25-Alkoxy-26-benzoyloxycalix[4]arenes: the reaction mechanism of benzoyl migration

In the presence of K₂CO₃ as reaction base, the 25-alkoxy-27-benzoyloxy-calix[4]arenes were converted into 25-alkoxy-26-benzoyloxy derivatives by benzoyl-migration. A benzoyl-migrated reaction mechanism with a cyclic orthobenzoate-like intermediate was proposed, and the mechanism was supported by the identical reaction results on the conversion of 25-ethoxy-27-benzoyloxycalix[4]arene to 25-ethoxy-26-benzoyloxycalix[4]arene, and vice versa.     

Single-turn helix-coil strands stabilized by metal···metal and π-π interactions of the alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridyl moieties in meta-phenylene ethynylene foldamers

Dinuclear alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridyl complexes with oligomeric bridge consisting of five repeating meta-phenylene ethynylene (mPE) units have been found to exhibit a strong tendency to fold back onto themselves to form short helical strands through the stabilization of Pt···Pt and π-π interactions. The steric bulk of the terpyridine ligands and the length of the oligomeric bridge have been found to affect the extent of the intramolecular Pt···Pt interaction that governs the stabilization of the short helical strand in solution. Their folding properties via Pt···Pt and π-π stacking interactions have been studied by (1)H NMR, 2D ROESY NMR, electronic absorption, and emission spectroscopies.     

Head-to-tail dimerization and organogelating properties of click peptidomimetics

Click triazole-based oligopeptides 1-3 were found to self-dimerize (K(dim) ≈ 10-680 M(-1)) in a head-to-tail fashion based on (1)H variable concentration, 2D, and H/D exchange NMR, VPO, CD, FT-IR studies and Gaussian 03 simulations. The dimerization constant K(dim) was shown to increase with increasing number of the amino acid units. Within the same oligomeric series, the K(dim) value is strongly affected by the size of the C-terminal end group. The tripeptides 2 are also excellent organogelators of aromatic solvents.     

Solution processed high performance pentacene thin-film transistors

High performance thin-film transistors were fabricated using a new precursor of pentacene through a multiple spin-heat procedure. High quality pentacene thin films can be prepared by this method and hence a FET device can be made in a top-contact configuration. The device exhibited a remarkable field-effect mobility of 0.38 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) with an on/off ratio of 10(6).     

When electron exchange is chemical exchange-assignment of 1H NMR spectra of paramagnetic cobalt(II)-2,2':6'2''-terpyridine complexes

Electron exchange between [Co(terpy)2]3+ and [Co(terpy)2]2+ can be monitored by 1H NMR exchange spectroscopy and allows the cobalt(II) spectra to be fully assigned.     

From Nongelating to Gelating: Synthesis and Structural Self‐Assembling Property Relationships of a Homologous Series of Oligo(amide–triazole)s

A homologous series of oligo(amide–triazole)s (OAT) [ OAT‐CO₂H‐2 n and OAT‐COPrg‐(2 n +1) ] with an increasing number of primary amide (CONH) and triazole hydrogen‐bonding functionalities was prepared by an iterative synthetic procedure. It was found that their self‐assembly and thermoreversible gelation strength had a strong correlation to the number of hydrogen‐bonding moieties in the oligomers. There also existed a threshold value of the number of CONH units, above which all the oligomers became organogelators. Hence, oligomers with ≤4 CONH units are devoid of intermolecular hydrogen bonding and also non‐organogelating, whereas those that contain >4 CONH units show intermolecular association and organogelating properties. For the organogelators, the T_gel value increases monotonically with increasing number of CONH units. On the basis of FTIR measurements, both the CONH and triazole C? H groups were involved in the hydrogen‐bonding process. A mixed xerogel that consisted of a 1:1 weight ratio of two oligomers of different lengths ( OAT‐CO₂H‐6 and OAT‐CO₂H‐12 ) was found to show microphase segregation according to differential scanning calorimetry, thus indicating that oligomers that bear a different number of hydrogen‐bonding units exhibited self‐sorting to maximize the extent of intermolecular hydrogen bonding in the xerogel state.     

Synthesis of helix 69 of Escherichia coli 23S rRNA containing its natural modified nucleosides,m(3)Psi and Psi

The synthesis of 3-methylpseudouridine (m(3)Psi) phosphoramidite, 5'-O-[benzhydryloxybis(trimethylsilyloxy)silyl]-2'-O-[bis(2-acetoxyethoxy)methyl]-3-methylpseudouridine-3'-(methyl-N,N-diisopropyl)phosphoramidite, is reported. Selective pivaloyloxymethyl protection of the Psi N1 followed by methylation at N3 was used to generate the naturally occurring pseudouridine analogue. The m(3)Psi phosphoramidite was used in combination with pseudouridine (Psi) and standard base phosphoramidites to synthesize a 19-nucleotide RNA representing helix 69 of Escherichia coli 23S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) (residues 1906-1924), containing a single m(3)Psi at position 1915 and two Psi's at positions 1911 and 1917. Our synthesis of the fully modified helix 69 RNA demonstrates the ability to make milligram quantities of RNA that can be used for further high-resolution structure studies. Site-selective introduction of the methyl group at the N3 position of pseudouridine at position 1915 causes a slight increase in the thermodynamic stability of the RNA hairpin relative to pseudouridine; RNAs containing either uridine or 3-methyluridine at position 1915 have similar stability. One-dimensional imino proton NMR and circular dichroism spectra of the modified RNAs reveal that the methyl group does not cause any substantial changes in the RNA hairpin structure.     

Synthesis of 15N-enriched pseudouridine derivatives

[reaction: see text]. A procedure for the chemical synthesis of [3-15N]-labeled pseudouridine and a methylated derivative was developed. A suitably protected pseudouridine precursor was nitrated at N3 followed by treatment with 15NH4Cl to afford the 15N-labeled product in six steps with a 20% yield. This methodology will allow for the production of RNAs with [3-15N]pseudouridine and [3-15N-methyl]pseudouridine at specific locations.     

Novel Sesquiterpenes from the Fungus Lactarius piperatus

Four novel sesquiterpenes, namely 7α,8β,13‐trihydroxy‐5,13‐marasmanolide ( 2 ), isoplorantinone ( 5 ), 4,8,14‐trihydroxyilludala‐2,6,8‐triene ( 6 ), and 8‐hydroxy‐8,9‐secolactara‐1,6‐dien‐5,13‐olide ( 10 ), together with six known ones, 7α,8β‐dihydroxy‐5,13‐marasmanolide ( 1) , 7α,8α‐dihydroxy‐5,13‐marasmanolide ( 3 ), isolactarorufin ( 4 ), blennin A ( 7 ), blennin D ( 8 ), and lactarorufin ( 9 ), were isolated from the ethanolic extract of Lactarius piperatus. The structures of these sesquiterpenes, representing diversified structural types, were determined mainly by spectroscopic methods, especially 2D‐NMR techniques. The structure of 6 was further confirmed by a single‐crystal X‐ray‐diffraction determination.     

Extraction of aromatic organic compounds by polyurethane foam

The mechanism of extraction of organic compounds by open-cell polyurethane foam has been investigated through a detailed study with simple aromatic compounds. Comparison with identical extractions into diethyl ether suggests that the basic extraction mechanism is an ether-like solvent extraction process. The addition of salt increases the extraction and changing the dielectric constant of the aqueous solution also affects the extraction. For organic compounds which have a group capable of hydrogen bonding, some additional factor appears to influence the extraction. This appears to be hydrogen bonding with the polyurethane foam; it is stronger with polyether foam and reduced by the presence of a strong intramolecular hydrogen-bonding group placed ortho to the hydrogen-bonding group. Thermodynamic studies support these conclusions.
