nonstandard polynomials

This paper explores the differences between real and complex microcontinuity for hyperreal polynomials, with hypernatural degree and nonstandard coefficients. On the real line, complex microcontinuity differs from real microcontinuity in replacing the coefficients with their absolute values. Apart from this feature, not much analogy is found between (absolute) convergence of series and (absolute) microcontinuity of infinite polynomials, even if these are infinite partial sums of a standard series. Real microcontinuity may be confined to isolated monalds, whereas complex microcontinuity always propagates a noninfinitesimal distance. An infinite partial sum of a power series can be microcontinuous outside the circle of convergence.
