Electrical properties of some crystalline salts of adenine

In the present paper we report the first experimental results on ac and dc conductivity and permittivity of adenine hemisulphate hydrate and adenine sulphate measured at atmospheric and high hydrostatic pressures. For both materials ac conductivity is of ^s type, where:s 1·1· Room temperature dc conductivity of adenine hemisulphate hydrate equals approximately 5×10^{–15 –1} cm^–1 with an activation energy of 0·86 eV; dc conductivity of adenine sulphate is less than 10^–16 cm^–1. On the basis of these measurements and those carried out at high pressure, it is concluded that conductivity of adenine hemisulphate hydrate is of electronic type.The authors wish to thank Dr. J. The d-resonance scattering in amorphous Fe x Pd80−x Si20 alloy

The electrical resistivity of amorphous Fe _x Pd_80–x Si₂₀ alloy has been discussed in terms of extended Ziman theory. The increase in the electrical resistivity of Fe _x Pd_80–x Si₂₀ has been predicted due to the d-resonance scattering of the conduction electrons by Fe-atoms.Dedicated to Academician Vladimír Hajko on the occasion of his 65th birthday.     

Density of states for intermediate valence and Kondo systems

We calculate the density of states for the nondegenerate Anderson model for various values ofu=U/ andn _f using the perturbation theory withu as the expansion parameter. Summing all the -independent self-energy diagrams, we use the Friedel sum rule and Ward identities to express the physical quantities in terms of the remaining -dependent part of the self-energy, which we evaluate to the 2nd order. The results for the spin and charge susceptibilities obtained in such a way compare rather well with the Bethe-ansatz results. The density of states exhibits different features in different parts of the parameter space. In Kondo region (u>1,n _f 1, i.e., – _f ~U/2), we obtain a many-body resonance (half-width T _K ) around the Fermi level and two broad peaks () at about _f +n _f U and _f +U. In the VF region (u>1, and | _f |) we obtain only two peaks (), one at about _f and one between _f +n _f U and _f +U. The consequences regarding the shape of the photoemission and inverse photoemission spectra of Ce intermetallics are discussed.     

Influence of operational parameters on retention of ultra-high molecular weight polystyrenes in thermal field-flow fractionation

Summary The influence of various parameters (concentration of the injected polymer solution, flow rate, temperature gradient, relaxation conditions) on the retention and shape of the fractogram of ultra-high molecular weight polystyrenes in thermal field-flow fractionation was investigated. Under the operating conditions adopted, reproducible oscillations in the peak shape are observed for molecular weights larger than a few millions, especially at relatively high polymer concentration. They are attributed to some hydrodynamic instabilities. The retention of ultra-high molecular weight polystyrenes at high flow rate is strongly dependent on the initial relaxation period. All of the investigated operational variables have a complex effect on the resulting shape of the fractogram. Consequently, the confirmation of the shear-induced focusing of macromolecules across the channel thickness requires further study. Experiments on reinjection of fractions collected after an initial high speed pass through the separation system leads to the conclusion that shear degradation of the ultra-high molecular weight polymers did not occur under the investigated experimental conditions even at the highest flow rates.     

Stereospecific total synthesis of (±)-strempeliopine

The 18-methylene-1,2-dehydroaspidospermidine (III) was stereospecifically transformed into the schizozygane alkaloid strempeliopine (II) in 16,6 % overall yield.     

Contamination level of Danube river sediments

The paper presents a survey of the contamination level of the Danube river sediments along its course, between 849 km and 1162 km, during the period 1985–1988. Sampling was performed on several locations in the seasons with extreme hydrological conditions (spring, autumn).     

Interaction of long chain alkylammonium cations with reduced charge montmorillonite

Reduced charge montmorillonites (RCM) were prepared using lithium thermal treatment. The sorption of octylammonium (OA), dodecylammonium (DDA) and hexadecylammonium ions (HDA) on differently charged samples were studied. The amounts of DDA and HDA sorbed on each RCM exceed the cation exchange capacity (CEC) but that of OA exceeds only the CEC of samples with the lowest CEC. The sorption is affected not only by the layer charge but also by the formation of collapsed interlayer spaces in the lowest charged montmorillonites. X-ray measurements confirmed the decrease of the layer charge after lithium thermal treatment and the layer charge heterogeneity in RCMs.

In Situ Amperometric Detection of Vesicles and Microgel Phases in an Aggregating System: Calcium Alginate

In situ amperometric characterization of an aggregating system in terms of molecular adsorption and single microparticle interactions at the electrode interface is demonstrated using a model system: alginate/Ca(II) in an aqueous electrolyte solution. Recording of chronoamperometric curves of oxygen reduction at the dropping mercury electrode is designed for detection of dip‐shaped signals of individual gel microparticles. By addition of Ca(II) decrease of alginate adsorption is accompanied by appearance of signals indicating vesicle type association of alginate molecules and microparticles of gel phase. AFM imaging provided evidence of initial stage in calcium alginate gel formation.
