Semileptonic (Λ b → Λcev) decay in a field theoretic quark model

The semileptonic decay width of heavy baryons such as (Λ _b → Λcev) has been estimated in the framework of a nonrelativistic field theoretic quark model where four component quark field operators along with a harmonic oscillator wave function are used to describe translationally invariant hadronic states. The present estimation does not make an explicit use of heavy quark symmetry and has a reasonable agreement with the experimentally measured decay width, polarisation ratio and form factors with the harmonic oscillator radii and quark momentum distribution inside the hadron as free parameters.     

Raman and resonance-Raman spectra of CsI/I−3

Raman and resonance-Raman spectra of the I^?₃ ion isolated within CsI crystals have been studied using 647 nm and 488 nm exciting radiation. Sample temperatures between 300 and 20 K have been used. Eleven overtones of the symmetric stretching mode (nν₁) have been observed in the resonance-Raman spectrum excited by the 488 nm Ar⁺ laser line. Bands centred at 153, 170, 264 and 304 cm^?1 have been assigned as ν₃, 2ν₂, ν₁+ν₃ and 2ν₃(Σ⁺) respectively. The remaining structure between the nν₁ lines has been assigned as due to combinations of these lines with the lattice vibrations of the CsI crystal.     

Spectral Properties of the Cauchy Operator and Its Product with Bergman's Projection on a Bounded Domain

In this paper exact asymptotic formulae are found for singularvalues of the Cauchy operator and the logarithmic potentialtype operator (on a bounded domain), as well as their productswith Bergman's projection. It is shown that these spectral characteristicsdetect geometric properties of a domain (area and the lengthof the boundary). The hypothesis "can we hear the shape of adrum", from a paper by J.M. Anderson, D. Khavinson, and V. Lomonosov[‘Spectral properties of some integral operators arisingin potential theory’, Quart. J. Math. Far downstream analysis for the Blasius boundary-layer stability problem

In this paper, we examine the large Reynolds number (Re) asymptoticstructure of the wave number in the Orr–Sommerfeld regionfor the Blasius boundary layer on a semi-infinite flat plategiven by Goldstein (1983, J. Fluid Mech., 127, 59–81).We show that the inclusion of the term which contains the leading-ordernon-parallel effects, at O(Re^{– 1/2}), leads to a non-uniformexpansion. By considering the far downstream form of each termin the asymptotic expansion, we derive a length scale at whichthe non-uniformity appears, and compare this position with theposition seen in plots of the wave number.     

Optical detection of spin polarization in single-molecule magnets [Mn(12)O(12)(O(2)CR)(16)(H(2)O)(4)

A magneto-optical study has been undertaken of the mixed-valence single-molecule magnet [Mn(IV)(4)Mn(III)(8)O(12)L(16)] in which the ligands, L, are acetate (Mn(12)Ac) or the long-chain carboxylic acid, C(14)H(29)COOH (Mn(12)C(15)), that confers better solubility in organic solvents. Thin polymer films of these compounds in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMM) have been cast by solvent evaporation to provide samples suitable for variable-temperature and field magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) studies. The absorption spectra in isotropic light are featureless, whereas the low-temperature MCD spectra contain resolved peaks, both positive and negative. MCD magnetization curves measured at temperatures above 4.2 K have established a ground-state spin of S = 10 and an axial zero-field parameter, D, of -0.61 K, similar to that determined for single crystals of Mn(12)Ac. By studying at a variety of optical wavelengths, the polarization ratios of the optical transitions relative to the unique axis of the zero-field distortion have been determined. The MCD magnetization curves measured at 4.2 K between 0 and 5 T for the case of Mn(12)C(15) in the PMM film can be fitted only on the assumption of nonrandom distribution of molecular z-axes arising from stresses in the polymer film during the process of casting. MCD-detected hysteresis curves measured in both frozen solution and PMM films, below the blocking temperature of approximately 3 K, show a high retention of spin polarization after reduction to zero of a polarizing magnetic field. This generates intense zero-field circular dichroism (CD) with maximum intensity for xy-polarized optical transitions whose sign depends on the direction of the original polarizing field. The optical polarization and the selection rules for MCD select a subset of molecular orientations with respect to the direction of field. Thus, the magnetically induced CD provides a highly sensitive and rapid optical method of reading the spin polarization of molecular magnets.     

Wrap-around partitioning for block bidiagonal linear systems

A stable vector algorithm for the solution of block diagonallinear systems is obtained by a permutation of the unknownscalled wrap-around partitioning combined with standard QR factorization.Wrap-around partitioning uses blocking and selects the unknownsin the blocks in turns. After a suitable orthogonal eliminationstep one ends up with a reduced system which is again blockbidiagonal and so wrap-around partitioning can be applied again.Using a simple model for vectorization overhead it is shownthat small block sizes give best performance. The minimal blocksize 2, which corresponds to cyclic reduction, is suboptimaldue to memory bank conflicts.     

Absolute Intensities of the 10-µm Bands of (16)O(3)

Two hundred ninety experimental absolute intensities of nu(1) and nu(3) transitions of ozone have been measured, with good accuracy (<2%). They are used to derive the transition-moment parameters for these bands. The agreement between our observed and calculated line intensities is satisfactory. This work shows that the intensities of these two bands are on average 4% smaller than those used in the literature. In addition, 20 intensities of the nu(2) + nu(3) - nu(2) band confirm this value. Also, 42 line intensities of the 2nu(1)-nu(3) band are reported. Copyright 2001 Academic Press.     

Probing a complex of cytochrome c and cardiolipin by magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy: implications for the initial events in apoptosis

Oxidation of cardiolipin (CL) by its complex with cytochrome c (cyt c) plays a crucial role in triggering apoptosis. Through a combination of magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy and potentiometric titrations, we show that both the ferric and ferrous forms of the heme group of a CL:cyt c complex exist as multiple conformers at a physiologically relevant pH of 7.4. For the ferric state, these conformers are His/Lys- and His/OH(-)-ligated. The ferrous state is predominantly high-spin and, most likely, His/-. Interconversion of the ferric and ferrous conformers is described by a single midpoint potential of -80 ± 9 mV vs SHE. These results suggest that CL oxidation in mitochondria could occur by the reaction of molecular oxygen with the ferrous CL:cyt c complex in addition to the well-described reaction of peroxides with the ferric form.
