Meso-tetraaryl cofacial bisporphyrins delivered by Suzuki cross-coupling

The Suzuki cross-coupling methodology provides a facile synthetic approach for the modular preparation of meso-tetraaryl cofacial bisporphyrins anchored by xanthene and dibenzofuran. This synthetic method furnishes cofacial bisporphyrin templates with enhanced steric and electronic protection from mu-oxo formation and oxidative degradation. The ability of these platforms to support multielectron oxidation chemistry mediated by proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is demonstrated by their reactivity for the catalytic disproportionation of hydrogen peroxide to oxygen and water.     

Taxumairols X--Z,new taxoids from Taiwanese Taxus mairei

In addition to 19-dydroxybaccatin III, 1beta-hydroxy-5 alpha-deacetylbaccatin I, taxayuntin G and 13-O-deacetyltaxumairol Z (4), three new taxane diterpenoids, taxumairols X (1), Y (2), Z (3) have been isolated from extracts of the Formosan Taxus mairei (LEMEE & LEVL.) S. Y. HU. Compounds 1-2 belong to the 11(15-->1)-abeo-taxane system, having a tetrahydrofuran ring at C-2, C-3, C-4 and C-20. The new compound 3 and 4, which was misidentified previously are derivatives of 11(15-->1)-abeo-taxane with an intact oxirane system. The structures of compounds 1-4 were elucidated on the basis of extensive two dimensional (2D)-NMR analysis.     

Formal synthesis of (±)-udoteatrial hydrate

The formal synthesis of antimicrobial diterpene udoteatrial hydrate (1) is described in nine steps. Diol 6 used as starting material. The key intermediate 4 was obtained from bicyclic ketone 5 via the key Norrish type I reaction.     

Conformational Studies on Polytripeptides as a Model of Collagen

To study the role of glycine residues in stabilizing the collagen triple helix, the glycine residues in the polytripeptide (Pro-Ala-Gly)_n were partially replaced by alanine. The proline content was kept constant. The stability of the helical conformation of these polypeptides was studied by IR- and X-ray measurements in the solid state and by ORD, CD and viscometry in solution. The renaturation was followed as a function of time. All the polytripeptides studied, with the exception of (-Pro-Ala-Ala-)_n attained the polyproline II conformation. However the stability decreased with increasing alanine content. Obviously the molecules of (-Pro-Ala-Gly-) are highly associated by intermolecular hydrogen bonds and one may therefore suppose that a triple-stranded helix aggregation occurs. The results of the refolding process show that the stability of the helices seems to also affect the refolding rate in terms of the optical rotation, Two transitions appeared: the first one is responsible for a rapid reversible change in conformation and the second one for a further slow and irreversible change in the hydrodynamic shape. The latter seems to be due to the partial helical nature, leading to higher chain mobility.     

Oscillator Strength Calculations with the Compromised Orbitals

The oscillator strength has been calculated from a common set of compromised orbitals, instead of sets of the two separately optimized non-orthogonal orbitals for the two states involved in the transition. Inaccuracies of two types arose from the calculations were assessed by investigating simple atomic and molecular systems.     

A preliminary study on the initial elastic adhesion behavior of leucocytes

By treating the cell body as an elastic colloid and applied with the Hertz contact theory of linear elasticity and the lubrication equation of fluid dynamics, the elastic adhesion behavior of leucocytes in close motion toward a plane surface is investigated. The effect of the Stokes number on the deformation profile of the cell is considered during the adhesion period. From the results of numerical simulation, it is found that under certain conditions (i.e. regardless of the magnitude of F for the cases of ST=1 and 3 and ε0.0055 for ST=10), after exhausting all of the incoming kinetic energy, the cell can rest at an equilibrium separation which is close to the ligand–receptor bond length formed between two interacting surfaces.     

Preparation and application of cryptand-coated piezoelectric crystal gas-chromatographic detector

A re-usable and sensitive cryptand-22-coated quartz-crystal membrane piezoelectric sensor with a homemade computer interface for signal acquisition and data processing was prepared and applied as a gas-chromatographic (GC) detector for various organic molecules. The oscillating frequency of the quartz crystal decreased due to the adsorption of organic molecules on cryptand-22. Effects of functional group, molar mass, steric hindrance and polarity of organic molecules on frequency responses of the cryptand-coated piezoelectric crystal detector were investigated. The cryptand-coated piezoelectric crystal GC detector had demonstrated high sensitivity for various polar organic molecules and good reproducibility when re-used. The frequency responses of the cryptand-coated crystal for various molecules were in the following order: carboxylic acids (RCOOH)primary amines (R-NH₂)>alcohols (ROH)>secondary amines (R₂NH)>tertiary amines (R₃N)>ketones. More polar molecules exhibited better frequency responses. The effect of temperature and amount of coating on the frequency responses of cryptand-coated crystal GC detector were also investigated. The cryptand-coated piezoelectric crystal GC detector compared well with the commercial thermal conductivity detector (TCD).     

Relationship between microhardness and fluorine contents on tooth enamel determined by PIGE analysis

The remineralization effect of fluoride has been measured by surface microhardness on tooth enamel. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between microhardness and fluorine concentration on tooth enamel. Twelve sound bovine enamel specimens were prepared and immersed in 0.05% NaF solution for 1, 3, 6, 24 and 36 hours, respectively. The concentration of fluorine in specimens were measured by PIGE analysis and surface microhardness of each specimen was measured by surface microhardness tester. Fluorine concentration was increased by immersing time. There was no change in microhardness of each specimen by fluorine content. The results of this study suggest that there was no relationship between the fluorine concentration and surface microhardness in sound tooth enamel. PIGE analysis can be used effectively to assess the remineralization effect of fluorine content in tooth enamel.     

Application of Iodide Ion Selective Electrode to the Study of Stepwise Formation Constant and Solubility Product of Lead Iodide

Iodide ion-selective electrode were studied, prepared and applied for the complex formations and solubility product determination. The thermodynamic formation constant of PbI⁺ and the solubility product of PbI₃ were found to be 54 and 9.2 × 10^?9, respectively. The formation constant of PbNO₃⁺ was calculated to be 4.6 from the different formation constant of PbI⁺ in perchlorate and nitrate media.     

Concentration and determination of trace organic pollutants in water

Organic pollutants in water are isolated on a mini-sampler tube containing a macroporous resin. The sorbed pollutants are next thermally transferred to a second sorption tube and then to an analytical column where they are separated and determined by temperature-programmed gas chromatography. Excellent recoveries were obtained for tests in which model organic compounds of various classes were added to water. The water sample is much smaller than that required with previous analytical methods.
